Prominent former Indian MP sentenced to life for raping woman after investigation sparked when hundreds of explicit videos featuring him flooded social media

A prominent former Indian politician has been sentenced to life in prison after investigations following a sex tape scandal found him guilty of raping a woman. Prajwal Revanna, 34, the grandson of former Indian Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, broke down in court as he begged for leniency on Friday - only to be handed the maximum sentence just a day later. In her testament, the victim stated she had been raped twice by Revanna - once at a farmhouse and again at his residence in Bengaluru's Basavanagudi during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2021. According to an NDTV report, Revanna had recorded the assault and threatened to release the videos if she told anyone about what he had done. 'The sexual assault video reflects Prajwal's sadistic mindset. He was a sitting MP, fully aware of the law, yet committed such acts. He is a habitual offender who recorded videos of multiple women. The maximum punishment must be imposed,' Special Public Prosecutor BN Jagadish reportedly told the court. 'A strong message must be sent that wealth and political power do not guarantee leniency. Courts must counter the public perception that influential people get away with lighter sentences while ordinary citizens face the full brunt of the law,' he added. In his final statement before the sentencing, Revanna said: 'Why did this case come out during the elections? 'When I was an MP, no complaints were lodged against me. They now say I committed multiple sexual assaults. Why didn't anyone come forward then? Why did the case surface only during the election?' Te former MP's fall from grace rocked southern India 's Karnataka state, where he hails rom a dynasty deeply connected to the ruling elite. Revanna's Janata Dal (Secular) party is currently allied with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP. The scandal first exploded in 2023, when hundreds of explicit videos allegedly featuring Revanna began circulating online, sparking national outrage. He fled from India to Germany in April 2024 on a diplomatic passport, refusing to comment on the footage - which his office claimed to had been doctored. But on May 31, after boarding a flight to Bengaluru from Frankfurt Main airport, he was intercepted and arrested by the all-women Special Investigation Team and remanded to custody. The following month, the Special Court for MPs and MLAs denied bail to Revanna, whose case was then handed to Karnataka High Court in July, where his bail plea was once again rejected. On November 2, Revanna's DNA was found on the undergarments of the rape victim, and nine days later, the Supreme Court again denied the former MP bail. Despite maintaining his innocence, Revanna was convicted of raping the unnamed woman, and faces two additional rape cases and one sexual harassment case still pending in court. It is highly unusual for someone with such political influence to face such a severe punishment in India, where powerful figures often evade justice. Revanna can appeal against the sentence.

Four dead in as many days at seaside beauty spot as woman's body is found beneath cliffs after couple and another lady were discovered

A fourth person has been found dead beneath the cliffs near Whitby in just a matter of days. Emergency services were alerted to the discovery of a body at Sandsend near Whitby Abbey just after 11am yesterday - where three others also died this week. Police later discovered the woman's body below the cliffs behind the main car park at Sandsend. Teams from the ambulance, police, coastguard, lifeboat and fire service all attended the scene. The woman's body was recovered at 12.55pm and the location was reopened to the public a few hours later following extensive enquiries. The woman's death follows the double tragedy of a man and woman - believed to be in their 40s - who plunged to their deaths from 200ft cliffs behind Whitby Abbey on Wednesday evening. The couple were seen heading towards the cliffs on a path on the North Yorkshire coast. Their bodies were recovered from the rocks below the 180ft cliffs on Wednesday evening following the apparent suicide pact. A day later on Thursday, a woman in her 60s was found dead by the cliffs near Whitby Pavilion. Police, ambulance, coastguard, mountain rescue and lifeboat teams were called after reports of the woman's death, which is believed to have involved a fall from the cliff. Due to the rocky location and high tide, mountain rescue assisted in recovering the woman's body to the lifeboat before being taken to the lifeboat house. North Yorkshire Police are not linking the third death, which is not believed to be suspicious, to the alleged double suicide, which the force continue to investigate. The area beside the historic 7th-century Abbey, which sits on the clifftop over the historic fishing port of Whitby, has been busy with people setting up for a vintage steam engine rally. North Yorkshire Police said of the latest tragedy that the woman's death is not being treated as suspicious. The force said in a statement: 'It has been confirmed that the woman is aged in her 50s and from the local area. 'Officers are supporting the woman's family at this difficult time. 'The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.' Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information that could assist officers have been urged to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 12250143585. The force underlined: 'There are no connections between this sudden death, the sudden deaths of a man and woman below Whitby Abbey on Wednesday 30 July or the woman below Whitby Abbey on Thursday 31 July.'
