Canada-GCC trade reaches $8.5bln in 2023
MUSCAT: Trade between the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Canada amounted to $8.5 billion in 2023, according to recent data published by the GCC Statistical Center. This figure represents 14.1 per cent decline in trade in 2023 in comparison with 2022's total of $9.9 billion. Most notably, GCC exports to Canada decreased by 32.2 per cent ($1.5 billion) to $3.2 billion in 2023, versus $4.7 billion in the previous year. Minerals fuels, oils and waxes, totaling $2.1 billion in value, represented a 65.6 per cent share of exports. This was followed by miscellaneous items (12.5 per cent of exports) valued at $0.4 billion. Iron and steel represented 9.4 per cent of total exports amounting to $0.3 billion, followed by precious stones and metals which represented 6.3 per cent of total exports valued at $0.2 billion. Machinery and mechanical appliances and iron and/or steel products accounted for 3.1 per cent of exports with a value of $0.1 billion. On the other hand, imports from Canada increased by 0.8 per cent ($0.1 billion) in 2023 to $5.3 billion. Miscellaneous items worth $2.0 billion made up 37.7 per cent of total imports, while 'commodities subject to special provisions' accounted for a 18.9 per cent share worth $1.0 billion. Imports of precious stones and metals, machinery and mechanical appliances, vehicles and vehicle parts collectively accounted for a 13.2 per cent share of exports, valued at $0.7 billion. Edible vegetable oils accounted for a 3.8 per cent share of imports with a value $0.2 billion. Despite the decline in the trade volume, Canada moves up a rank to become the 32nd trade partner of the GCC in 2023. US-GCC trade reaches $93.6bln in 2023
MUSCAT: Trade between the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the United States of America amounted to $93.6 billion in 2023, according to recent data published by the GCC Statistical Center. This figure represents a slight decrease of $1.16% ($1.1 billion), in comparison to 2022's total of $94.7 billion. GCC exports to the US decreased by 19.8% ($8.9 billion) to $36.1 billion in 2023, versus $45.0 billion in the previous year. Petroleum and hydrocarbon products, totaling $16.2 billion in value, represented a 44.9% share. This was followed by miscellaneous items (26.6% of exports) valued at $9.6 billion. Gold and precious stones represented 9.1% of total exports amounting to $3.3 billion, followed by aluminium and aluminium products which represented 8.6% of total exports valued at $3.1 billion. On the other hand, imports from the US increased by 15.7% ($7.8 billion) in 2023 to $57.7 billion. Miscellaneous items worth $20.7 billion made up 36% of total imports, while machinery and mechanical appliances accounted for a 28% share worth $16.1 billion. Vehicles and vehicle parts represented 17% of imports, valued at $9.8 billion, while aircraft, spacecraft, and parts accounted for a 7% share, valued at $4 billion. This was followed by electrical machinery and equipment (6.3%) valued at $3.6 billion, and instruments and precision goods (5.7%) valued at $3.3 billion. The United States was ranked the GCC's 4th largest trading partner in 2023, while China was ranked first with trade total of $286.9 billion, followed by India at $154.7 billion. GCC countries surpass global health targets: Gulf-Stat
MUSCAT, May 12: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have exceeded several global health targets, according to a recent report by the GCC Statistical Center (GCC-Stat). The center highlighted significant strides in maternal and child health, infectious disease control, and environmental health. The report indicates that the GCC nations have surpassed the global target for maternal mortality, which aims to limit deaths to no more than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. In 2022, the highest recorded maternal mortality rate in the region was 17.1 per 100,000 live births. Additionally, the percentage of births attended by skilled health personnel in all GCC countries exceeded 98% in 2022. Regarding child health, the under-five mortality rate in the GCC countries reached approximately 10.2 deaths per 1,000 live births, significantly lower than the global target of under 25 deaths per 1,000 live births by 2030. All GCC countries have also achieved the target of reducing neonatal mortality to 12 deaths per 1,000 live births. In the realm of infectious diseases, the report notes that HIV infection rates remain low among both males and females in the GCC countries, with the overall number of recorded infections staying below the global average of 0.17 per 1,000 uninfected population. The report also addresses environmental health, stating that death rates from road traffic accidents in the GCC countries ranged between 3 and 14.1 deaths per 100,000 population in 2022, all below the global average of 15 deaths per 100,000. Similarly, death rates from air pollution in the region ranged between 16 and 45 deaths per 100,000 population, lower than the global average of 93 deaths per 100,000. Additionally, the GCC countries recorded very low rates for deaths resulting from unsafe water, sanitation, or poor hygiene, with the highest recorded value not exceeding 0.1 deaths per 100,000 population. Concerning vaccination coverage, the GCC countries have approached comprehensive coverage limits, with rates exceeding 97%, compared to the global coverage rate of 84%. The GCC Statistical Center, headquartered in Muscat, Oman, serves as the official body accredited for data, information, and statistics related to the GCC countries. Established to be the official source of statistics, the center plays a crucial role in enhancing the statistical and information work of national statistical centers and planning agencies in the GCC countries. This report underscores the GCC countries' commitment to improving public health and achieving global health targets, reflecting their ongoing efforts to enhance the well-being of their populations.

GCC travel, tourism sector contributes RO95bn to GDP
By OUR CORRESPONDENT Muscat – The travel and tourism sector's contribution to the Gulf region's Gross domestic Product (GDP) reached an estimated RO95bn (US$247.1bn) by the end of 2024, accounting for approximately 11.4% of the region's total GDP. According to the latest data from the GCC Statistical Center, the sector has seen robust recovery and growth, with its contribution rising by nearly 31.9% compared to 2019 levels. The report also noted that the sector's share of the GCC's GDP in relation to the global GDP stood at 2.2% in 2024. Looking ahead, the travel and tourism sector in the Gulf is poised for continued expansion. By 2034, its contribution is projected to climb to 13.3%, or approximately RO142.8bn (US$371.2bn). The average annual growth rate over the 2024–2034 period is expected to exceed 4.2%. Intra-GCC tourism has also witnessed significant momentum. Between 2019 and 2023, the average annual growth in the number of tourists traveling between GCC countries surged by 41.5%, making up 26.5% of all international tourist arrivals to the region in 2023.
