Faheem Ashraf heroics in vain as Bangladesh clinch T20 series win after Pakistan batting fails again
Pakistan batters failed to come to terms with the slow nature of surfaces in Bangladesh once again as the Tigers successfully defended a target of 134 to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the T20 series in Mirpur on Tuesday. Bangladesh batters struggled on a two-paced pitch early on but were powered by a fighting fifty from Jaker Ali (55) and Mahedi Hasan (33). They were the only batters to reach double figures as the hosts battled their way to 133. However, the total proved enough against a batting line-up out of form. Pakistan lost their entire top order in the powerplay as Bangladesh seamers got the ball to move around corners. Pacers Shoriful Islam (3-17) Tanzim Hasan (2-23) decimated Pakistan's line-up, reducing them to 30-6 inside 10 overs. However, the tourists' lower order put up a fight. All-rounder Faheem Ashraf (51 from 32 balls) received excellent support from bowlers Abbas Afridi (19) and Ahmed Daniyal (17) as he took the team closer to the target. Pakistan had battled their way to 106-8 with two overs to go and 28 runs to get. Ashraf and Daniyal went after leg-spinner Rishad Hossain, hitting him for two fours and a six. But Ashraf continued to attack the spinner, losing his stumps on the final ball of the penultimate over to end a heroic innings. Left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman then got the defiant Daniyal caught in the deep as Bangladesh eked out an eight-run win after restricting Pakistan to 125. Earlier, fast bowlers Salman Mirza and debutant Daniyal grabbed two wickets apiece to restrict Bangladesh to 133. Mirza finished with 2-17 and Daniyal took 2-23 after Pakistan won the toss and sent Bangladesh into bat. Jaker hit a fiery 48-ball 55 for his third T20I fifty, smashing five sixes and a boundary before holing out off the final delivery of the 20th over. Fast bowler Afridi also grabbed 2-37. Bangladesh had lost four wickets by sixth over for 28 before Jaker and Mahedi revived the innings with a 53-run stand for the fifth wicket. Mahedi scored a 25-ball 33 with two sixes and as many boundaries. After the series defeat, Pakistan captain Salman Agha said his young team will learn from their mistakes. "The way we started bowling in the power play, we could have given like 10 fewer runs, but that's the way cricket goes," Agha said. "But 130 was what we thought we had under control. But the way we batted in the power play, I think that needs to be improved. "We don't want to give up no matter what situation we are in. We always think we can win the game. The way we played after, like, 15-5, I think, is outstanding. This is the kind of belief I want from my team." It was Bangladesh's first-ever series in the format against Pakistan. The tourists were dismissed for 110 in the first match, which the hosts won by seven wickets.

It will be the national anthem of Pakistan followed by the national anthem of Bangladesh. ! PITCH REPORT - Former Pakistani opener, Aamer Sohail, with the pitch report. He says that there has been rain around here in Dhaka, building up to the game. He mentions that the pitch sounds hard (as he knocks his hand on the wicket). He adds that there will be some moisture in the wicket and that will aid the spinners as well as pace off deliveries of pacers. He feels that the batters should look to get used to the pace of the wicket before playing their shots. ! Pakistan (Playing XI) - Fakhar Zaman, Saim Ayub, Mohammad Haris (WK), Salman Agha (C), Hasan Nawaz, Mohammad Nawaz, Khushdil Shah, Faheem Ashraf, Abbas Afridi, Salman Mirza (On T20I debut), Abrar Ahmed. ! TOSS - Bangladesh have won the toss and they will BOWL first. ! All eyes will be on how Bangladesh's newfound confidence, particularly their in-form batting unit and economical bowlers, stands up against a youthful yet determined Pakistani side aiming to continue their impressive head-to-head record. There's also a bit of rain around but let's hope that doesn't affect the contest much. Stay tuned for the toss and team news. ! The pitch at the Shere Bangla National Stadium is typically on the slower side, offering assistance to spinners as the game progresses. While pacers might find some early seam movement, batters who settle in can play their strokes freely. ! However, Pakistan will pose a formidable challenge despite some notable absentees. While key players like Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are missing, a young Pakistan side, led by Salman Agha, will be eager to assert their dominance. Historically, Pakistan holds a significant edge in T20I encounters, having won 19 out of 22 matches against Bangladesh, including a commanding 3-0 clean sweep in their most recent series a month ago in Lahore. The visitors will be looking to replicate that performance and maintain their winning rhythm away from home.

'Planned It As Soon As I Saw...': Litton Das on Picking Mahedi Hasan For Colombo T20I
Last Updated: Mahedi Hasan produced career-best show with the ball to help Bangladesh win a historic T20I series. Bangladesh captain Litton Das had identified spinner Mahedi Hasan for the third T20I at the R Premadasa Stadium against Sri Lanka as soon as he saw their tour schedule. A four-wicket haul by Mahedi Hasan and a blistering half-century by Tanzid Hasan helped Bangladesh secure a series win as they beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third T20I on Wednesday. With this win, Bangladesh clinched the T20I series 2-1, following losses in the Test and ODI series. 'We felt that Mahedi's skills would be a perfect fit for the Colombo wicket. It doesn't mean he doesn't bowl well on other wickets. I had planned it as soon as I saw the schedule that Mahedi will be my first name in the line-up at this venue. It also doesn't mean that Mehidy (Hasan Miraz) is not a good bowler or batter. As a team leader, I will think deeply about the surface before choosing a team. A bowling-friendly surface will always make me pick Mahedi. If it is batting-friendly, Miraz will come back into the team," Litton said. Mahedi delivered a fiery spell in the powerplay, reducing Sri Lanka to 49/4 in 7.4 overs. He completed his four-wicket haul by dismissing the set Pathum Nissanka (46 in 39 balls, with four fours), reducing Sri Lanka to 66/5. Reflecting on his performance, Hasan said the ball was spinning in the last two games, so he stuck to his lines and lengths. 'I know the wickets in Sri Lanka, the ball was spinning in the last two games, so I stuck to my lines and lengths. The new ball had a bit of spin, so I tried to land it in good areas, and luckily, I was successful," Mahedi said. In the match, Kamindu Mendis (21 in 15 balls, with a four and a six) and Dasun Shanaka (35* in 25 balls, with four fours and two sixes) made useful contributions, taking Sri Lanka to 132/7 in their 20 overs. With one wicket each, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, and Shamim Hossain also contributed. During the run chase of 133 runs, Bangladesh lost Parvez Hossain Emon for a duck, but Tanzid Hasan (73* in 47 balls, with a four and six sixes) delivered a brutal counterattack, along with skipper Litton Das (32* in 26 balls, with two fours and a six), forming a 74-run partnership. Tanzid remained till the end, along with Towhid Hridoy (27* in 25 balls, with a four and six), leading their team to victory with 21 balls remaining. Nuwan Thushara and Kamindu each took a wicket. Mahedi's spell earned him the 'Player of the Match' award. With ANI Inputs view comments First Published: July 17, 2025, 16:04 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Mahedi Hasan Breaks Harbhajan Singh's 13-Year-Old T20I Record
Mahedi Hasan played the starring role in Bangladesh's historic T20I series win over Sri Lanka. Mahedi Hasan produced a match-winning effort with the ball to help Bangladesh create history on Wednesday. Alongside Tanzid Hasan, Mahedi combined to guide Bangladesh to a historic T20I series win over Sri Lanka with an emphatic eight-wicket victory in the final match at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Mahedi finished with match figures of 4/11 from four overs and thus created a new record of best bowling performance at the venue in a T20I, surpassing the previous benchmark of 4/12 set by India legend Harbhajan Singh at the 2012 T20 World Cup. This victory marks Bangladesh's first-ever T20I series win against Sri Lanka, achieved with ease as they chased down 133 with 21 balls to spare. On a sluggish pitch, Mahedi triggered Sri Lanka's collapse with a remarkable spell of spin bowling, achieving career-best figures and dismantling the middle order after the hosts lost early wickets. Pathum Nissanka tried to anchor the innings with a steady 46 off 39 balls, but Sri Lanka slumped to 94 for 6 by the 15th over. Dasun Shanaka's late burst of 35 not out from 25 balls, including 22 runs in the final over, pushed the total to 132 for 7, but it was not enough. Bangladesh effortlessly pursued the target despite losing Parvez Hossain Emon on the first ball of the innings. Tanzid then took control with a brilliant display of power-hitting and timing, remaining unbeaten with 73 off just 47 deliveries, including six sixes. He received solid support from Litton Das, who added 32 before his dismissal in the ninth over. Towhid Hridoy joined Tanzid, and the pair put together an unbroken 59-run partnership to comfortably steer the visitors to victory in 16.3 overs. Sri Lanka's bowlers struggled to exert pressure after the early breakthrough, with both spinners and seamers unable to stem the flow of runs. The loss concluded the series on a disappointing note for the hosts, who had won the opening match but failed to maintain their momentum.
