Lorch not in coach Cardoso's plan at Sundowns
Thembinkosi Lorch appears to have no future at Mamelodi Sundowns, with sources indicating the former PSL Footballer of the Season is not part of head coach Miguel Cardoso's plans.
Lorch was among the first casualties following Cardoso's arrival last December, having been loaned to Wydad Casablanca just a month later. Rushine de Reuck also departed during the same window, joining Israeli side Maccabi Petah Tikva on loan.

Lorch impressed during his stint at Wydad, particularly with his performances at the FIFA Club World Cup, sparking speculation that he could be reintegrated into the Sundowns setup. However, Phakaaathi understands that Cardoso remains unconvinced and is looking to move in a different direction.
The 32-year-old failed to report for pre-season, prompting the Sundowns hierarchy to explore possible exit options. Having signed from Orlando Pirates in a high-profile switch in January 2024, Lorch's move to Chloorkop has ultimately failed to live up to expectations.
He is currently training on his own while plotting his next move, which is believed to be in North Africa. Cardoso, who has consistently expressed a preference for a smaller squad, has already approved de Reuck's switch to Simba SC in Tanzania.

Lorch is expected to be the next to leave as Sundowns continue to trim their squad for the new season with other big-name players expected to depart the Chloorkop-based side.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, however, stated that the youngsters are not expected to carry the team on their shoulders, as they are still undergoing gradual development. 'We started working with these youngsters last year, but Mabena was injured,' said Cardoso during the launch of the Betway Premiership this week. 'Letlhaku has been with us. 'That's the way we've been doing things — following procedures that we believe are right for developing youngsters, and teaching them the tools they need at a professional level. 'These are things they didn't have at Diski or youth level in order to succeed. As the level rises, they need to develop additional skills too. 'We are trying to upgrade them, but obviously there's been great work done by the coaches who worked with them before. 'The challenges are much bigger now. From time to time, we shouldn't expect them to carry the responsibility of a team like Sundowns, though we do expect them to succeed.'

Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Chippa United coach Sinethemba Badela is aiming to turn the club into a more competitive force as they begin yet another season with fresh leadership at the helm. The Chilli Boys face a tough opening fixture. They host reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturdya in a 3pm kickoff. The Eastern Cape outfit last met Sundowns in league action in a match that ended in a heavy 3-0 defeat. Since then, they parted ways with former coach Thabo September, and now Badela steps in with the responsibility of guiding the club toward a more respectable finish this season. Badela, who previously worked as an assistant and development coach at Sundowns, was also part of Rhulani Mokwena's staff during their brief spell with Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca, which lasted just one season. He believes that the experience he gained working under Mokwena has equipped him well for his first stint as a head coach in the top flight, and he is looking forward to the challenge ahead. "It's been unbelievable to be mentored by coach Rhulani," Badela said at the Betway Premiership launch. "To be by his side and learn from him every day — he has taught me a lot of things and how to win. Everything I know I have learned from him. 'He has supported me a lot, so I feel privileged to have worked with him, and I'm looking forward to taking this challenge at Chippa United. "It's not an easy project, but I am excited about it. We are building a new team, and hopefully I can take everything that I have learned from coach Rhulani at Sundowns — because he is the one that brought me closer to the first team, he took me with him to Wydad — and hopefully I can take all those things that I learned from him and obviously also add some of my ideas.'

Betway Premiership opening weekend: Every fixture and kick-off time
The wait is almost over for the start of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season, the 30th PSL season since the advent of the professional era in 1996/97. A full round of eight fixtures will be contested between Saturday, 9 August and Sunday, 10 August. There are six matches scheduled for Saturday and a further two on Sunday. As a reminder, Mamelodi Sundowns head into the season as defending champions and are searching for a record-extending ninth-consecutive title. Few would bet against them doing so! New teams to look out for are Durban City and Orbit College who were promoted to the top-flight. There will of course be no Royal AM this season nor Cape Town City FC who were relegated. Also, SuperSport United were sold and bought by Calvin Lee John, the son of Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, for a reported R50 million. The team will now be known as Siwelele FC.
