German aviation lobby warns of economic fallout as airlines withdraw over costs

Reuters2 days ago
BERLIN, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Airlines are withdrawing aircraft from Germany due to soaring state-imposed costs, the German Aviation Association (BDL) said on Monday, warning of significant economic fallout.
The number of planes stationed in Germany has dropped from 190 in 2019 to 130 this year, resulting in an estimated loss of 10,000 jobs and 4 billion euros ($4.66 billion) in annual economic value added, BDL said.
"Since 2019, state-imposed costs have more than doubled, and airlines are increasingly avoiding Germany," said BDL President Jens Bischof, urging the government to prioritise post-pandemic recovery in the aviation sector.
The industry has criticised Berlin's decision to postpone a planned reduction in aviation tax, arguing that reversing the May 2024 hike would have signalled support for carriers.
State levies, including taxes, air traffic control fees and security charges, are expected to rise by 1.1 billion to 4.4 billion euros this year, hampering recovery, said BDL.
Passenger numbers rose just 3% in the first half of the year to 99.4 million, far below the 10% growth seen a year earlier.
Germany ranks 28th out of 31 European countries in post-pandemic aviation recovery, with seat capacity at 87% of 2019 levels, compared with a European average of 104%.

The superpowers have discussed using Israel's occupation of the West Bank as a model for ending the war in Ukraine, sources said. The idea was first raised weeks ago in discussions between US envoy Steve Witkoff and his Russian counterparts, a source close to the US national security council told the paper. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says European leaders and Zelensky had a "constructive" meeting with Trump about Ukraine. Zelensky insisted there must be a meeting between all the three leaders of Ukraine, Russia and the US after he was snubbed from Trump and Putin's head-to-head on Friday. He said hopes a ceasefire will be the main topic of discussion in Alaska - and Merz reassured that Trump will make that his "priority". Ursula von der Leyden, European Commission President, said they had a "very good" call with Trump. She said: "Today Europe, the US and NATO have strengthened the common ground for Ukraine. "We will remain in close coordination. Nobody wants peace more than us, a just and lasting peace." More to follow... Trump wants Ukraine to have say on territory talks with Russia, Macron says

BERLIN/KYIV, Aug 13 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump has said Ukraine must be involved in talks about territory in any ceasefire deal with Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday. The comments were the first indication of what came out of talks between Trump, European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, intended to shape Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. Trump's insistence on involving Ukraine, if confirmed, could bring a measure of relief to Ukraine and its allies, who have feared that Trump and Putin could reach a deal that sells out Europe's and Ukraine's security interests and proposes to carve up Ukraine's territory. Trump and Putin are due to meet in Alaska on Friday for talks on how to end the three-and-a-half-year-old conflict, the biggest in Europe since World War Two. Trump has said both sides will have to swap land to end fighting that has cost tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions. On a day of intense diplomacy, Zelenskiy flew into Berlin for German-hosted virtual meetings with European leaders and then with Trump. The Europeans worry that a land swap could leave Russia with almost a fifth of Ukraine and embolden Putin to expand further west into the future.

Israel says it kills 5 militants posing as U.S. charity personnel

JERUSALEM, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Israel's military has said it killed five armed militants in the Gaza Strip pretending to work for the U.S.-based World Central Kitchen charity which condemned anyone posing as humanitarian personnel The military said it confirmed the five were not affiliated with the charity before killing them in an air strike last week while wearing WCK garb and posing a threat to Israeli troops. "The terrorists deliberately affixed the emblem and wore yellow vests in an attempt to conceal their activity and avoid being targeted, cynically exploiting the status and trust afforded to aid organizations," it said. WCK said late on Tuesday that it was contacted by Israeli authorities and confirmed the vehicle and people were not linked. "We strongly condemn anyone posing as WCK or other humanitarians as this endangers civilians and aid workers," it said in a statement on X. In December, WCK fired dozens of Palestinians working for the charity in Gaza, employees told Reuters at the time, after Israel said at least 62 staff were linked to militants. Israel's military did not give any identities of those killed in last week's incident. The WCK did not give more details or say whether the people targeted had been previously affiliated with the organization. An Israeli strike in April of last year hit a convoy of three vehicles and killed seven staff of WCK, including foreign aid workers. Israel apologised for what it said was a mistake. Aid organizations are struggling to meet the needs of Gaza's more than 2 million population after nearly two years of war have devastated the Palestinian enclave, killing tens of thousands of people and causing widespread hunger. Israel has often said Hamas militants infiltrate aid groups, while humanitarian organizations have urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government to ease aid restrictions.
