MYSURU: An annual award has been instituted in the name of the Dasara elephant Arjuna, who was martyred during a wild elephant capture operation near Yasaluru, Hassan. The first award will be presented to a mahout, an elephant handler, and a Kavadi, an assistant elephant handler, during Gajapayana at Nagarahole Tiger Forest on August 4.
Forest minister Eshwar B. Khandre will present the award to Bhima elephant's mahout, Gunda, and Kavadi Nanjundaswamy, who successfully participated in elephant and wildlife capture operations in places like Hassan, Sakleshpur, and Kodagu, informed Eshwar Khandre.
Khandre informed that HD Kote MLA Anil Kumar C suggested establishing an annual award in Arjuna's name. Honouring this suggestion, it has been decided to present the "Arjuna Elephant" award during the annual Gajapayana, a traditional journey of tamed elephants to Mysuru city from the woods.
The award will be presented regularly in recognition of the work of mahouts and Kavadis who actively participate in operations to prevent human-wildlife conflict, capture wild animals, successfully conduct these operations, and excel in training and caring for captured elephants.
Arjuna, who was captured during the Khedda operation in Kakanakote in 1968, participated in the Dasara celebrations 22 times and carried the 750 kg golden howdah 8 times. He won the appreciation of the nation for performing a highly demanding job elegantly. The award has been established to ensure Arjuna's name remains eternal, as he sacrificed his life to save forest staff.
The Dasara elephant selection committee selected the names of the duo for the first Arjuna Award.

Crossover at Khudiram to skirt Kavi Subhash stn

1 2 Kolkata: Metro Railway will be initiating the prerequisite construction activity at Shahid Khudiram first, to create the facility for empty trains to reverse at this station itself, instead of being driven another 2km to the former terminal, Kavi Subhash, at New Garia. The Blue Line's carshed at Kavi Subhash will also be shifted to Tollygunge station so that the damaged station can be free of any kind of operations. Only then will contractors start the main demolition of platforms and tracks. Reconstruction of Kavi Subhash terminal will begin subsequently. The North-South or Blue Line's southern terminal station was shut indefinitely on Monday as widening cracks were spotted in the columns on which the Up or Dakshineswar-bound platform stands. Since then, services from Dakshineswar and Dum Dum in the north have been terminating at the elevated Shahid Khudiram at Dhalai Bridge. However, empty trains are still being driven to the erstwhile terminal station for reversing. "As long as trains continue to roll into Kavi Subhash, razing work will be slow and careful, so that the signal and telecom (ST) system, electrical cables, and the third line that carries power to the rakes are not affected," a source said. Therefore, a reversing facility will be built 90 metres beyond the platforms at Shahid Khudiram. That's the minimum space needed for an eight-coach rake to switch tracks. Points and signals will have to be installed for the rake reversal. Rakes from Noapara carshed were fed from the northern end. With the Kavi Subhash station becoming entirely dysfunctional, the stabling system here would be irrelevant. Therefore, a new stabling yard is needed to be set up at the Tollygunge or Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station. Before the Blue Line's elevated extension, this over-the-ground station served as the southern terminus and had its own stabling yard. The old system will be revived now, an official said. Since Kavi Subhash has been the interchanging station for the Blue and Orange (New Garia-Ruby) Lines as well, the Orange Line's state-of-the-art depot-cum-maintenance shed came in handy for Blue Line rakes as well. The facility will not be available for Blue Line rakes any longer. The carrier will have to depend on the Noapara maintenance depot for the upkeep of the 39 eight-car or broad-gauge rakes operating on the Blue Line. Parks, green belts cry for attention, authorities yet to act

1 2 3 Panchkula: Several parks and green belts across Panchkula are in a state of neglect, with residents raising alarms over poor maintenance and growing health risks, especially during the monsoon season. Despite repeated concerns, civic authorities have yet to take action. One of the most neglected areas is the green belt in Industrial Phase II, opposite Sector 15, which is overrun with wild grass, broken benches, and heaps of dumped horticulture waste. "Apart from cleanliness, this situation invites the danger of vector-borne diseases due to the breeding of mosquitoes and other insects. Authorities need to wake up and do the needful. Small parks have sector committees, but not big green belts. They should also have it," said SK Nayar, President, Citizens Welfare Association. In Sector 19, the condition of Maharana Pratap Public Park is equally alarming. "The grass and trees are overgrown and untrimmed, making it unsafe for children and senior citizens. Dogs often defecate in the park, and with the rainy season, mosquitoes, snakes, and insects become common. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo It's a major hygiene concern," said Priyanka Yadav, a Sector 19 resident. She added the park has become practically unusable and urged the authorities to clean and restore it urgently. Similarly, a green belt behind Gopal Sweets in Sector 20 has turned into a dump yard with stagnant water and garbage piling up at multiple points, raising the risk of infections and waterborne diseases. Residents of Sector 25 have also reported that two parks in the area are in bad shape, with damaged infrastructure and thick wild growth. They claim that repeated complaints have fallen on deaf ears. "Across Panchkula, especially after the monsoon rains, the parks are facing more damage and urgently require trimming, cleaning, and restoration," said another concerned resident. Residents of some other sectors have raised concern about parks and even wild grass growth on footpaths. While the city once prided itself on its well-maintained green spaces, the current state of affairs has left locals disappointed and frustrated. With rising health risks and diminishing public spaces, citizens are now demanding swift and sustained action from the municipal authorities.
