
Designs unveiled for replacement of Baltimore bridge almost a year after deadly collapse
Almost a year after the deadly collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge, Maryland officials on Tuesday unveiled their designs for its replacement, which will be taller and better protected against ship strikes.
Construction of the state's first cable-stayed bridge could be completed in 2028 and cost upwards of $1.7 billion.
With its graceful outline and delicate design, officials said the new bridge will modernize Baltimore's skyline, becoming a symbol of resilience, progress and economic growth. The design features two towers with cables radiating down to the deck.
'This is a great day for the state of Maryland,' Gov. Wes Moore said at a news conference late Tuesday morning. 'But it's not lost on me that today's triumph was born out of tragedy.'
The original Key Bridge, a 1.6-mile (2.6-kilometer) steel span at the mouth of Baltimore's harbor, took five years to construct and opened to traffic in 1977. It connected various port-oriented industrial communities around Baltimore and allowed drivers to easily bypass downtown.
The bridge was destroyed when a massive container ship lost power and slammed into one of its supporting columns. The March 26 collapse killed six construction workers who were filling potholes when the structure crumbled beneath them. Baltimore's port was closed for months after the collapse, and increased traffic congestion remains a problem for drivers across the region.
Officials quickly promised to rebuild the bridge — a longstanding Baltimore landmark and vital piece of transportation infrastructure.
Demolition of the remaining pieces will take place this spring, with construction of its replacement to follow, officials said Tuesday.
They held Tuesday's news conference at Tradepoint Atlantic, a shipping hub in the Port of Baltimore that played a major role in cleanup and recovery efforts following the collapse. The facility is revitalizing the site of a former Bethlehem Steel plant just northeast of Baltimore as maritime shipping continues to fuel the regional economy.
'Maryland is a bridge between America and the rest of the world. We get cars from Michigan out to market. We bring sugars and spices to Louisiana. We haul farm equipment from the East Coast deep into the heartland,' Moore said. 'Commerce and trade are the bedrock of our state, and we will continue to make investments that honor our tradition.'
In August, the state awarded a $73 million contract for the first phase of the rebuild to Kiewit Infrastructure, a major construction and engineering firm.
Officials said the project would advance in two phases, with the first focusing on the design work and other necessary steps before construction begins. Moore promised to 'employ many Marylanders' throughout the process.
Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the design will include the latest in pier protection technology, which has become increasingly important as ships keep getting bigger and carrying more cargo. The bridge will also be taller to provide more clearance. He said the plans were developed with the project's cost and construction timeline in mind.
'While this is a beautiful bridge, it will also be a working bridge for a working city,' Wiedefeld said.
The federal government has agreed to cover the full price tag for rebuilding. Congress recently passed a spending bill that included a funding provision for the project.
Officials have said they expect that federal taxpayers will eventually be made whole through insurance payouts and damages, but that could take a while. A sprawling civil case will ultimately determine the assignments of liability in what could become one of the most expensive maritime disasters in U.S. history.
The National Transportation Safety Board has not yet released its final report on the collapse, though officials said a loose cable in the ship's electrical switchboard likely contributed to its power issues. Federal agents boarded the cargo ship Dali amid a criminal investigation last year.

Crews were working on Thursday morning to contain and clean up a 2,000-gallon (7,570-liter) diesel fuel spill in Baltimore's harbor, according to state and city officials. More than 100 people worked through the night to make sure that the situation was under control and contained, the Maryland governor, Wes Moore, said at a news conference. Baltimore's mayor, Brandon Scott, stressed that there's no evidence to suggest that the spill was affecting drinking water in the area. A boom was deployed on the water and crews later began to skim the heating oil product off the water, the city's fire chief, James Wallace, said. They had begun to flush the storm drain system to push the product to the harbor where there were skimmers to capture it, he said. That effort will continue through most of the day on Thursday. Officials explained that the water appears red due to dye in the fuel. 'Very speedy response, solid coordination, partnership with our state and federal resources have put us into the position right now,' Wallace said. 'That's what's going to drive the remainder of the day and actually the coming days.' Officials expect the containment and cleanup efforts will disrupt traffic well into the day on Thursday, and they encouraged people to avoid the area.

About 2,000 gallons of diesel spills in Baltimore waterfront, US officials say
June 5 (Reuters) - A 2,000-gallon diesel spill that originated at a hospital facility in Baltimore, Maryland, on Wednesday tainted a waterfront in a popular tourist spot in the city, but there was no impact on drinking water in the area, officials said on Thursday. The spill originated from a Johns Hopkins Hospital facility near the marina and was initially estimated at only 100 gallons, the office of Maryland Governor Wes Moore said in a statement. The spill has been contained in the marina in Harbor East, an area roughly 100 by 250 yards, the statement added. Moore's office said that the water in the area had turned red due to dye in the diesel fuel, and that the U.S. Coast Guard was working with a contractor on cleanup efforts. "My team and I are currently onsite at Fells Point, where there's been an oil spill of unknown origins," Moore said in a post on X earlier on Wednesday, before the origin of the spill was identified. Fells Point is a historic, waterfront neighborhood in the city. Johns Hopkins Hospital was engaged in response, according to the governor's statement. The hospital did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours.

Jennings spoke on CNN's State of the Union show Sunday morning while sitting beside Democrat Representative for Michigan Debbie Dingell, whose summary of where her party is heading prompted his brutal takedown. 'Democrats have to stop being against Donald Trump and start being for something. We've got to lay out our agenda for what we're going to do,' Dingell said. Jennings (pictured) disagreed, saying the Democrats 'are for things'. 'I'll defend the Democrats,' he said. 'They are for things: illegal aliens. You're for boys in girl's sports. I mean, you are for things,' he added as Dingell repeatedly said 'no, no.' 'That's why you have such struggles right now in your party, because you're not for anything that's on the right side of any of the 80/20 issues that are driving this cultural divide in America,' Jennings continued. 'I think Wes Moore is actually a pretty talented communicator. The other person who spoke in South Carolina, Tim Walz, is a special mixture of extreme buffoonery and a mean spirit, which is a toxic brew. He is not the future of the Democratic Party. The 2024 vice presidential candidate slammed the President and told the crowd to bully Trump, bestowing him the nickname the 'cruel man,' claiming that liberals 'need to be meaner.' Walz branded Trump a 'wannabe dictator' and 'existential threat' to democracy and he urged his fellow Democrats to abandon their usual approach and get tough with Trump. It comes as a recent CNN poll indicated that liberals believe New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the person who best reflects the party's key principles. However, there wasn't a clear winner and many respondents had no opinion at all. The survey asked Democrats and Democratic-leaning Independent voters which politician best reflects the core values of the Democratic Party today. Ten percent of voters chose AOC while former Vice President Kamala Harris was a close second with nine percent of the votes. Sanders came in third with eight percent while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was placed fourth with six percent. Former President Barack Obama and Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett were tied for fifth with four percent. California Governor Gavin Newsom, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer were all tied at two percent. Another fifteen Democrats including some lawmakers and governors each received one percent of the votes, while a whopping 26 percent of respondents had no opinion. Trump allies greeted the results of the poll as good news as the progressive Democratic congresswoman has long been accused of being too far left by moderates. Conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro also shared the poll on his show, dubbing the results 'brutal' for Democrats. He claimed the New York Congresswoman is 'totally out of touch with most Americans.' The survey conducted March 6-9 included 1,206 respondents and has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
