Finally a romcom that admits earning less than your partner can be a passion killer
Lucy (Johnson) works for a matchmaking agency, and we find out that her salary is $80,000 (£59,000). That's a lot less than most of her male clients, and some of her female ones. But it's also a lot more than her ex-boyfriend John (Chris Evans) makes as a 'cater waiter', paying the bills between off-off-Broadway acting gigs. At 37, he's living in a grimy flatshare with drop-outs, and in danger of never making it at all.
Money ruined their relationship the first time around, because John never had enough of it. Years later, Lucy starts dating a single, loaded businessman called Harry (Pedro Pascal), having successfully matched his brother with a bride.
Harry is what's known in Lucy's trade as a 'unicorn' – a perfect, rich, charming, bafflingly uncoupled specimen with great hair who is not even under 6ft tall. We get that love comes hard to him, but romance all too easily. Lucy is built to notice his smooth way of picking up the cheque in chi-chi restaurants, and wonders if he's husband material, while John – more skint than ever – pines for her on the sidelines.
The writer-director, Celine Song, broke hearts with another love triangle, in her feted debut Past Lives. This won't repeat the same trick, and doesn't intend to. After all, we're spending a lot of time with people referring to each other's 'tangible assets'. More than that, though, a rooting interest is curiously tough to find.
It's surprising that the performances from this hyped trio don't supply one. All are fine; all have been better. Johnson renders Lucy as such a cool-headed pragmatist, we're unsure if she's capable of love. Many Lucys wouldn't think twice about the offer Harry is tendering. So why would she?
The ubiquitous, ever-suave Pascal and a committed Evans will delight their established fans. (The Captain America star is arguably best in show here.) Still, it's a snag that the men they're playing are so sketchy, lacking quirks beyond their respective wealth and poverty. As a romcom, the film's too much like a scientific field study to give us that heady rush of watching two people realise they're soulmates.
It has been dubbed 'broke boy propaganda', but that's too rude. For all the plot's strain, at least Song has packed her film with crisp insights about the dating economy and our unrealistic standards – nowhere more cut-throat than in New York, surely. On height: 'Six inches can double a man's value in the market.' On a client's unrealistic expectations: 'Audrey, I don't know if there's a cat-hating, Christian, conservative lesbian in most parts of New York who wants to date a closeted 49-year-old with three children…'
Materialists may not persuade us that it has made any good matches at all – which is undeniably a flaw. But it's sharp and interesting for daring to admit what commodities dating apps have made of us all.

Ben Affleck takes on dad duty with children Fin and Samuel as they grab lunch in Santa Monica
Ben Affleck embraced dad duty as he spent quality time with two of his children as they enjoyed lunch together in Santa Monica on Friday. The 53-year-old Oscar winner - whose ex Jennifer Lopez recently posed up a storm for a sultry snap - was joined by Fin, 16, and Samuel, 13, to grab a bite to eat at a local restaurant. The actor shares the two teens as well as daughter Violet, 19, with ex-wife Jennifer Garner - whom he was married to from 2005 until their divorce in 2018. Affleck kept it casual wearing a white button up as well as a pair of khaki pants and comfy sneakers. The trio also appeared to stop by a bakery called Huckleberry in the same area, with the Hollywood star carrying a paper bag from the eatery. He was seen strolling closely next to Fin and Samuel as they began to head to their next destination. Affleck has been spending time with his kids before school starts and was also spotted on a father-son outing with Samuel last month in July. At the time, the pair visited a mall with the actor's German Shepherd also tagging along for the daytime excursion. The same month, the Good Will Hunting actor played the doting family man as he joined ex Jennifer Garner and their kids at a baseball game in Boston. He attended a Red Sox match as he traveled to the state of Massachusetts where he grew up and sat next to Garner as well as Fin and Samuel at Fenway Park. Affleck was born in California, but relocated with his family to Massachusetts where they eventually settled in the city of Cambridge - which is just north west of the city of Boston. Despite their split, both Affleck and Garner have maintained a positive relationship while raising their three children. Earlier in March, the star also made loving remarks towards Garner during an interview with GQ. He reflected on his divorce from Jennifer Lopez as well as his bond with Garner following their own split. 'I'm really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner, the kids' mom, who's wonderful and great and we work together well,' Affleck told the outlet. The same month, the Good Will Hunting actor played the doting family man as he joined ex Jennifer Garner and their kids at a baseball game in Boston (seen above) However, Garner continues to move on with her romance with John Miller and it was reported in April that he is 'basically living' with the actress, a source told Us Weekly. Earlier this month, the 13 Going On 30 actress was seen sporting a glittering band on her ring finger - sparking speculation about her relationship status with Miller. Ben also settled his divorce from Jennifer Lopez in January - after she had filed in August 2024 on their second wedding anniversary. But the former couple have been facing struggles when it came to selling their $68 million Beverly Hills mansion. The pair initially purchased the property in cash for $60.8 million in May 2023, and listed the sprawling estate in July of last year. Back in April, sources told TMZ that Affleck was eager to lower the price of the house while Lopez was not ready to do so - despite there not being much interest in the abode. 'Jennifer thinks they can get more money for the home, so she wants to keep the price as is. But the real estate market is not there and it's not selling,' one insider told Us Weekly. In May, it was revealed that the two stars slashed the price on the mansion - which was dropped by $8 million. Despite cutting the price, Affleck and Lopez made the decision to completely take the home off the market last month in July. 'While they've been hoping to sell the property, they've also been hesitant to take a big loss,' a source told People at the time. 'They lowered the price to get more interest and when this didn't happen, they were advised to take it off the market. It was a business decision that they made together.' The insider further expressed, 'It's a rough sellers market and especially for that price point. Taking it off the market until it's more of a seller friendly climate, seems like the smartest decision.' Lopez has also been filtering through a busy summer and recently concluded her Up All Night tour earlier this month on August 12 in Sardinia, Italy. She will take to the stage again later this year as she is set to return to Las Vegas for an upcoming residency also called Up All Night Live. The singer will perform at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on select dates beginning from December 30 through March of next year. Lopez has also taken on a leading role in the upcoming musical drama film Kiss Of The Spider Woman - which was produced by her ex Affleck and also Matt Damon. The mom-of-two took portrays the character of Ingrid Luna/Aurora/The Spider Woman in the project, which was directed by Bill Condon. The movie is an adaptation of the 1976 novel of the same name written by Manuel Puig - and also stars Diego Luna and Tonatiuh. Kiss Of The Spider Woman premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in January and will officially hit theaters later this year on October 10.

Stephen A. Smith reveals his true thoughts on LeBron James in wake of ugly public feud
Stephen A. Smith insists his relationship with LeBron James has deteriorated to the point that he would be happy never to speak to the NBA legend again. Back in March, cameras caught James and the ESPN personality in a heated confrontation during the Los Angeles Lakers' matchup against Smith's beloved New York Knicks. Smith later revealed that James had taken issue with remarks he made about his son, Bronny. They then continued their war of words, with the ESPN star accusing the Lakers star of being a 'liar' and a 'bully'. He even claimed: 'Had that man put his hands on me, I would have immediately swung on him' LeBron, meanwhile, went on The Pat McAfee Show, and mocked Smith for repeatedly discussing their feud. 'He is on a Taylor Swift tour run right now,' James joked. Now, nearly six months on, Smith insists he and James have 'no relationship'. 'He doesn't like me, and I don't like him... if I never, ever speak to him again in life, that will be OK. And I'm good with it,' Smith said Friday on the Gil's Arena livestream. 'There's nobody that can mediate.' He continued: 'All I would say is people don't know the things that have happened behind the scenes... things that have been said, who they've been said to. The kind of things that have been engaged in in an effort to hurt me, along with contemporaries and others.' Smith insisted there is 'a lot of s***' he doesn't say and that 'there's a reason that I feel the way that I do.' 'And the last straw was him approaching me and turning the Bronny thing into something about me attacking somebody's family, when it was him I was talking about. Not Bronny,' the ESPN star continued. The analyst has always maintained that the four-time NBA champion misconstrued his comments about his son. 'And then to go on The Pat McAfee Show, which comes directly on after my show, on the channel that I work on. To insult me. Now, people can get into all kind of components that go into it and all that other stuff. I have nothing to say,' continued Smith, who suggested he would now only discuss James when he has to. 'I'm never going to denigrate any employer, any partner, or myself by getting into anything excessively, unnecessarily, when it comes to him or anybody else,' the ESPN star explained. 'I'm going to do my job. I'm going to cover the game of basketball.'
