Senior IPS officer Rajeev Krishna has been appointed as the acting director general of police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh, marking another transition in the state's top police leadership.
Krishna, a 1991-batch Indian Police Service officer, assumed charge following the retirement of acting DGP Prashant Kumar on May 31. This makes him the fifth consecutive officer to be appointed in an 'acting" capacity since 2022.
Founding chief of UP ATS, pushed tech-driven policing
Known for his integrity and innovative approach to policing, Krishna previously served as the director general of vigilance and chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board.
Born on June 26, 1969, in Noida, Rajeev Krishna began his policing career in 1991. He has held several key positions, including senior superintendent of police (SSP) in cities like Agra, Lucknow, and Bareilly. He gained prominence in 2004 for his decisive action against kidnapping gangs, solidifying his reputation as a tough and effective officer.
Krishna also served as the founding chief of Uttar Pradesh's Anti-Terror Squad and held significant roles such as director general of the Police Academy and inspector general of operations in the Border Security Force. His tenure was marked by the implementation of technology-driven policing initiatives like Operation Pehchaan and e-Malkhana, aimed at modernising the force and raising cybercrime awareness.
Family in public service
His brother-in-law, Rajeshwar Singh, a former IPS officer, is now a member of the legislative assembly (MLA) from Sarojini Nagar in Lucknow.
Rajeshwar's wife, Lakshmi Singh, serves as the police commissioner of Gautam Buddha Nagar.
'Acting' appointments
Since the removal of Mukul Goel as the permanent DGP in May 2022, Uttar Pradesh has seen a series of acting police chiefs. Goel was dismissed for 'neglect of duty" and reassigned as director general of Civil Defence.
Following his departure, the state appointed Devendra Singh Chauhan as acting DGP, who served until his retirement in March 2023. He was succeeded by RK Vishwakarma, who held the position until May 2023. Vijay Kumar then took over as acting DGP, followed by Prashant Kumar, who served until his retirement in May 2025.
Rajeev Krishna's appointment continues this trend of interim leadership within the state's police force.
New rules for selecting DGP
In November 2024, the Uttar Pradesh government introduced the Director General of Police, UP Selection and Appointment Rules, 2024, to formalise the appointment process for the state's police chief. Under these rules, a six-member committee, chaired by a retired high court judge, will oversee the selection.
The committee comprises the chief secretary, a nominee from the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the chairperson or a nominee from the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission, the additional chief secretary (home), and a retired DGP. The committee will assess candidates based on service records, experience, and a minimum of six months of remaining service. The appointed DGP will serve a fixed term of two years or until retirement, whichever is sooner.
Rajeev Krishna's appointment as acting DGP comes as Uttar Pradesh strives to enhance its law enforcement capabilities and restore public confidence.

DHAKA: At least 20 political parties, including former PM Khaleda Zia's BNP, Monday rejected Bangladesh chief adviser Muhammad Yunus 's extended time frame for conducting national election, demanding it be held by Dec. Sources, however, said three political parties, including the radical Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP launched by Nahid Islam who led the anti-Sheikh Hasina movement last year, are reportedly supporting Yunus's time frame of holding the poll between Dec 2025 and June 2026. "There is not a single valid reason to push the national election after Dec and BNP expects a 'neutral role' from Muhammad Yunus in taking a final decision," BNP member Salahuddin Ahmed said after the National Consensus Commission dialogue with Yunus. This was the second round of talks between political parties and the Yunus-headed interim govt on the election - pending since last year following the fall of the Hasina-led govt. In Monday's meeting, all but three political parties have demanded elections by Dec, Gono Odhikar Parishad chief Nurul Haque Nur said. Yunus expressed optimism about finalising a broadly accepted 'July Charter' - an agreement built through collective understanding among parties after the ouster of the Hasina govt. Salahuddin hoped Yunus will consider Dec for conducting the election. He also argued the commission has already taken significant time and election before year-end remains feasible. "Full consensus may not be support reforms that benefit the nation and ensure inclusion of all," he added.

PM to meet delegations after world tour next week
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet the seven multi-party delegations, which are currently touring key international capitals to underscore India's zero-tolerance for terrorism and New Delhi's 'new normal' against the menace, sometime next week, people aware of developments said on Monday. According to the people cited above, the date for Modi's meeting is yet to be finalised but it might happen on June 9 or 10. Before the PM meets all seven delegations, they will debrief external affairs minister S Jaishankar in a process starting from Tuesday with the team led by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Baijayant 'Jay' Panda, the people added. Panda's delegation, which left Delhi on May 24, is set to be the first to return home after visiting Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Algeria. The meeting with Jaishankar is scheduled at 2.30pm on Tuesday. The delegation comprises BJP leaders Nishikant Dubey, Phangnon Konyak, Rekha Sharma, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi, nominated Rajya Sabha member Satnam Singh Sandhu, former minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, and former foreign secretary Harsh Shringla. The PM's decision to meet all the delegations is a significant step as top-ranking functionaries suggested that the main idea to send the teams across the globe after Operation Sindoor came from the PM. It will be the first interaction between the PM and the delegations, which began leaving Delhi on May 21. The multi-party delegations—comprising 59 lawmakers, in addition to former diplomats — have already covered a bulk of their itinerary of 33 countries, including the European Union. The leaders, briefed by foreign secretary Vikram Misri before leaving Delhi, have focused on exposing Pakistan's duplicity on combating terror by showing pictures of the country's army general attending funeral of terrorists killed during Operation Sindoor and the discovery of 9/11 accused Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad, and underlined how repeated peace initiatives by New Delhi met with disappointment and more attacks, people familiar with the matter said. All seven delegations – headed by senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor; Bharatiya Janata Party leaders Ravi Shankar Prasad and Panda; Janata Dal (United) leader Sanjay Jha, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Supriya Sule, and Shiv Sena leader Shrikant Shinde – have met parliamentarians, ministers, government officials and policy makers to exchange views on furthering cooperation on counterterrorism and combating radicalism, especially after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians dead. Operation Sindoor was India's direct military response to the April 22 terror strike at Pahalgam in Kashmir that killed 26 civilians in what was the worst attack on civilians since the 26/11 Mumbai strikes. India launched the operation in the early hours of May 7, bombing nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The pre-dawn strikes --- which killed at least 100 terrorists --- sparked a series of attacks and counter attacks across the western border, involving fighter jets, missiles, armed drones, and fierce artillery and rocket duels. In one such counterattack on the night of May 9-10, the air force struck targets at 13 Pakistani air bases and military installations. After four days of fighting, military hostilities were stopped on May 10 as the two nations reached an understanding. The move to send political delegations abroad started on May 17, roughly a week after India and Pakistan agreed to an understanding to cease hostilities. In Algiers, Panda said that India's appeal to place Pakistan back on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list was gaining significant resonance globally, emphasising the role of illicit financing in fuelling terrorism. 'Pakistan is not interested in improving itself or helping its people... They have diverted the money for terrorism and its army and looted it... Terrorism is fuelled by two things. One is ideology and the other is illicit finance... Ideology-wise, these Islamic countries have taken a strong stand... They do not permit any kind of fundamentalism from their soil... In Paris, former Union minister M J Akbar asserted India's clear and thought-through 'no first use' doctrine on nuclear weapons and said, 'Pakistan is a military state, it is no longer a civilian state. And a military state has a vested interest in conflict because conflict justifies its presence… Now, it sometimes thinks it can provide a nuclear shelter to terrorists. The Prime Minister (Modi) has made it very clear that there can be no nuclear blackmail.' In Tokyo, Trinamool Congress lawmaker Abhishek Banerjee said, 'If terrorism is a rabid dog, Pakistan is a vile handler…We are here to share the message and the truth that India refuses to bow down. We will not kneel to fear. I belong to a political party that is in the Opposition. It is in the public domain that I have said that Pakistan needs to be taught a lesson in the language they understand,' he said.

Haryana liquor vend auctions under criminal cloud, police to up vigil
Chandigarh: Taking note of gangsters and small-time criminals firing gunshots to intimdate people participating in the auction of liquor vends, Haryana Police have announced that they would enhance the deployment of emergency response vehicles (ERVs), which are units that respond to emergency calls made to the police control room. Police have also that they have identified 4,900 notorious elements, including persons with a criminal history, to be put under direct surveillance to check their movement and activities to prevent crimes and anti-social activities. All this came to light during a meeting chaired by Haryana director general of police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapoor with senior officials on Sunday evening. During the meeting, he issued directions to officers to enhance the operational efficiency of ERVs. He said ERVs were the "face" of Haryana Police, and their primary responsibility was to respond promptly and act effectively upon receiving information about any incident. It was informed in the meeting that approximately 4,000 police personnel are deployed with ERVs in the state. The DGP said a technical audit of ERV operations was necessary and suggested that technical support could be sought from the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC). He instructed senior officers to regularly inspect ERVs and assess key metrics such as response time, time of arrival at the incident spot, and the subsequent action taken. The DGP issued clear instructions that strict legal action must be taken under a policy of zero tolerance against offenders. "Anyone exploiting the public, issuing threats, or engaging in illegal extortion must face stringent legal consequences," the DGP said in the meeting. Top excise officer names 4 districts Haryana commissioner and secretary (excise and taxation) Ashima Brar also participated in the meeting chaired by DGP Shatrujeet Kapoor on Sunday. She mentioned that liquor vend auctions will be conducted over the next month, and heightened vigilance was needed in four districts—Bhiwani, Hisar, Rohtak, and Yamunanagar. To ensure fearless participation by contractors in the auction, DGP Kapoor directed all district police chiefs to build a sense of trust among vendors and conduct regular blockades and intensive surveillance drives. He instructed coordination with the excise department to develop an effective plan and to keep a close watch on miscreants throughout the auction process, which will continue until June 30.
