British fintech Zilch on hunt for overseas bid targets

Yahoo13 hours ago
Zilch, the consumer lender which has become one of Britain's fastest-growing fintech companies, has begun a search for international takeover targets as it accelerates its expansion ahead of a bumper stock market listing.
Sky News understands that Zilch, which is run by co-founder Philip Belamant, is working with advisers to identify peers outside the UK which it can acquire in the coming months.
The company, which is regulated in the UK and counts eBay among its investors, has amassed a customer base of more than five million people.
Money latest:
It is now among the UK's most valuable fintechs, making its future public market debut a hotly contested prize for stock exchanges in London, New York and elsewhere.
Mr Belamant has been an active participant in talks with regulators and policymakers about reforms to London's listings regime amid growing concerns about the relative attractiveness of UK public markets.
Last year, he warned that Zilch could float outside the UK without meaningful efforts to incentivise "retail investors to buy and hold British stocks".
Sources close to the company said Zilch had generated more than £750m in savings on interest and fees for customers since its launch.
Payments through its platform now have a gross merchandise value of more than £4bn, they added.
Zilch has annual revenues of more than £150m, making it well-placed to snap up rivals which are too small to raise additional capital or list on the public markets, according to insiders.
In recent months, the company has also been exploring its own private share sale to raise funding, having hired Citi to work on the mandate.
Its last fundraising valued the company at about £1.5bn.
Other Zilch investors include Goldman Sachs and Ventura Capital.
Zilch secured authorisation from the City watchdog in 2020 and now offers customers a digital debit Visa card earning up to 5% of spending in rewards.
In the same app, customers can switch to a credit card, allowing customers to spread repayments with zero interest over six weeks or three months, enabling them to build their credit record.
The company differentiates itself from other Buy Now Pay Later companies because it is already regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
In total, Zilch has raised £500m in equity and debt since it was founded.
The company employs more than 250 people.
Zilch declined to comment on Friday.

It has bought the stakes of founder Nicolas Beytout as well as those of other shareholders including Théthys, which is owned by L'Oréal's Bettencourt founding family; American businessman Ken Fisher, and Dow Jones, the group owned by media titan Rupert Murdoch. According to sources with knowledge of the matter, the acquisition was done through the group's Ufipar subsidiary. Hilton's to open Curio Collection hotel in UK in 2026

Hilton is continuing the expansion of its Curio Collection hotel brand in the UK with the signing of the Derby London City, which is set to open in early 2026. This development, signed under a franchise agreement with real estate developer and operator Dominus, marks the brand's tenth property in the UK. It also reflects Hilton's growing luxury and lifestyle portfolio, which recently celebrated its 1,000th hotel launch worldwide. Hilton UK, Ireland and the Nordics development vice-president Nick Smart said: 'Curio Collection by Hilton's continued expansion in the UK is a testament to the popularity and commercial success of our forward-thinking lifestyle brand.' The hotel will be owned by Dominus and managed under its Dominus Hospitality platform. The project involves transitioning a previous office space on Great Tower Street into the latest hospitality venture. Located in London's financial district, the Square Mile, the Derby London City aims to serve the needs of business travellers with 237 guest rooms, including ten suites. The property will offer an all-day dining restaurant, a 24-hour gym, meeting rooms, and private dining facilities. Dominus CEO Preet Ahluwalia said: 'As owners and operators of Lost Property St Paul's, we knew we could leverage our expertise, in partnership with Hilton, to deliver another Curio Collection hotel in a prime location. 'Since we acquired the site on Great Tower Street in 2023, we've taken a sustainable design approach to refurbishing and upgrading the existing building, to create a hotel that pays tribute to the past and offers an exceptional guest experience in the heart of London.' The property is set to support the City of London Corporation's Destination City programme, which aims to promote the Square Mile as a location for both business and leisure. City of London Corporation Planning and Transportation Committee chairman Tom Sleigh said: 'The City of London's new hotel stock will play a major role in realising the 'Destination City' growth strategy, by helping to accommodate the rapidly rising numbers of visitors and workers coming to the Square Mile, every day.' The Derby London City becomes part of Dominus's existing hotel portfolio, which encompasses properties such as Lost Property St Paul's London, Curio Collection by Hilton, and Hampton by Hilton Bath City. Last month, Hilton continued its expansion by unveiling The Marcus Portrush, a Tapestry Collection hotel, marking the brand's entrance into Northern Ireland, UK. KFC to open 50 new stores across UK in 2025

Fast food giant KFC has unveiled plans to establish more than 50 new dining locations across the UK in 2025, forming a key part of a £1.5bn ($2.04bn) investment to expand its presence in the UK and Ireland (UK&I). Currently operating 1,000 restaurants nationwide, KFC has set a target to open 500 additional venues by 2034. BDC Magazine reports that the restaurant company has pledged £466m up to 2030 to drive this expansion, while also committing to revamp more than 200 existing sites to upgrade facilities and improve customer satisfaction. To achieve this growth, KFC is searching for both freehold and leasehold properties, focusing on sites in retail parks, leisure complexes, high streets, transport hubs, shopping centres and food courts. The chain is particularly interested in drive-through locations ranging from 0.3 to 1.5 acres and in-line units spanning between 1,200ft² and 2,500ft². The expansion will cover all regions of the UK and Ireland, with a strong emphasis on accessibility and prominence. To encourage property experts to identify suitable locations, KFC is offering a £20,000 finder's fee for successful site recommendations. The initiative highlights KFC's confidence in the UK and Irish markets and its dedication to long-term development. In November 2023, KFC UK&I collaborated with Uber Direct to facilitate fast order deliveries to its customers in the region. Orders placed by the customers via the KFC app will use the same tech and courier network that powers Uber Eats.
