It is the responsibility of mothers to provide society with the best citizens, K.V.S.M. Sandhyadevi, Principal of Andhra Medical College, said at the Mother's Day programme held, at the Nature Cure Hospital on the Beach Road here on Sunday.
The celebrations were jointly organised by Sri Gayatri Welfare Cultural Youth Academy, Rupakula Vishalakshi Charitable Trust and Prakriti Chikitsalayam.
Dr. Sandhyadevi and 97-year-old Chilukuri Shantamma, a retired professor of Andhra University, who attended as guests, paid floral tributes to a portrait of freedom fighter Rupakula Vishalakshi.
Dr. Sandhyadevi described mothers as the guiding lights of society, and it is their responsibility to shape children into ideal citizens. She praised Prof. Shantamma as an embodiment of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, and mentioned that she continues to mentor students even today. Dr. Sandhyadevi said that under Prof. Shantamma's guidance, 20 students received doctorate degrees, and that she is a renowned physicist, a karma yogi, a philanthropist, and a spiritually-inclined mother figure.
Prof. Shantamma called upon the youth to excel in both academics and sports and bring glory to the nation.
Dr. S. Lakshminarayana, S. Srilakshmi, AVN College Vice Principal Singaraju Krishnakumari and BJP leaders Rupakula Ravikumar were present.

Persons with disabilities receive assistive devices in Tiruchi
The Department for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons (DWDAP), in collaboration with Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), presented assistive devices to 217 persons with disabilities from Thuraiyur, Tiruchi, Tiruverumbur, Manachanallur, and Lalgudi at the Tiruchi Collectorate on Thursday. According to an official note, the beneficiaries were selected through social reinforcement meetings held by DWDAP, and received 461 assistive devices worth ₹21.73 lakh. District Collector M. Pradeep Kumar and Durai Vaiko, MP, distributed the devices on Thursday. Among the devices were motorised and ordinary tricycles, foldable wheelchairs, axilla and elbow crutches, assistance to daily living (ADL) kits for leprosy patients, mobile phones, and hearing aids. ALIMCO, which functions under the auspices of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, and DWDAP had earlier presented assistive devices to 597 beneficiaries. As part of Special Mother's Day celebrations, the Collector felicitated 50 mothers who have worked hard to take care of their children with disability, in the presence of R. Ravichandran, District Differently Abled Welfare Officer, Tiruchi, and senior officials.

Mother-Child statue unveiled at Lawley Road junction in Coimbatore city
In observance of Mother's Day, a statue depicting a mother and child, symbolising the bond of motherhood, was unveiled at the roundabout at Lawley Road junction in Coimbatore city on Wednesday. The statue was erected by Rao Hospital. The unveiling ceremony was attended by District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran, City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar, and representatives of Rao Hospital. Dr. S.R. Rao, Chairman of Rao Hospital, extended the hospital's appreciation to the Corporation Commissioner, District Collector, and the Highways Department for granting the necessary permissions to install the statue. 'The statue at Thaisai symbolises the enduring and universal bond between a mother and her child. This bond is central to the care we provide at Rao Hospital. We are honoured to contribute to the Coimbatore Smart City initiative and to serve the community,' stated Dr. Asha Rao, Managing Director, Rao Hospital.
