We're Physical Therapists. This Is Our No. 1 Unexpected Pooping Hack.

While most of us wouldn't want to admit it, we've sat on the toilet and had some, uh, trouble, right? Even if you eat plenty of fiber, stay hydrated and move your body regularly, you may have experienced this less-than-ideal circumstance in the bathroom.
If it makes you feel any better, you're one of many: Constipation is the most common gastrointestinal complaint, leading to 2.5 million doctor visits a year. Plus, 12% of people worldwide have self-reported being constipated, and people in the Asian Pacific and the Americas suffer twice as much as Europeans.
If you identify with those statistics, you've probably already tried common go-to treatments, such as taking laxatives and eating more fiber. As useful as they can be, they aren't as fun as the unexpected pooping hack that physical therapist Karan Rajan shared on Instagram and that others have confirmed: blowing bubbles.
'What's going on here is you are engaging the diaphragm and pelvic floor muscles in a way that helps with pushing,' explained Lalitha McSorley, the owner, lead physical therapist and pelvic floor therapist at Brentwood Physio. 'It also helps relax your lower abdomen during a bowel movement.'
McSorley continued that the point is not to blow as hard as you can, but to let out a more controlled, gentle exhale. 'Think like a long and steady breath that helps you focus on relaxing your pelvic floor,' she added.
For another way to explain how hard to blow: 'The force is enough that you want to make it audible, as if you are doing a 'breathy whistle' where someone 20 feet away could still hear you,' said Heather Jeffcoat, the owner of Femina Physical Therapy and the most recent past president of the Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy.
So, having a cup of water and a straw isn't necessary; you can just exhale. But for kids, the bubble option is undoubtedly more enjoyable — and can even be beneficial.
'A cup of water with a straw gives a visual cue and can help make things more fun for kids,' McSorley said. 'After all, being constipated isn't fun and can sometimes be quite painful.'
As mentioned earlier, at-home treatment and preventive options include drinking more water, eating more fiber, using an enema and taking laxatives. You might also just find yourself on the toilet straining, frankly, which is both tempting and, unfortunately, unhelpful. (It can cause hemorrhoids, anal fissures, extra tight muscles down there and — sorry to say — anal leakage.)
So, how does blowing bubbles compare?
'The best program to help with constipation is one that addresses all factors that are contributing to it,' Jeffcoat said. In other words, it's probably in your best interest not to ignore those tips.
However, this hack has its place, too. 'Blowing bubbles teaches your abdominal wall and pelvic floor to work together in a way that helps encourage a bowel movement to happen,' Jeffcoat said. 'It prevents something called 'dyssynergic defecation,' which is the medical term for your pelvic floor muscles doing the opposite of what they should be doing when you have a bowel movement.'
When More Serious Treatment Is Needed, And What That Entails
As helpful (and interesting) as this tip is, it's not a foolproof solution — especially not 100% of the time. Keep monitoring any gastrointestinal symptoms.
'If constipation is ongoing, especially if straining is associated with it, you will likely have medical assessments to determine what the specific issues are when you have a bowel movement,' Jeffcoat said.
Other concerns requiring medical attention include pain, discomfort or any kind of bleeding.
Treatment options may include prescription medications, stool testing, bloodwork, biofeedback or a colonoscopy, according to McSorley.
'It's important to listen to your body,' she continued. 'If something doesn't feel right, you know best … go seek professional advice from your doctor or a pelvic floor therapist.'

A South Lake Tahoe resident has tested positive for the plague — yes, the same pest-transmitted disease estimated to have killed 25 million Europeans in the Middle Ages. It is believed that the person contracted the rare and dangerous disease after being bitten by an infected flea while camping in the South Lake Tahoe area, according to El Dorado County health officials. The patient is currently under the care of a medical professional and recovering at home, health officials said. 'Plague is naturally present in many parts of California, including higher elevation areas of El Dorado County,' said Kyle Fliflet, El Dorado County's acting director of public health, in a statement. 'It's important that individuals take precautions for themselves and their pets when outdoors, especially while walking, hiking and or camping in areas where wild rodents are present.' Plague is a very serious disease but can be treated with easily available antibiotics, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The sooner a patient is diagnosed and receives treatment, the greater their chances of making a full recovery, according to the CDC. The disease is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis and is most commonly spread to humans by bites from infected fleas, according to El Dorado County health officials. The disease can also be spread by infected-rodent bites or by exposure to infected dogs and cats. The disease is extremely uncommon and infects on average seven people in the U.S. per year, according to the CDC. Nevertheless, it must be taken seriously due to the high potential for death if left untreated. The last plague case reported in El Dorado County was in 2020 and was also believed to be transmitted in the South Lake Tahoe area, health officials said. Two California plague cases were reported in 2015, likely caused by bites from an infected flea or rodent in Yosemite National Park. All three patients received treatment and made a full recovery, health officials said. There were 45 ground squirrels or chipmunks recorded with evidence of exposure to plague bacterium in the Lake Tahoe Basin from 2021 to the present, according to the California Department of Public Health, which routinely monitors rodent populations for plague activity across the state. El Dorado County health officials urged residents and visitors to take steps to avoid exposure to rodents or ticks when exploring the wilderness around Lake Tahoe. Measures include wearing long pants tucked into boots, using a bug repellent with DEET, never feeding or touching rodents, refraining from camping near animal burrows or dead rodents, and leaving dogs at home when possible. More than 80% of plague cases in the U.S. have been in the bubonic form, where patients will develop swollen, painful lymph nodes called buboes, according to the CDC. This form of the disease typically results from an infected-flea bite, and symptoms such as buboes, fever, headache, chills and weakness develop within two to eight days, according to the CDC. In July, an Arizona resident died of the pneumonic form of the plague, which can develop when bacteria spreads to the lungs of a patient with untreated bubonic plague. This is the most serious form of the plague and can have an incubation period of just one day. It's also the only form of the plague that can spread from human to human. During the Middle Ages, infected rats were to blame for the black death in Europe in the 14th century. The last urban rat-infected plague outbreak in America took place in Los Angeles in 1924 and 1925, according to the CDC.

Access to effective and affordable contraception remains highly unequal across Europe — but most countries are heading in the right direction. The latest Contraception Policy Atlas by the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual and Reproductive Rights (EPF) shows that 22 out of 47 countries now include contraceptives in their national health systems. Counselling services are also covered in all of them except Austria. The report also notes that nearly a quarter of European countries provide high-quality, government-run websites offering clear information about contraception. In 17% of countries, emergency contraception is available free of charge at pharmacies or public health centres. Western Europe continues to lead in access. France and Luxembourg are at the top of the ranking with scores of 93.2%, followed closely by the United Kingdom (91.6%), Portugal (91.2%), and Belgium (90.3%). At the other end of the scale are Poland (33.2%), Hungary (40%), Cyprus (42.1%), Slovakia (44%), and Greece (49%) — all ranked among the lowest in access. The researchers who compiled the 2025 Atlas recognised the policy developments in countries such as Austria, Ireland, and Luxembourg. They also recommended that policymakers extend coverage, enhance counselling services (particularly in rural and remote areas), and monitor the development of new technologies to combat misinformation and guarantee reproductive autonomy for all Europeans. According to the latest available figures, 8.5% of women in Europe aged 15–49 want to stop or delay having children, but are not using contraception.
