Maema braces for tough tie against Niger as Bafana push for a quarterfinal spot in Chan

TimesLIVEa day ago
Bafana Bafana cannot be ahead of themselves and think they are favourites in Group C to qualify for the quarterfinals in the African Nations Championships (Chan) under way in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
The team's skipper Neo Maema told TimesLIVE from Kampala, Uganda, on Wednesday that Bafana need to win their third group match against Niger at Mandela National Stadium at 7pm on Friday to be in a good position to secure their place in the last eight.
Other teams that look good to go with Bafana to the last eight are hosts Uganda, who are on top of the group with six points after two games. Algeria cannot be ruled out as they are level on four points with Molefi Ntseki's team after two games.
Only the two top teams progress to the knockout rounds in the four groups in the tournament.
Bafana have done well since they arrived in Uganda after opening their campaign with a credible 1-1 draw against Algeria before winning 2-1 in their second match against Guinea.
'There are no guarantees for now that we'll be in the next round,' warned Maema, who may be loaned by Mamelodi Sundowns to Tanzania's Simba SC after this tournament.

MTN8 semi-final: Orlando Pirates vs Mamelodi Sundowns

Orlando Stadium will be abuzz on Saturday, 16 August as Orlando Pirates welcome rivals Mamelodi Sundowns for the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final tie. A sell-out crowd is expected at the iconic venue for what is undoubtedly the season's biggest fixture thus far, with two of the country's biggest clubs going head-to-head in what promises to be another exciting cup clash. The two Gauteng giants meet in the last four for the third time in the MTN8 era, with the Buccaneers looking to go past one of their biggest foes to keep their hopes of an unprecedented fourth consecutive title alive. It's an equally important fixture for the visitors, who are looking to end Orlando Pirates' lengthy reign in the competition. Mamelodi Sundowns visit Soweto fresh off registering their first three-point haul in the league this season, courtesy of a 2-0 victory over AmaZulu at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday night. Their previous Betway Premiership outing yielded a single point as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a stubborn Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium the weekend prior. The match in Gqeberha remains their only away fixture so far this season, with the other two taking place in more familiar territory. They were in Tshwane for their MTN8 quarter-final clash against Richards Bay, where they netted four goals without conceding to open their campaign with a comfortable win in a match played at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Ahead of their trip to Orlando, the Tshwane giants have confirmed a couple of permanent exits with ex-Buccaneer Thembinkosi Lorch leaving the club along with midfielder Neo Maema. All focus will now be on Saturday's fixture as they aim to place themselves on the driving seat ahead of the deciding leg, which will be taking place in their own backyard. The Buccaneers got past Polokwane City in the opening round, beating them 2-0 at Orlando Stadium to secure a spot in the semis. The high of that season opener was soon followed by a difficult week in the Betway Premiership, where they are yet to register a point. This comes after a 1-0 defeat at home to Sekhukhune on the first match day plus a disappointing midweek outing away from home, where they lost 2-1 to Marumo Gallants at Dr Molemela Stadium. A break from league football could be a welcome change for the Soweto giants, who are unbeaten in their eight most recent cup fixtures. They head into the clash with an injury worry over Nkosinathi Sibisi, who missed the trip to Bloemfontein with vice-captain Mbekezeli Mbokazi taking over the armband. Defender Olisa Ndah also remains sidelined alongside veteran midfielder Makhehleni Makhaula, with both players yet to feature this season. There are options aplenty for coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, however, as Orlando Pirates look to get back to winning ways on their return to a competition they have dominated in recent years. Orlando Pirates head into the fixture looking to not only draw first blood in the tie, but to also uphold a proud record against Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8. They have not lost to their rivals from Tshwane in the competition's current format, which consists of two-legged semi-finals. They have competed twice in the last four, with the Buccaneers edging past the Brazilians on both occasions, courtesy of a 4-3 aggregate score in the 2011/12 edition and a 3-0 win en route to lifting the 2022/23 title. Their other clash during this period was in the final held at Moses Mabhida Stadium in October 2023, where the Soweto giants lifted the second of three consecutive trophies with victory on penalties following a goalless draw. Mamelodi Sundowns' last win over OrlandoPirates in top-eight competition came in 2007, when an early strike from Brent Carelse handed them a tight 1-0 win in the final. Kick-off is at 15:00 with the match broadcast live on SuperSport PSL and SABC 1. Tickets are sold out . Bafana Chan coach Ntseki expecting tough battle against Niger in crucial group clash

South Africa coach Molefi Ntseki says they learnt valuable lessons from their hard fought win over Guinea earlier in the week to take to their African Nations Championship [Chan] group clash against Niger at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on Friday night. Bafana go into the match sitting third in the Group C with four points from two matches, and three more points will help them to remain in control of their destiny as the knockout stages approaches. 'I think the lessons learned from that game [against Guinea], which we view as positives, include the strong mentality of our players and their high level of concentration. 'This is despite the fact that they were under siege for the better part of the match,' he said. 'We stuck to our discipline and game plan and every member of the team had to dig deep to make sure the result ended in our favour. The most important thing was the technical discipline when we were out of possession. 'They carried out their technical discipline for almost 60 minutes during the game. There were turnovers and transitions for and against in between. We managed to hold onto the ball for longer periods, we managed to create goal scoring opportunities and we managed to score the two goals. 'In terms of not conceding towards the end of the game when the pressure was mounting on us, I think it was a very good lesson and also a plus for our players to show we can play under pressure, we canl grind out the results despite the fact that the opponents were coming at us.' Defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele said they won't underestimate Niger. 'We never underestimate anybody. We treat each game with respect and approach it with a positive mindset. One of the strongest components we have in our team is we're mentally very strong. 'We don't look at the name of the country. Whoever we play against, we always try and give our best because we know we're representing our country,' he said. 'Whether we play Niger, Sudan or Nigeria, we can never walk onto a football pitch and think we have won the game. We go out there every day to suffer, to protect the badge and to fight for our country. 'In this team, there's never a moment where we look at the country and say it's a small country because they haven't won a game, and then we approach it with a negative mindset. 'We always focus and play to win. Whether it's Uganda, Niger, Guinea or Algeria, we go in with the same mentality.'

Sundowns confirm Lorch and Maema departures

'The Yellow Nation bids farewell to Neo Maema. We wish you success in the next step of your career,' Sundowns posted. Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the departures of Thembinkosi Lorch and Neo Maema as the squad overhaul at Chloorkop gets underway. Both players had fallen out of favour at the club, with their futures uncertain even before the FIFA Club World Cup. Head coach Miguel Cardoso has made it clear he intends to trim his squad for the 2025/26 season, despite the club being set to compete in multiple competitions. Lorch is reportedly poised for a return to Wydad Casablanca in Morocco, where he spent the second half of last season on loan.
