Vijayawada: The high court on Wednesday directed the chief secretary to consider the DGP's request for sanction of funds to give publicity on road safety in electronic and print media and take a decision within 10 days.
The court also directed AP Fibernet to file a status report on the technological integration of issuing challans by way of automatic detection of violations.
Thandava Yogesh, who filed the PIL challenging the inaction of authorities in implementing road safety rules, argued that deaths due to road accidents are more than those of murders in the state. He said while only 925 people were killed in Andhra Pradesh in 2024 according to NCRB data, more than 8,000 people were killed in road accidents because of non-implementation of various rules intended for road safety.
Yogesh further stated that the number of deaths involving two-wheeler accidents is on the rise, increasing from 3,703 to 4,276.
The HC bench, headed by Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Ravi Cheemalapati, asked why the number of deaths is increasing despite more people wearing helmets. Yogesh stated that helmet rule is being implemented only in Vijayawada and various other violations are also contributing to the increase in the number of deaths.

Rape case: Kerala HC allows complainant to implead in rapper Vedan's pre-arrest bail plea
Kochi: High court on Monday allowed the de facto complainant, a young doctor, to be impleaded as a respondent in the pre-arrest bail petition of Malayalam rapper and lyricist Hiran Das Murali, popularly known as 'Vedan', in a rape case based on her complaint alleging sexual exploitation under the false promise of marriage. The bench of Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas further adjourned the petition to Tuesday to provide additional time to the complainant for submitting further documents and for obtaining instructions from the state. According to the prosecution, Vedan allegedly sexually exploited the complainant between August 2021 and March 2023 at various locations in Kochi and Kozhikode by making false promises of marriage. From March 2023 onwards, he reportedly began distancing himself from her, which prompted her to file a complaint with the Thrikkakara police. On Monday, the complainant made serious allegations against the petitioner, stating that he is a habitual offender and that two more cases have been registered on the complaints of two women alleging similar offences. At this stage, HC orally observed that each case will have to be considered on its merits. Meanwhile, Vedan's counsel opposed the allegations raised by the complainant and contended that such petitions were filed only with the aim of abusing him. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? He further claimed that a woman circulating such messages had threatened that a group had been formed to orchestrate multiple complaints from different individuals to tarnish his reputation. Vedan, while admitting that he was in a relationship with the complainant, also cited the Supreme Court's observation that a promise to marry, followed by a breakdown of the relationship, does not by itself amount to rape merely because the complainant later alleges sexual abuse. Row over Indian-origin truck driver Harjinder Singh: California Guv's office says he entered US under Trump presidency
Indian-origin truck driver Harjinder Singh who killed three in Florida got his driving license in California. California Governor Gavin Newsom's office passed the buck on President Donald Trump on the issue of illegal alien Harjinder Singh who has been charged with vehicular homicide after his wrong U-turn killed three people in Florida. 35-year-old Harjinder, who is from India, has a commercial driver's license in Dem-ruled California that triggered a political slugfest with Republicans blaming Dem states of becoming the sanctuaries of illegal aliens. Newsom's office said Singh entered the US in 2018 when Trump was the president. Under California's law, one gets a commercial driver's license only when they have a lawful presence in the country, Newsom's office said. Deportation after criminal proceedings The video of Harjinder and a co-passenger inside the truck moments before taking the wrong turn went viral. The accident took place on August 12 near Fort Pierce on the Florida Turnpike when Singh turned his tractor-trailer through an "unauthorized location" which was meant of office use only. After the video went viral, it was found out that Singh entered the US illegally through the southern border in 2018. It's not clear how he managed a driver's license if he was an illegal alien. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Singh faces three counts of vehicular homicide. These licenses are marked "not for federal identification."
