The union leaders have demanded that the state govt immediately fill the 11,000 vacant posts in various categories, approve employee promotions that have been stalled for the past six years, and clear the file currently pending with chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Additionally, they have demanded the release of pending 24 months' arrears of the 11th PRC, along with pending Dearness Allowance (DA) and clearance of gratuity and leave encashment dues to retired employees and those who died while serving. tnn

More Indian students choosing Europe for higher education
While Indian students heading to foreign universities have declined across the top three destination countries – Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom – member states of the European Union are seeing a steady rise in the number of Indians travelling to pursue higher studies. Canada witnessed a 32% drop, with permits falling from 2.78 lakh to 1.89 lakh, the United States saw a 34% decrease, with F1 visas dropping from 1.31 lakh to 86,110 between fiscal years 2023 and 2024. The UK on the other hand recorded a 26% reduction with sponsored student visas issued to Indians decreasing from 1.20 lakh to 88,732 during the same time period. This reduction has come in the backdrop of tightening immigration measures including introduction of caps on student intake and restrictions on dependent visas. On the other hand, Indian students travelling to EU member states for higher education have risen by close to 80% in the last five years. From close to 50,000 students in 2018, the number has jumped to over 90,000 in 2023-24. While 56,255 students headed to foreign universities in the EU member states in 2018-19, this number jumped to over 90,000 by 2023-24. The figures for 2019-20 and 2022-23 were 66,385 and 84,736 respectively. According to data from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), as of January 1, 2024, over 11.6 lakh Indian students were studying in higher education institutions abroad. While the top three destinations accounted for 31% of Indian students collectively, EU member states accounted for 8% – a figure that has steadily been rising. 'Europe is an attractive destination for Indian students because it offers diversity of programs and a richness of cultural experience. Already 90,000 Indian students are studying in Europe…this speaks for itself. With the EU India bilateral relations with India going full steam ahead, more opportunities for people to people contact will be created,' European Union Ambassador Herve Delphin told The Indian Express. Europe has over 4,000 higher education institutions and 17.5 million tertiary education students (including college and vocational courses). It has close to 1.35 million educators and 1.17 million researchers. EU member states also offer the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's degree (EMJMD), a scholarship awarded on a competitive basis to select students which covers tuition fee, travel costs and living allowance. Since 2004, 50,000 students have got the scholarship grant. Among those who got the grant is 23 year old Arch. 'I was in no mood to go abroad. So, I applied to get admission in PG course in India through CUET. But that was way too competitive – to a damaging extent. Bacho ka dil toot jaata hai (kids get their heart broken because of the exam). I studied from a private university in Gujarat… I decided to take a gap year,' she told The Indian Express. 'I took a gap year for the scholarship because it's so competitive and at the same time prestigious. I was elated when I found out that I got in. I'm going to Poland and Ireland for a Masters in psychology under the Global Minds programme,' she said.

NDA govt succeeded in making AP ganja-free: HM
Vijayawada: Home minister Vangalapudi Anitha announced that under the guidance of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, the home department and Eagle Task Force have significantly curbed the menace of ganja in the state. Speaking to media at the Secretariat on Monday, the minister reiterated the government's commitment to making Andhra Pradesh drug and ganja-free. To achieve this, the Chief Minister formed a subcommittee comprising the education, excise, and tribal welfare ministers and established the Eagle Task Force, headquartered in Amaravati, with regional centres in Rajahmundry and Visakhapatnam to prevent ganja cultivation and usage. CCTV cameras have been installed at vulnerable points to curb smuggling. The minister pointed out that last year, 2,114 drug peddlers were arrested, 831 cases were registered, and 293 vehicles were seized. Additionally, properties worth Rs 7.75 crore belonging to seven drug peddlers were confiscated. Under Operation Garuda, 100 joint teams conducted raids on medical shops statewide, resulting in the seizure of 150 shops for violating regulations. Anitha noted that during the previous YSRCP government, police from neighbouring states reported ganja smuggling originating from Andhra Pradesh. The situation has now improved, with ganja cultivation in the Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) districts eradicated and 31,185 alternative crop plants distributed to farmers. Awareness programmes are also being conducted in tribal areas to discourage ganja cultivation. Eagle Task Force IG Ravikrishna delivered a presentation on efforts to curb ganja cultivation and usage. He outlined rehabilitation measures for farmers transitioning away from ganja cultivation and shared plans to establish a data center to monitor and prevent drug usage. Large-scale awareness campaigns are also underway to promote a drug and ganja-free Andhra Pradesh, he said.

End Ukraine war or face 100% tariffs: Trump tells Russia to make Ukraine deal
U.S. President Donald Trump told Russia on Monday (July 14, 2025) to end its Ukraine war within 50 days or face massive new economic sanctions, as he laid out plans for new infusions of weaponry for Kyiv via NATO. Mr. Trump said he was 'very, very unhappy' with Vladimir Putin, underlining his insistence that his patience had finally snapped with the Russian leader's refusal to end the deadly conflict. 'We're going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100%,' Mr. Trump said during an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The Republican added that they would be 'secondary tariffs' that target Russia's remaining trade partners – seeking to cripple Moscow's ability to survive already sweeping Western sanctions. Russia's top trading partner last year was China, accounting for about 34%, followed distantly by India, Turkey and Belarus, according to the Russian Federal Customs Service. Mr. Trump and Mr. Rutte also unveiled a deal under which the NATO military alliance would buy billions of dollars of arms from the United States – including Patriot anti-missile batteries – and then send them to Ukraine. 'This is really big,' said Mr. Rutte, as he touted a deal aimed at easing Mr. Trump's long-held complaints that the U.S. is paying more than European and NATO allies to aid Ukraine. 'Better late than never' U.S. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, who are pushing a bipartisan bill on Russia secondary sanctions, praised Mr. Trump's 'powerful' move. 'The ultimate hammer to bring about the end of this war will be tariffs against countries, like China, India and Brazil, that prop up Mr. Putin's war machine,' they said in a statement. Mr. Trump's special envoy Keith Kellogg arrived in Kyiv on Monday (July 14, 2025) for what Mr. Zelenskyy called a 'productive meeting.' One Ukrainian soldier deployed in the war-scarred east of the country, who identified himself by his call sign Grizzly, welcomed Mr. Trump's promise of fresh air defence systems. Russian forces meanwhile said on Monday (July 14, 2025) they had captured new territory in eastern Ukraine with the seizure of one village in the Donetsk region and another in the Zaporizhzhia region.
