#IDontKnowHomeMinister' goes viral, G Parameshwara tells trolls to find out who is the best
"Ask ChatGPT. It says Parameshwara is the no.1 home minister in India. Let the trolls verify that," he shot back at reporters in Tumakuru, visibly irritated as the hashtag #IDontKnowHomeMinister (Kannada: #GottillaGruhasachivaru) trended on social media.
The trolling began after Parameshwara admitted he had "no idea" why cooperation minister KN Rajanna had suddenly resigned. Netizens quickly dug up a series of past press interactions wherein his replies began with the now-famous two words.
Memes, reels, and sarcastic posts flooded timelines.

Unfazed, Parameshwara explained, "If I don't have the details, I won't speculate. As home minister, I can't say something casually. If people want to troll me, that's their right."
Earlier, he warned the Tumakuru media not to find mistakes and vilify the district. "Inform us before mistakes happen and tell us to rectify it before publicizing them," he said.

Freedom from sitting on floor: Over 90k school kids in UP dist get desks, chairs
Pilibhit: It's "freedom from floor" at last for thousands of school children in UP who until now had to sit on the ground in dilapidated classrooms or in the open under a tree for their daily lessons. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Affected teachers told TOI on Monday that this was the first time "perhaps in decades" that so many children -- over 90,000 across hundreds of govt primary schools in Pilibhit district -- have received desks and chairs. The change was initiated during a task force meeting when Pilibhit DM Gyanendra Singh questioned Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Amit Kumar Singh in June about the "stark absence of furniture in classrooms". On learning that "lack of govt funding" was the reason, the DM directed the administration to use village panchayat development funds to start procuring furniture. "With UP govt striving to improve the educational system in primary schools across the state, lack of furniture in classrooms was severely hindering the cause. Availability of desks and chairs will certainly help in supporting the govt's mission and act as a big boost for children's education and future," said the DM. The administration, which circumvented the funding issue by using village panchayat development funds to fill up classrooms, then assigned the duty of its management to the panchayat raj department. "Till now, 925 primary schools have received chairs and desks for students. The remaining schools will get them within a week. Furniture will cost around Rs 1 lakh per school," the BSA added. According to the BSA, Pilibhit district has as many as 95,532 students in govt primary schools and 66,772 students in 284 upper primary schools.

9 teacher aspirants detained during protest demanding STET before TRE-4
1 2 3 4 Patna: Eleven days after a similar protest failed to yield any result, the teacher aspirants held another demonstration on Monday, demanding Secondary Teacher Eligibility Test (STET) before the fourth phase of Teacher Recruitment Exam (TRE-4). As it turned chaotic, police allegedly had to use mild force and detain nine demonstrators. The aspirants, many BEd degree-holders who had been waiting for the exam for months, started their procession from Patna College campus for the CM's residence, but their progress was halted by police and administration at Dak Bungalow crossing. When the protestors attempted to breach barricades, they were met with a forceful response from the police, who didn't deploy water cannons, despite being present at the spot. Carrying banners with slogans like "No STET, no vote" and "STET before TRE-4", the demonstrators voiced their frustration, alleging that the govt had failed to honour its promise to conduct the exam twice a year. "The govt has cheated us. Many of us have completed BEd degrees, and are awaiting the opportunity to sit for the exam, which has not been held since Nov 2023," Chandan Kumar, an aspirant said. Aman Kumar, another teacher aspirant, clarified the demands: "We are not demanding jobs, but just to conduct the STET before TRE-4. If the exam is not held before TRE-4, how will we apply for it," he said. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, a three-member delegation of protesters was sent to the secretariat to meet with a representative of the CM. The delegation was reportedly assured that a response would be provided within one to two days, though the protesters said that they have been given similar unfulfilled assurances in the past. According to Krishna Murari Prasad, subdivisional police officer (law and order)-I, they were compelled to disperse the crowd after the delegation was sent, as the remaining protesters continued to create disturbance. "They were still protesting, causing chaos at the Dak Bungalow crossing. We asked them to leave but they resisted, so we had to disperse them," he said. This protest follows a similar demonstration that took place on Aug 7. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Akkulam Lake rejuvenation project scaled down as cost soars to Rs 160 crore
T'puram: The much-awaited Akkulam Lake rejuvenation project in the capital has hit yet another roadblock with the state govt deciding to scale down its scope due to massive cost escalation, from the initial ₹96 crore to around ₹160 crore. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The decision was taken recently at a high-level meeting chaired by chief minister's principal secretary K M Abraham. Sources said the project would now be retendered with the original cost estimate of ₹96 crore, necessitating significant revisions to the project components. Tendered two years ago, the project aims to transform the deteriorating Akkulam Lake and its surroundings into a premier eco-tourism destination. Public sector enterprise WAPCOS Ltd was appointed as the implementing agency. However, the implementation faced delays due to disagreements within the tourism department, particularly over the selection of a subcontractor by the main contractor, Sri Avantika Contractors, which allegedly had no prior experience in water quality management. A senior official close to the project told TOI: "The operation and maintenance components alone accounted for ₹38 crore, which was not anticipated in the initial proposal. Now, based on the principal secretary's instructions, we are working on scaling down the scope of the project to fit within the ₹96-crore ceiling." Meanwhile, a Sri Avantika Contractors representative blamed the govt's indecision for the project's cost overrun. "We submitted the project at ₹96 crore, but the delay caused by the tourism department's reluctance to allow subcontracting severely disrupted the timeline. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This naturally led to increased costs," he said. The latest decision has raised concerns that the project might face even more delays as new bidders may be unwilling to execute a scaled-down version of the project at the original cost. Industry experts say that inflation and increased material and labour costs over the last two years make it challenging for any firm to undertake the project without revisions to budget allocation. The Akkulam Lake rejuvenation, once envisioned as a flagship tourism and environmental restoration project for Thiruvananthapuram, now faces an uncertain future unless the state finds a balanced approach between fiscal limitations and the ecological urgency of restoring the lake. Environmentalists have long raised concerns about the pollution levels in Akkulam Lake, which is fed by the Killi River and suffers from untreated sewage inflows. The state govt cancelled the contract awarded to Hyderabad-based Sri Avantika Contractors Ltd in May this year. An official govt order issued on May 14, 2025, cited the lack of technical expertise in lake rejuvenation on the part of Avantika and its joint venture partner firms as the reason for the cancellation. The order also revoked the Letter of Award (LOA) issued in 2022 to Avantika Contractors, noting serious deficiencies in fulfilling the technical criteria, operations and maintenance (O&M) capabilities, and documentation required for such a large-scale ecological project. The rejuvenation project, expected to take two years, includes features like an entrance plaza, food court, rain shelter, wetland park, open-air theatre, seating areas, open gym, bio-fencing, toilets and parking facilities. Additionally, approximately 26 acres of land must be acquired to restore the lake area.
