New vision shows moment it all went wrong for fan who broke neck in fall
A new video of the moment a Pittsburgh Pirates fan fell 6m after leaping up with excitement and plunging to the field shows what might have caused the harrowing plunge.
Kavan Markwood, 20, is shown from behind jumping to his feet before his leg clips the railing directly in front of him in new footage of the horrific PNC Park incident taken during April 30's game against the Chicago Cubs and shared by CBS News.

The heart-stopping video, taken by security cameras inside the stadium during the bottom of the seventh inning, shows a shirtless Markwood, wearing beige shorts, springing to his feet before flipping over the railing as he celebrated an RBI double from the Pirates' Andrew McCutchen.
The fall is being treated as 'accidental in nature' by Pittsburgh Public Safety, which investigated the incident.
Markwood, who broke his neck, back, and collarbone, is a former star football player at South Allegheny High School.
Earlier vision of the incident showed him dramatically tumbling to the playing field.
After being admitted to Allegheny General Hospital in a critical condition last Wednesday, Markwood was alert and awake as of Saturday night, after a 'miraculous' recovery, according to Jennifer Phillips, who organised a GoFundMe for him.
Markwood was treated by trainers from both the Cubs and the Pirates as EMS and police responded immediately to remove him from the field following the fall from the Clemente Wall over on the right field bleachers onto the warning track.
A second fan also jumped onto the outfield from a lower section to help Markwood.
The game was delayed for about 10 minutes before play resumed.
'We are all deeply saddened and truly heartbroken after the terrible accident that occurred last night,' Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting said in a statement on Thursday.
'It was one of the most difficult moments many of us have ever experienced. We are devastated. Pirates baseball is a community, and our fans are like family. In times like these, we must come together, support one another, and keep him and his loved ones in our prayers.
'We also want to thank and appreciate the efforts of the first responders who rushed to his attention and provided him with compassionate care,' Nutting added.
PNC Park was in the news again in the past week after a stadium employee got into a fight with a fan during a game on Sunday.
The employee is seen throwing at least three punches at the fan and whipping them with a belt following an animated argument, video posted on social media of the incident during the game against the San Diego Padres shows.
The employee has since been suspended and an investigation has been launched, the club said in a statement.
'We are aware of the unfortunate incident that occurred following the conclusion of [Sunday's] game between a PNC Park game day employee and a guest,' the statement read. 'The employee's behaviour was entirely unacceptable, and he was immediately suspended. This incident is currently under further investigation.'

World erupts over man spotted talking to Taylor Swift at Stanley Cup Final
Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift might be enchanted with ice hockey now. The star couple was on hand at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers on Friday (AEST). Kelce wore a red top with red shorts as he rocked a white and red 'Palm Tree Crew' Panthers hat while Swift appeared to keep her look neutral. Watch every game of the Stanley Cup Final LIVE with ESPN on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. They were even spotted chatting it up with NHL icon Wayne Gretzky in their suite, and taking selfies with a few fans. Swift, 35, has had plenty of viral hockey moments in life, including a reveal of the 2009-10 Predators then-new third jerseys during a concert in Nashville and, four years later, taking a picture with former Hurricanes star Joel Skinner, even holding up his jersey. She also donned New York Islanders gear in a skit with Jimmy Fallon for the 'Tonight Show' in 2015. Kelce, who previously posted about his love of playoff hockey, and his brother Jason debated in October on the 'New Heights' podcast about which NHL players could also play in the NFL, and they named Oilers star Connor McDavid as one who could. TV cameras quickly spotted Swift and Kelce in the stands at Amerant Bank Arena in Florida, with the superstar couple engrossed in the action as the game went to overtime. There was no shortage of cutaway shots of Swift in the crowd on the TV coverage. After Edmonton tied the game at 3-3, Swift's Shake It Off played through the arena and TNT sideline reporter Jackie Redmond joked she was the 'official Taylor Swift correspondent'. 'Listen guys, as the official Taylor Swift correspondent, I think it's important to note that after taking a 3-nothing lead and blowing it to the Edmonton Oilers, they opted to play Shake It Off by Taylor Swift here in the arena,' Redmond said. 'Though I don't think that helped the crowd feel any better about what's transpired here.' Speaking on TNT's in-game coverage, Gretzky remarked: 'I don't know Pink Pony but I know who she (Swift) is', referring to Swift's cover of Chappell Roan's song Pink Pony Club. He chuckled, adding: 'I'm just telling the truth.' Sports writer Richard Deitsch joked on X: 'I will never watch the NFL again if TNT Sports or Sportsnet's cameras show Taylor Swift at this Stanley Cup Finals game. 'Watching sports on television is my blank space and I will not let Swift ruin it for me.' taylor swift showing up to sports games and ruining the fragile male ecosystem one arena at a time is my favorite movie. i love it here — bethany ∘°âˆ˜â™¡âˆ˜°âˆ˜ eras forever (@corneliastagain) June 12, 2025 Swift and Kelce were on the edge of their seats as Florida's Sam Reinhart slotted a goal from close range with 20 seconds remaining in the game to make it 4-4 and force overtime. It took more than 10 minutes of overtime for Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl to break the deadlock and score the matchwinning goal for a 5-4 victory. It was a gutsy win by the Oilers, who levelled the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final series 2-2. Oilers star Connor McDavid, a three-time NHL MVP, is chasing a Stanley Cup trophy to cement his legacy as arguably the greatest ice hockey since Gretzky. A Canadian team hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 1993, and the Oilers last won the Stanley Cup back in 1990. Swift and Kelce hadn't been sighted in public often since Kelce's Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl in February. In April, a source told Page Six that Swift and Kelce have enjoyed a 'special' off-season, which has largely been low-key after the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl to the Eagles. 'They are making the most of their time off together. They are hanging out with friends, too. It's a special time for them,' the source said. The two were spotted last month in Philadelphia to celebrate Mother's Day, though before that, they opted out of the Met Gala in New York due to scheduling issues. Kelce, who announced earlier this off-season he is coming back to the Kansas Chiefs for at least one more NFL season, will likely have more of Swift at games this year as she is not touring this coming season. 'This fall will be completely different. It's the first season where she's not constantly flying back and forth or working around an entire touring calendar.' The Panthers entered Game 4 leading the series 2-1 and took a 3-0 lead early in the game, only for the Oilers to mount a comeback and tie the game at 3-3 in the second period. There are rumours that Swift and Kelce are already engaged and are set to get married soon. Meanwhile, Swift is reportedly planning a year long 'honeymoon' by taking a year off from her music career to celebrate owning all her early music records.

Teacher fired for reading slur aloud in popular classroom book
A teacher in Washington state said he was recently fired for reading his class a passage from To Kill a Mockingbird without censoring the n-word. Matthew Mastronardi, a Spanish teacher at West Valley High School in Spokane, was filmed reading out loud a section of the 1960 Harper Lee novel about racism and injustice in the Jim Crow-era Deep South. The Spanish teacher said in a lengthy X post Wednesday that he only spoke the slur — which is used repeatedly in the classic work — as a 'teachable moment about context and literary honesty in reading' when he heard students saying they felt they 'must 'skip over the n-word'.' 'I was astonished and expressed disagreement, saying, 'That's silly; it undermines the book's historical context and disrespects the author's intent to use accurate language',' Mastronardi said. 'A girl asked me in front of the class, 'Would you read the word?' I replied, 'Yes, I would read every word'.' Unaware that he was being recorded, Mastronardi — who admitted being 'nervous but committed' — said he then chose to read out the passage in front of the 30 students as a 'teachable moment.' Within days, the teacher said he was slapped with a verbal warning from the principal before later being told he could either resign or face not having his contract renewed. After refusing to quit, Mastronardi was served a non-renewal notice, he said. The school repeatedly stated the decision wasn't solely down to the book saga — but officials apparently refused to provide other reasons, he claimed. 'There are no parent complaints, no documented disciplinary actions and I've passed every teaching evaluation,' he said. Mastronardi said he now has one last chance to appeal at a school board meeting on June 25. The iconic novel about racism and injustice in the Jim Crow-era Deep South tells the story of a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. The acclaimed novel, which is told through the eyes of a young white girl, uses the slur dozens of times. The Post reached out to West Valley High School about Mastronardi's firing but didn't hear back immediately.

American woman's wild find in pharmacy freezer aisle
A shopper has taken to social media with a 'public service announcement' after heading over to her frozen food aisle to purchase some ice cream. The American woman was shopping at CVS, a pharmacy and retail store in the United States, when she wanted to pick out a tub of her favourite frozen treat. However, she was forced to ring a buzzer and wait for an employee to unlock the fridge so that she could access the ice cream section. 'This is a public service announcement, stop stealing from these people's store because why do I have to push a button to get some ice cream?' she asked. 'That's crazy.' When the employee came out, the woman tried to ask why it was locked up but the employee didn't answer. The move to lock up supermarket items isn't one solely seen in the US, with both Coles and Woolworths placing items such as Manuka Honey, deodorant and other beauty items behind locked screens. Social media users' jaws dropped while watching the clip, with many confused as to why the frozen treat was locked up. 'Who the hell is stealing ice cream,' one person blatantly asked. One defended the employee, saying, 'She's probably over it, too. These decisions to lock up things aren't decided at store level, but higher level. Especially if the location has a lot of theft in the area.' 'They're not stealing ice cream I've seen people LICKING and taking chunks from the tubs and putting them back,' one person revealed. One added: 'Girl, I had to push for face wash and they made me leave it at the service desk until I was finished shopping. $9 Cetaphil. insane.' 'It's not even so much as people stealing it, but they will pick it up out of the freezer, then set it somewhere on the other side of the store, and when we find it, it's made a mess,' another added. One said: 'If it's locked up I simply will not buy it. I'm not standing here for 10 minutes waiting for the one employee scheduled on the floor when I can do a drive up pick-up.' 'I don't understand … it's not stopping anything. You can walk away with it, eat it and leave it. If you unlock the makeup, they just hand it to you. you can still steal it! locking it up does nothing,' another commented. Someone else weighed in: 'I think the reasoning for locking up ice cream was because of that one girl who went to a supermarket and licked all the ice cream that people were going to purchase.'
