Canada's Stanley Cup drought is decades long: Can Edmonton Oilers end it?
Canada's Stanley Cup drought is decades long: Can Edmonton Oilers end it? Show Caption Hide Caption Are Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup bound? Former NHLer weighs in Former NHL winger Riley Cote explains what he loves about this Edmonton Oilers team ahead of the Western Conference Finals. Sports Seriously Hockey is considered Canada's sport, but it has been decades since a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup. The Montreal Canadiens won the NHL championship in 1993 — at a time when having a Canadian winner seemed to be the rule. A Canadian team won seven consecutive seasons (Edmonton Oilers five times and the Canadiens and Calgary Flames once each) from 1984-90. A Canadian team reached the Stanley Cup Final every year from 1982-90, and there were all-Canada finals in 1986 and 1989. But no champion since 1993. The Vancouver Canucks lost in the 1994 Final and a Canadian team didn't make it back until 2004. The 2025 Oilers will be the latest team to try to end the drought, getting another shot after falling short last season against the Florida Panthers. Explaining Canada's Stanley Cup drought: The last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup The 1993 Canadiens won behind goalie Patrick Roy, 10 consecutive overtime victories and a successful stick measurement challenge against the Los Angeles Kings' Marty McSorley in the Final. "The two teams had their sticks in the hallway, so we saw it there and we saw it on the ice," then-coach Jacques Demers told USA TODAY Sports years later. "We also knew that McSorley wouldn't change his stick at the end of the period." The Canadiens didn't do anything about it in a Game 1 loss. But when they trailed 2-1 late in the third period of Game 2, Demers challenged the curve on McSorley's stick. Canadiens defenseman Eric Desjardins scored on the ensuing power play and also in overtime and Montreal went on to win the series in five games. "We had some players with illegal sticks," Demers said. "They had some players with illegal sticks. We just happened to pick on McSorley." What led to Canada's Stanley Cup drought? The poor value of the Canadian dollar, compared with the U.S. dollar, hurt teams north of the border because their revenue was in Canadian dollars but they paid players in U.S. dollars. It made it harder for Canadian teams to hang on to their stars until a salary cap (instituted in 2005) and revenue sharing helped the smaller markets. At the same time, there was a migration south of the border. Arena issues led the Quebec Nordiques to move to Denver in 1995. The Colorado Avalanche won in their first season there after trading for Roy. The Winnipeg Jets moved to Arizona in 1996 and became the Coyotes (now Utah Mammoth). Canada got a team back in 2011 when the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg and became the current Jets. Only one team can win the Stanley Cup and the United States has 25 teams to Canada's seven. Which Canadian teams have reached the Stanley Cup Final since 1993? 1994: The Canucks rallied to tie the series after trailing three games to one, but the New York Rangers won Game 7 at home for their first championship since 1940. 2004: The Flames lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames had a chance to clinch in Game 6, but a would-be go-ahead goal by Martin Gelinas was (seemingly) missed. The Lightning won in double overtime and captured Game 7 at home. 2006: The Oilers tied the series after trailing 3-1 but the Carolina Hurricanes won Game 7 at home. 2007: The Ottawa Senators lost to the Anaheim Ducks in five games. 2011: The Canucks blew 2-0 and 3-2 series leads against the Boston Bruins and lost Game 7 at home. 2021: The Canadiens, who advanced to the third round out of an all-Canada division, fell to the Lightning in five games in the Final. 2024: The Oilers lost the first three games but rallied to win the next three. The Panthers won Game 7 at home. Can the Edmonton Oilers end the drought? They have a good chance. They have home-ice advantage this year, they know what to expect from the Panthers and there's a different vibe having gone through this before. "It feels less big," Oilers star Connor McDavid said of a second consecutive trip to the Final. "Last year, it felt monumental, it felt very dramatic. This year, it feels very normal." McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, high picks in the 2015 and 2014 drafts, respectively, will lead the way and are joined by fellow draft picks Evan Bouchard, Darnell Nurse, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Stuart Skinner. The team has filled in over the years with free agents and trade acquisitions such as Mattias Ekholm, Evander Kane, Corey Perry and others. The Oilers, though missing Zach Hyman, are healthier and deeper than last year. They're also playing the type of lockdown defense that wins championships. "If there's a breakdown, there's usually someone that is there to help," McDavid said. "I think we've been really good in our own zone." Two of three USA TODAY voters picked Edmonton to win. "We're looking to finish the job," McDavid said.

5 high school students receive McShorley scholarship
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Binghamton Noon Rotary Club is helping some Binghamton High School seniors prepare to pursue their collegiate degrees. The service club announced the recipients of its annual McSorley high school scholarships. The students are chosen based on their potential to excel academically, thrive in the world of work and for their ability to serve their communities in the tradition of Rotary's motto service above self. The five recipients are Jaezelle Darrah who plans to study nursing, Nevaeh Martins who will pursue sports broadcasting, Alexea Oliveri who will major in psychology and minor in criminal justice, Colin McGovern who wants to become a math professor, and my daughter Olivia Ehmke who will study musical theater. Olivia says she was blown away by the generosity of the $1,000 award. 'It's just so important to encourage kids to go on to college and pursue what they love. I think a lot of kids couldn't do it without scholarships. Also, there's something to be said, even apart from the money, that recognition of what you have done throughout your high school years has made an impact,' said Olivia. Olivia says it was the only scholarship application process that involved being interviewed by a panel of Rotary members. She says she enjoyed the process and thought it gave them the opportunity to get to know her better. The McSorley scholarship is funded by contributions by Binghamton Rotary members, matched by member Jeff Cull. State-of-the-art technologies available at Harbour View Medical Center
SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The new Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center, a project two years in the making, is set to open next week and will offer new state-of-the-art technologies for patients in Hampton Roads. The hospital will be the first in the region to feature 'smart patient' rooms to ensure privacy, comfort and safety. 'The patient is always first and is on the forefront of our mind when it comes to talking about what is most important,' said Kristen McSorley, vice president of nursing at Harbour View Medical Center. 'It's more about, how do we better communicate with our patients? But also, for the workflow of the providers, the nurses, we actually reviewed input from our staff. We had them come in throughout the building process to allow us to provide them with a room [and ask them] where do you want to see things put in a room that allows for a better workflow?' The rooms will include privacy-controlled glass, integrated sensor technology in patient beds, and AI integration. 'So the AI is built into the ceiling, and with that comes the ability for us to add an extra layer of safety,' McSorley said. 'So we do have a sensor that allows us to be notified if a patient is laid on their side too long and it's time to turn. The other feature that we saw earlier was the patient safety camera. That is a live feed needed for patient safety to ensure that they're not getting out of the bed too soon. That way it gives us the ability to get in, see what the needs are that the patient may have and make sure that we meet them before any harm is done.' Harbour View Medical Center will also be one of two locations in Hampton Roads to use the Da Vinci Series 5, the latest in surgical robotics. 'We are implementing truly state-of-the-art technology that is all designed around keeping our patients safe, keeping them informed about their care, and ensuring they have access to the services when and where they need them,' said Andy Spicknall, Harbour View Medical Center president. Final beam put into place on new hospital in in Suffolk The hospital is set to open its doors Monday. For those hoping to find out more before then, or see these new technologies for yourself, an open house for the public will be held Saturday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. We're Physical Therapists. This Is Our No. 1 Unexpected Pooping Hack.
While most of us wouldn't want to admit it, we've sat on the toilet and had some, uh, trouble, right? Even if you eat plenty of fiber, stay hydrated and move your body regularly, you may have experienced this less-than-ideal circumstance in the bathroom. If it makes you feel any better, you're one of many: Constipation is the most common gastrointestinal complaint, leading to 2.5 million doctor visits a year. Plus, 12% of people worldwide have self-reported being constipated, and people in the Asian Pacific and the Americas suffer twice as much as Europeans. If you identify with those statistics, you've probably already tried common go-to treatments, such as taking laxatives and eating more fiber. As useful as they can be, they aren't as fun as the unexpected pooping hack that physical therapist Karan Rajan shared on Instagram and that others have confirmed: blowing bubbles. 'What's going on here is you are engaging the diaphragm and pelvic floor muscles in a way that helps with pushing,' explained Lalitha McSorley, the owner, lead physical therapist and pelvic floor therapist at Brentwood Physio. 'It also helps relax your lower abdomen during a bowel movement.' McSorley continued that the point is not to blow as hard as you can, but to let out a more controlled, gentle exhale. 'Think like a long and steady breath that helps you focus on relaxing your pelvic floor,' she added. For another way to explain how hard to blow: 'The force is enough that you want to make it audible, as if you are doing a 'breathy whistle' where someone 20 feet away could still hear you,' said Heather Jeffcoat, the owner of Femina Physical Therapy and the most recent past president of the Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy. So, having a cup of water and a straw isn't necessary; you can just exhale. But for kids, the bubble option is undoubtedly more enjoyable — and can even be beneficial. 'A cup of water with a straw gives a visual cue and can help make things more fun for kids,' McSorley said. 'After all, being constipated isn't fun and can sometimes be quite painful.' As mentioned earlier, at-home treatment and preventive options include drinking more water, eating more fiber, using an enema and taking laxatives. You might also just find yourself on the toilet straining, frankly, which is both tempting and, unfortunately, unhelpful. (It can cause hemorrhoids, anal fissures, extra tight muscles down there and — sorry to say — anal leakage.) So, how does blowing bubbles compare? 'The best program to help with constipation is one that addresses all factors that are contributing to it,' Jeffcoat said. In other words, it's probably in your best interest not to ignore those tips. However, this hack has its place, too. 'Blowing bubbles teaches your abdominal wall and pelvic floor to work together in a way that helps encourage a bowel movement to happen,' Jeffcoat said. 'It prevents something called 'dyssynergic defecation,' which is the medical term for your pelvic floor muscles doing the opposite of what they should be doing when you have a bowel movement.' When More Serious Treatment Is Needed, And What That Entails As helpful (and interesting) as this tip is, it's not a foolproof solution — especially not 100% of the time. Keep monitoring any gastrointestinal symptoms. 'If constipation is ongoing, especially if straining is associated with it, you will likely have medical assessments to determine what the specific issues are when you have a bowel movement,' Jeffcoat said. Other concerns requiring medical attention include pain, discomfort or any kind of bleeding. Treatment options may include prescription medications, stool testing, bloodwork, biofeedback or a colonoscopy, according to McSorley. 'It's important to listen to your body,' she continued. 'If something doesn't feel right, you know best … go seek professional advice from your doctor or a pelvic floor therapist.' HuffPost.

Trace McSorley is returning to Penn State as assistant quarterbacks coach
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley will return to the Nittany Lions as assistant quarterbacks coach. McSorley was a three-year starter for the Nittany Lions (2016-18) and a sixth-round pick by Baltimore in the 2019 NFL draft. He appeared in three games for the Ravens over two seasons and started one of his six games for Arizona in 2022. He was on practice squads for the Bears and Steelers before Washington released him in training camp last year. Penn State announced McSorley's hiring on social media. He will work with quarterbacks coach Danny O'Brien. They'll have a three-year starter in Drew Allar, who led the Nittany Lions to the College Football Playoff semifinals last season.
