Crossover at Khudiram to skirt Kavi Subhash stn

Kolkata: Metro Railway will be initiating the prerequisite construction activity at Shahid Khudiram first, to create the facility for empty trains to reverse at this station itself, instead of being driven another 2km to the former terminal, Kavi Subhash, at New Garia.
The Blue Line's carshed at Kavi Subhash will also be shifted to Tollygunge station so that the damaged station can be free of any kind of operations. Only then will contractors start the main demolition of platforms and tracks. Reconstruction of Kavi Subhash terminal will begin subsequently.
The North-South or Blue Line's southern terminal station was shut indefinitely on Monday as widening cracks were spotted in the columns on which the Up or Dakshineswar-bound platform stands.
Since then, services from Dakshineswar and Dum Dum in the north have been terminating at the elevated Shahid Khudiram at Dhalai Bridge. However, empty trains are still being driven to the erstwhile terminal station for reversing.
"As long as trains continue to roll into Kavi Subhash, razing work will be slow and careful, so that the signal and telecom (ST) system, electrical cables, and the third line that carries power to the rakes are not affected," a source said.
Therefore, a reversing facility will be built 90 metres beyond the platforms at Shahid Khudiram. That's the minimum space needed for an eight-coach rake to switch tracks. Points and signals will have to be installed for the rake reversal.

All this time, at least four rakes could be stabled at the Kavi Subhash carshed, to enable Metro Railway to run the 6.50 am (first) service from the southern end. Rakes from Noapara carshed were fed from the northern end.
With the Kavi Subhash station becoming entirely dysfunctional, the stabling system here would be irrelevant. Therefore, a new stabling yard is needed to be set up at the Tollygunge or Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station.
Before the Blue Line's elevated extension, this over-the-ground station served as the southern terminus and had its own stabling yard. The old system will be revived now, an official said.
Since Kavi Subhash has been the interchanging station for the Blue and Orange (New Garia-Ruby) Lines as well, the Orange Line's state-of-the-art depot-cum-maintenance shed came in handy for Blue Line rakes as well. The facility will not be available for Blue Line rakes any longer. The carrier will have to depend on the Noapara maintenance depot for the upkeep of the 39 eight-car or broad-gauge rakes operating on the Blue Line.
