Toronto film festival's TV lineup adds Jude Law, Ethan Hawke, Toni Collette shows
Festival organizers say its Primetime slate will open with Hulu's 'The Lowdown' from 'Reservation Dogs' co-creator, writer and director Sterlin Harjo. It stars Hawke as a Tulsa citizen journalist obsessed with exposing corruption.
Meanwhile, Netflix hits the fest with two limited series: 'Black Rabbit,' starring Law and Bateman as brothers who run a Manhattan restaurant and VIP lounge; and the Canadian drama 'Wayward,' about a school for troubled teens starring Martin and Collette, Ryan Scott and Sarah Gadon.
The lineup hints at the star wattage bound TIFF's 50th edition Sept. 4 to 14, since organizers say all Primetime screenings will include an extended Q+A with creators and cast.
TIFF also announced 48 films in its Short Cuts program, and introduced a new award for best animated short, joining the fest's two prizes for international and Canadian shorts.
The 48 shorts include the world premieres of 'Dust to Dreams' directed by actor Idris Elba and starring singer Seal; and 'The Contestant,' starring David Hasselhoff, from duo Patrick Xavier Bresnan and Ivete Lucas.
North American premieres include Joecar Hanna's 'Talk Me," executive produced by Spike Lee, and 'The Non-Actor' starring Maya Hawke and Victoria Pedretti.
The 20 Canadian titles include 'The Girl Who Cried Pearls' from Oscar-nominated animators Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski and the satire 'Bots' from 'Scarborough' directors Rich Williamson and Shasha Nakhai.
Kelly Fyffe-Marshall of the TIFF '22 feature 'When Morning Comes' joins the shorts lineup with 'Demons' while Chelsea McMullan of the TIFF '23 ballet doc 'Swan Song' returns with 'Healer.'

Netflix renews 'One Piece' for Season 3 — and reveals an epic first look at Season 2
With Japan's annual One Piece Day winding down, Netflix marked the occasion with a bombshell of an announcement. Netflix unveiled a teaser trailer for "One Piece" Season 2, giving fans a first look at the Straw Hats' next chapter on the high seas, and confirmed "One Piece" season 3 is already in the works. Given all the fanfare, it's possible Netflix could be aiming to fast-track production this time around, a welcome change after having to wait almost three years between the first two seasons. Production for Season 3 will kick off later this year in Cape Town, South Africa. No release window has been confirmed yet. Netflix also announced that "Marvel's Luke Cage" and "Iron Fist" producer Ian Stokes will join "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" writer Joe Tracz at the helm for Season 3. Tracz became co-showrunner in Season 2 and has been shepherding the season through post-production following the departure of Season 1's co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer Matt Owens in March. Along with the Season 3 renewal news, Netflix unveiled an exciting first-look at the upcoming Season 2, which premieres in 2026. You can check it out below. The trailer gives fans plenty to chew on, including the return of familiar faces such as Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), Nami (Emily Rudd), Usopp (Jacob Romero), and Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu). You can also spot two newcomers: Lera Abova as Nico Robin and Callum Kerr as Smoker. "One Piece's" sophomore outing is expected to cover most, if not all, of the Arabasta saga, including the Reverse Mountain, Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island arcs. In Eiichiro Oda's original manga, the Arabasta Saga lasted 117 chapters. Considering the live-action series's first season adapted roughly 100 chapters, we're likely to see part of the Arabasta saga spill over into Season 3. Another Season 2 newcomer, Joe Manganiello, has already teased that his character Mr. o will be back for the third season, which seems to confirm this. In a press release, Netflix said "One Piece" Season 2 promises 'fiercer adversaries and the most perilous quests yet." The official logline reads: 'Luffy and the Straw Hats set sail for the extraordinary Grand Line — a legendary stretch of sea where danger and wonder await at every turn. As they journey through this unpredictable realm in search of the world's greatest treasure, they'll encounter bizarre islands and a host of formidable new enemies.' While we don't know when to expect "One Piece" Season 3 just yet, a release date is likely just over the horizon. This buddy cop comedy is one of three Netflix action movies you need to watch (August 2025)
This month on Netflix, we're spotlighting the action comedy. What's better than mixing in a few laughs with some fight scenes and explosions? Our first movie features an actor — the funniest man alive — reprising a legendary role in Beverly Hills. Our second pick is a buddy cop movie from the '90s featuring an indelible duo. Finally, we're taking you back to 1980 to experience some blues music. All three action movies are now streaming on Netflix. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024) More often than not, legacy sequels fail to recapture the magic of their predecessor. Look no further than Space Jam: A New Legacy, Zoolander 2, The Exorcist: Believer, and Jaws: The Revenge as examples. Luckily for the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, it has Eddie Murphy, who reprised his iconic role as Axel Foley in the surprisingly effective fourth outing, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. When Axel Foley (Murphy) heads back to Los Angeles, it's personal. He's looking to reconnect with his daughter, Jane Saunders (Taylour Paige), a defense attorney. When a criminal organization zeroes in on Jane, Axel teams with her ex-boyfriend (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his two old friends, Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton), to protect his daughter. You can't fake charisma, and when Murphy slips back into Axel's fast-talking ways, the movie soars. Stream Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F on Netflix. Rush Hour (1998) I'm unaware of the national consensus on Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker as a buddy cop duo. For me, they're top draft picks. The martial arts star and the comedic lightning rod joined forces in 1998's Rush Hour. After the kidnapping of a Chinese diplomat's daughter, Hong Kong Detective Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) travels to America to work the case. However, the FBI does not want Lee to be involved, so they assign him to be the LAPD's problem. Enter Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker), the obnoxious and smooth-talking cop tasked with babysitting Lee. Lee and Carter initially hate each other. However, the duo realizes that their best chance of saving the little girl is to work together. From Chan's extravagant fight choreography to Carter's crisp one-liners, Rush Hour is a classic '90s comedy that remains a gold standard for chemistry between co-stars. Stream Rush Hour on Netflix. The Blues Brothers (1980) With elaborate car chases and thunderous explosions, The Blues Brothers is most definitely an action comedy. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd star as Jake and Elwood, the Blues Brothers, based on their excellent sketch from Saturday Night Live. After being released from jail, Jake reunites with Elwood and checks in on the Catholic orphanage that raised them. Unfortunately, the orphanage will close unless they pay $5,000 in property taxes. After an epiphany, Jake and Elwood decide to reform their band, the Blues Brothers, and organize a concert to raise money. Along the way, the Blues Brothers are chased by Neo-Nazis, rival bands, police, and a sadistic woman. The music is great, the chases are exciting, and the laughs are nonstop. Sports podcasters recall exchange with Jordon Hudson: 'We talked to her for five hours'
Jordon Hudson, whose romance with former NFL coach Bill Belichick has been closely followed, continues to make headlines. The 24-year-old recently called "The Sports Gossip Show," co-hosts Charlotte Wilder and Madison Hill said. Hudson's relationship with Belichick had been a topic of conversation on the podcast in the past. Wilder recalled the encounter with Hudson during a recent episode, saying the former cheerleader introduced herself as "the president of your universe." The video description for the episode, titled "Jordon Hudson called us and it didn't end well," said Hudson called Wilder roughly two weeks prior to the latest show's publication date. The description also noted that show has "covered" Hudson's personal and professional life "extensively." At one point during the conversation, the podcasters joked Hudson has been their "white whale," shortly before recalling attending the Miss Maine pageant. Hudson competed in the pageant. The hosts said Hudson began following them on social media after they posted about and covered the pageant. After realizing Hudson was a social media follower, the podcasters said they reached out to request Hudson be a guest of the show. She later unfollowed the account, the hosts said. After making initial contact, "Madeline and Charlotte then spent five hours over the course of the week talking to her, and thought there was a good chance she would come on the show," per the description. When she called, Wilder said Hudson introduced herself as "the president of your universe." Wilder said the intent behind Hudson's call was not immediately clear. Wilder eventually determined Hudson primarily wanted to discuss their coverage of the Miss Maine pageant. Hill was later brought into the discussion. The three then engaged in group FaceTime calls. At one point, the podcasters said Hudson suggested she would be open to coming on the podcast for an interview. Wilder also alluded to some miscommunication surrounding the Miss Maine edition of the show that was initially believed to be Hudson's primary concern. "She's yelling at me. She's crying. She said that she finished the rest of the Miss Maine episode and she didn't like what we said," Wilder said. "And I was like, 'Wait what?' I was like, 'I thought we've been talking about the Miss Maine episode that we did that you watched the whole time?'" Wilder admitted "there was this tension in the calls" and it "felt like we were always waiting for the other shoe to drop." The host said they gave Hudson a heads-up that they would discuss the exchange they had with her on the podcast regardless if she ended up being a guest. Belichick is scheduled to make his North Carolina football head coaching debut on Sept. 1. Tar Heels football players have insisted the coach's personal life hasn't disrupted the team in any way. "Social media can promote some narrative, but that was not a distraction to us at all," wide receiver Jordan Shipp said. "There was never a problem, like people saying she was running practice. We'd never really see her in the building. That was never a problem." Belichick described the increased attention focused on his personal life as "just noise." "Sometimes it's noisy, and sometimes it isn't," the coach told ESPN. "Sometimes with the Patriots it was noisy, too." Fox News Digital reached out to Hudson for comment.
