India squad for England Test tour LIVE Updates: Gambhir, selectors to reportedly pick captain today
India squad for England Test tour LIVE Updates: All eyes are on India head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI selectors as a crucial meeting is reportedly set to take place today in Mumbai to decide the new captain. We will bring you all the latest updates from this meeting and more on who can be a part of Indian cricket team's Test squad for England tour.
It can be a big day in Indian cricket today as reportedly, head coach Gautam Gambhir is set to meet the BCCI selectors in Mumbai to decide the next captain. Who will it be, Shubman Gill or Jasprit Bumrah? Follow our blog for all the latest news.
Some of the most trusted sources have picked Gill as the next possible captain of the Indian Test team, which is a surprise considering he only averages 35.05 in 32 Tests and England is a tough place to start captaincy. But Bumrah's injury issues, it seems, have gone against the pacer.
'The other choice is Bumrah. You say, 'Boss, you're the captain'. And whichever Test match he doesn't play, you give KL Rahul the responsibility.'
'Who's a ready-made captaincy candidate now? Shubman Gill? I don't think he is still a certainty in the XI,' Srikkanth told India Today. 'You're not handing the captaincy to KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant. Otherwise, you give it to Jasprit Bumrah.
The 1983 World Cup winner feels the captain should be someone who is a sure shot starter. 'As of now, I think Bumrah should be the captain. If I were the chairman of selectors, I would make Bumrah the captain. And then I'd say, 'Boss, play whichever matches you want to'. I'd then appoint KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant as vice-captain, because these are certainties in the XI,' he further added.
India squad for England Test tour LIVE Updates: The Indian cricket team for the upcoming Test tour can come anytime. The head of the Indian cricket team, Gautam Gambhir, and the BCCI selectors, including the head of the panel, Ajit Agarkar, could meet today (15 May, Thursday) in Mumbai to decide the new captain.
Shubman Gill is tipped as the favourite to replace former Indian Test team captain Rohit Sharma, who retired a week ago. However, given Gill's lack of experience and the fact that he is yet to establish himself in the format, the role could go to Jasprit Bumrah.
India's next Test captain: Gill or Bumrah?
Bumrah captained India in the Perth Test in Australia, which India won and is an all-format player. If selectors do not pick the pacer as the captain, then Rishabh Pant can also be an option.
There are also rumours that Karun Nair or Ishan Kishan could return to the Indian Test squad, but things will only become clear after the squad is announced officially. We will bring you all the latest updates regarding the Indian Test squad here on our live blog.

MS Dhoni's 100-crore defamation suit: Madras HC orders commencement of trial
The Madras High Court on Monday ordered that a trial commence in what is now a 10-year-old defamation suit which was filed by former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni is seeking Rs 100 crore in damages from Zee Media Corporation, journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer G Sampath Kumar, and News Nation Network for having dragged his name in the Indian Premier League betting scam. Dhoni has told the court that he would be available for examination as well as cross-examination between October 20 and December 10 this year, according to a report in The Hindu. The report added that Justice CV Karthikeyan had appointed an advocate commissioner to record evidence from Dhoni on a 'mutually convenient' premises in Chennai. The court said this was being done because the the court wanted to avoid chaos on the court premises if Dhoni was to make an appearance. Senior counsel PR Raman submitted an sworn affidavit from Dhoni, where he has shown his intent to proceed with the trial in the defamation suit. While Dhoni filed the suit in 2014, the trial has been pending for 11 years because of multiple applications taken out by the defending parties seeking relief. Back in 2014, it was reported that Dhoni, in his suit, had submitted that the defendants had run defamatory and scandalous false reports since February 11, 2014. Dhoni's suit had mentioned how Zee Media Corporation Limited, known as Zee News, and Sudhir Chaudary, Editor and Business Head of Zee News Channel (known as the first and second defendants) in collusion with IPS officer G Sampath Kumar (the third defendant) have been telecasting and broadcasting and posting in their websites false reports insinuating that Dhoni was involved in illegal activities of betting, match fixing and spot fixing. Similarly, News Nation (defendant no 4) had joined the tirade against Dhoni and later on went to the extent of stating that Dhoni was summoned by the Tamil Nadu police, which was also utterly false, the affidavit had stated.

Secret behind Mohammed Siraj's strong legs is nalli gosht biryani and paya: Azharuddin
Mohammed Siraj's spectacular performance in England has not just been credited to his skills with the ball, but also to his favourite food- nalli gosht biryani and paya. Former Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin believes these dishes have helped the pacer build the strength he needs to deliver match-winning the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Siraj featured in all five Tests and finished as the leading wicket-taker with 23 scalps at an average of 32.43. In the absence of India's spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj took the responsibility and took two five-wicket hauls as well. According to Azharuddin, Siraj's love for the rich, protein-packed dish has played a part in his physical fitness, especially in building strong was outstanding. Thanks to nalli gosht biryani and paya [which are his favourite food] he has developed a strong body, particularly his legs. He showed a lot of enthusiasm and energy. Throughout the series he had the hunger to excel and deliver for India,' Azharuddin told Mid-Day. The former skipper was particularly impressed with Siraj's match-winning spell in the fifth and final Test at the Oval.'That spell at the Oval was incredible. He took on the responsibility admirably in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. He came hard at the England batters and bowled with a lot of intensity. He is clearly the new super star of Indian sport,' he the final morning at the Oval, England looked firm favourites to win the match and the series 3-1. However, India's hero Mohammed Siraj had other plans. The 31-year-old picked up three wickets in no time, helping India register a memorable six-run victory, eventually drawing the five-match series the first ball of the series to the last ball which rattled Gus Atkinson's off stump, the lion-hearted Siraj remained committed to giving his best for the team. And if Azharuddin's words are anything to go by, who hails from the same birthplace, Hyderabad, it seems a plate of biryani and a bowl of paya might just be part of the secret behind that success.- EndsMust Watch
