'Planned It As Soon As I Saw...': Litton Das on Picking Mahedi Hasan For Colombo T20I
Mahedi Hasan produced career-best show with the ball to help Bangladesh win a historic T20I series.
Bangladesh captain Litton Das had identified spinner Mahedi Hasan for the third T20I at the R Premadasa Stadium against Sri Lanka as soon as he saw their tour schedule.
A four-wicket haul by Mahedi Hasan and a blistering half-century by Tanzid Hasan helped Bangladesh secure a series win as they beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third T20I on Wednesday. With this win, Bangladesh clinched the T20I series 2-1, following losses in the Test and ODI series.
'We felt that Mahedi's skills would be a perfect fit for the Colombo wicket. It doesn't mean he doesn't bowl well on other wickets. I had planned it as soon as I saw the schedule that Mahedi will be my first name in the line-up at this venue. It also doesn't mean that Mehidy (Hasan Miraz) is not a good bowler or batter. As a team leader, I will think deeply about the surface before choosing a team. A bowling-friendly surface will always make me pick Mahedi. If it is batting-friendly, Miraz will come back into the team," Litton said.
Mahedi delivered a fiery spell in the powerplay, reducing Sri Lanka to 49/4 in 7.4 overs. He completed his four-wicket haul by dismissing the set Pathum Nissanka (46 in 39 balls, with four fours), reducing Sri Lanka to 66/5.
Reflecting on his performance, Hasan said the ball was spinning in the last two games, so he stuck to his lines and lengths.
'I know the wickets in Sri Lanka, the ball was spinning in the last two games, so I stuck to my lines and lengths. The new ball had a bit of spin, so I tried to land it in good areas, and luckily, I was successful," Mahedi said.
In the match, Kamindu Mendis (21 in 15 balls, with a four and a six) and Dasun Shanaka (35* in 25 balls, with four fours and two sixes) made useful contributions, taking Sri Lanka to 132/7 in their 20 overs.
With one wicket each, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, and Shamim Hossain also contributed. During the run chase of 133 runs, Bangladesh lost Parvez Hossain Emon for a duck, but Tanzid Hasan (73* in 47 balls, with a four and six sixes) delivered a brutal counterattack, along with skipper Litton Das (32* in 26 balls, with two fours and a six), forming a 74-run partnership.
Tanzid remained till the end, along with Towhid Hridoy (27* in 25 balls, with a four and six), leading their team to victory with 21 balls remaining.
Nuwan Thushara and Kamindu each took a wicket. Mahedi's spell earned him the 'Player of the Match' award.

Oscar Piastri Edges Out Lando Norris As McLaren Claim 1-2 Finish At Belgian Grand Prix
Last Updated: Piastri won the Belgian Grand Prix, outpacing McLaren teammate Norris after a rain delay. Charles Leclerc held off Max Verstappen for third, marking a crucial podium for Ferrari. Oscar Piastri claimed a hard-fought victory at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, outpacing his McLaren teammate and title rival Lando Norris after a weather-interrupted start at Spa-Francorchamps. Following a delay of over an hour due to heavy rain, the race eventually got underway behind the safety car. Once green-flag conditions resumed on lap four, Piastri wasted no time overtaking Norris and taking control at the front. The Australian then built a solid lead, managing his pace expertly even as his tire wear became an increasing concern in the closing laps. Norris, despite closing the gap late in the race, could not mount a serious challenge, and Piastri crossed the line first to take his second career win. Norris, who had started alongside his teammate on the front row, remained within striking distance for much of the race but ultimately ran out of time—and tire life—to make a move. 'I gave it everything," Norris said post-race. 'Oscar did a great job today. It was tricky out there with the conditions and the tire wear, but we brought it home for a strong result for the team." Despite being the pre-race favorite, Verstappen struggled to find the pace in race trim and ultimately had to settle for fourth. Leclerc's result marks a crucial podium for Ferrari, who continue to battle Mercedes and Red Bull in the Constructors' Championship. A day earlier, Verstappen had managed to beat both McLaren drivers in the Sprint Race, finishing ahead of Piastri and Norris. However, McLaren's performance over the weekend confirmed the team's growing consistency and momentum in the championship fight. Delhi LG unveils restored Roshanara Club, calls it big moment for Delhiites
New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena on Sunday inaugurated the restored Roshanara Club, a heritage structure situated in North Delhi and regarded as the birthplace of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Spread across 22 acres, Roshanara Club has been a symbol of culture, sport, and heritage for over a century. 'It is a big moment for us as this heritage club has been restored and relaunched. I congratulate the citizens of Delhi on this occasion," Saxena said at the event. He added that several heritage structures in Delhi have been restored in the past three years, with more planned in the future. During his visit to the club on January 12, 2023, the Lt Governor found the once-prestigious institution in a state of serious neglect, with a crumbling facade and damaged infrastructure. 'The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) officially took over the sealed premises on September 29, 2023, and launched an extensive restoration drive under Saxena's continuous guidance," a statement said. The project aimed not only to restore the architectural beauty of the club but also to modernize it to meet contemporary recreational and fitness needs. 'The club's iconic features, including its European-style doors and windows, Mangalore-tiled roof, antique chandeliers, and wooden trusses, were carefully preserved. In addition, the club now houses a wide range of modern indoor facilities such as a lounge, dining hall, kids' play area, gym, card and billiards rooms, yoga and sauna areas, and a library," the DDA said said in the statement. Upgraded outdoor amenities include grass, clay, and synthetic tennis courts, cricket practice pitches, a mini football zone, basketball courts, and a dedicated jogger's park. With its restoration complete, Roshanara Club is once again poised to be a premier hub for sports, leisure, and cultural heritage in the capital. Rishabh Pant arrives in crutches at Old Trafford; will India batter join the fight as visitors push to save 4th Test?
Rishabh Pant's chances of batting in the second innings of the fourth Test on the fifth day looked bleak as the Indian vice-captain arrived in crutches on Sunday at Old Trafford. Pant, who took a hit while batting on the opening day of the Test match, has fractured his toe and wasn't in a situation to even stand. Despite the unbearable pain, Pant came out to bat on the second day, after having strong pain killers and scored a fifty. Dhruv Jurel has been keeping wickets for India in the Test match. While it was unclear whether Pant would bat or not, he might nit have to come out padded up unless India suffer a miraculous collapse. In a picture shared on social media by his Indian Premier League (IPL) Lucknow Super Giants, Pant was seen walking in crutches with his training kit on. After having conceded a first-inning lead of 311 runs, India started their second innings on a disastrous note losing both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan departing with no runs on board. Captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul revived the Indian ship with a 188-run stand for the third wicket before the latter missed century by 10 runs. Gill too perished after completing his hundred. Since then its all about all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, who have forged an unbeaten century-run stand to fight against England. If assumptions are to be believed In case the ongoing partnership is broken, Shardul Thakur will come out to bat before the pacers - Anshul Kamboj , Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj - come in, before Pant might arrive. Notably, all are capable of surviving the English bowling attack in the middle.
