‘Know your numbers' to promote women's wellness
Visakhapatnam: As part of the national initiative and as a prelude to the 'Waves 2025-FOGSI presidential conference', a health initiative under the banner 'know your numbers' (KYN) was hosted in Visakhapatnam on Friday. Organised by the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI), LUM is a national health endeavour that gathers vital health data such as weight, blood pressure, blood sugar level, and hemoglobin level from women across India. By focusing on these key health indicators, the project aims to foster a proactive health management culture among women. In connection with 'WAVES 2025,' a KYN camp was inaugurated at Andhra Medical College. Speaking on the occasion, organising chairperson of the conference Dr. T Radha stressed on how important the KYN programme is for every woman and conveyed her gratitude to the defence forces in these challenging times. Organising secretary Dr MNV Pallavi spoke about how these numbers are not just statistics but are indicators of women's wellbeing. 'By identifying health issues early, we can prevent complications, promote timely care, and help women lead longer, healthier life,' she stressed. Vice president, FOGSI Dr Palaniappan spoke about how a woman can take care of her health and how many path breaking initiatives were taken up by the FOGSI to promote women's health. President of the Navy Welfare and Wellness Association (NWWA) Sandhya Rao Pendharkar, who participated as chief guest, emphasised the need for women to put their health above everything. Medical students who participated in the event had an opportunity to interact with experts. Principal of Andhra Medical College Dr KVSM Sandhya Devi talked about health challenges and how they need to be tackled. Superintendent of KGH Dr P Sivanand, among others, spoke. About 200-250 students were screened at the programme and their vital health data collected.

It is the responsibility of mothers to provide society with the best citizens, K.V.S.M. Sandhyadevi, Principal of Andhra Medical College, said at the Mother's Day programme held, at the Nature Cure Hospital on the Beach Road here on Sunday. The celebrations were jointly organised by Sri Gayatri Welfare Cultural Youth Academy, Rupakula Vishalakshi Charitable Trust and Prakriti Chikitsalayam. Dr. Sandhyadevi and 97-year-old Chilukuri Shantamma, a retired professor of Andhra University, who attended as guests, paid floral tributes to a portrait of freedom fighter Rupakula Vishalakshi. Dr. Sandhyadevi described mothers as the guiding lights of society, and it is their responsibility to shape children into ideal citizens. She praised Prof. Shantamma as an embodiment of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, and mentioned that she continues to mentor students even today. Dr. Sandhyadevi said that under Prof. Shantamma's guidance, 20 students received doctorate degrees, and that she is a renowned physicist, a karma yogi, a philanthropist, and a spiritually-inclined mother figure. Prof. Shantamma called upon the youth to excel in both academics and sports and bring glory to the nation. Dr. S. Lakshminarayana, S. Srilakshmi, AVN College Vice Principal Singaraju Krishnakumari and BJP leaders Rupakula Ravikumar were present.

Visakhapatnam is key to realise Vision 2047: Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu
VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam, which has the highest per capita income in the State, will serve as a key driver in achieving the goals of the Swarna Andhra Vision 2047, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu said. While addressing the gathering as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the Centenary Building of Andhra Medical College (AMC), Naidu affirmed that Visakhapatnam would undergo significant transformations within the next two to three years, noting that projects such as the Bhogapuram airport are nearing completion, and the city's metro project is progressing steadily. 'Visakhapatnam is steadily evolving into the financial capital and knowledge hub of Andhra Pradesh,' Naidu said. He emphasised that the city's development, supported by major projects and collaborations, would strengthen its position in the State's economy. Earlier, he inaugurated the newly constructed Centenary Building, constructed at a cost of Rs 50 crore, along with the Ambedkar Auditorium, Digital Library, and Research Centres. Referring to the contributions made towards the Centenary Building, Naidu said, 'The remarkable Centenary Building stands as a symbol of dedication towards the motherland. I congratulate Andhra Medical College and the 1,000 donors who supported this initiative.' He added that similar alumni-driven efforts would soon be expanded to medical colleges in Guntur, Kakinada, Kurnool, and Vijayawada. On the occasion, the Chief Minister also outlined plans to develop King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam on par with AIIMS to meet future healthcare needs. 'Orders have already been issued to the Principal Secretary of the Health Department. Work will begin soon,' he said, noting that the new facilities would not only benefit medical students but also enhance the overall healthcare infrastructure. 'Visakhapatnam has a promising future. With initiatives underway in collaboration with companies like Google and Tata, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence, Visakhapatnam is poised to become a Centre of Excellence and a peaceful, desirable place to live,' he emphasised. Stressing the need to address economic inequalities, the Chief Minister spoke about implementing the P-4 strategy aimed at creating wealth and opportunities for all sections of society. He stated, 'If we follow the Viksit Bharat vision sincerely, by 2047, Telugu people can become the number one community globally.' He added that India, currently the fifth-largest economy, is on course to become the third-largest by 2030, with rapid growth expected from 2028 onwards. Recalling his earlier efforts to promote the IT sector, he pointed out that measures like providing 33% reservations for women in education and employment had resulted in women excelling across various fields. Naidu said innovations using data lakes, geo-tagging, artificial intelligence, and real-time data would help address major health challenges.

KGH will be developed into a Centre of Excellence on the lines of AIIMS-Delhi: CM Naidu
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said on Saturday (April 26, 2025) that the King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam would be developed into a Centre of Excellence, on the lines of AIIMS, Delhi. Speaking at the inauguration of the 'Centenary Alumni Building' of Andhra Medical College (AMC), Mr. Naidu said KGH, which had been serving patients for over a century, was a symbol of pride for Andhra Pradesh. He directed the Health Department to prepare a comprehensive action plan to ensure the hospital continued to thrive for the next 100 years. Also read: Unique Tribal Cell at KGH serves people from agency areas across region Mr. Naidu said the newly inaugurated Centenary Alumni Building, constructed at a cost of ₹50 crore by the AMC alumni, marked a significant milestone in the college's glorious history. He noted that AMC was the seventh oldest medical college in India, established in 1923 during the British rule, and was the first medical college in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh. The college had produced a number of stalwarts, he said. Lauding the efforts of the alumni, Mr. Naidu recalled that they initially raised ₹3 crore in 2023 after receiving 1.4 acres of land. Over time, the contributions grew to ₹50 crore, gradually helping in the completion of state-of-the-art facility for the students. He appreciated the alumni's dedication and vision, calling them an inspiration. He also announced that with an additional ₹20 crore, a biomedical research laboratory would soon be established at AMC to further strengthen research capabilities. The Chief Minister also acknowledged similar efforts by the alumni of Guntur Medical College and others who were contributing to the development of their alma mater. Emphasising the importance of Information Technology in education and career development, Mr. Naidu encouraged students to embrace digital tools and innovation. Vizag poised for growth Mr. Naidu also reiterated that Visakhapatnam was poised for transformative growth over the next two to five years. Key infrastructure and industrial projects, including an international airport, a metro rail project, and major investments from TCS, Cognizant, and Google, were set to drive the progress, he said, and added that the combined regions of Anakapalli and Visakhapatnam might emerge as the largest steel-producing hub, powered by the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and the upcoming ArcelorMittal Steel Plant. Health Minister Y. Satya Kumar noted that the State Government had been giving top priority to the health sector. Alumni of AMC and in-charge Minister of Visakhapatnam district Dola Sree Bala Veerajaneya Swamy urged the Chief Minister to take steps to increase the PG seats in AMC. Principal of Andhra Medical College K.V.S.M. Sandhya Devi recalled the history of AMC and also thanked the alumnus for their contribution marking the centenary milestone. MP M.
