Dillian Whyte confident of pulling off surprise against Moses Itauma
Whyte and Itauma are due to fight in Riyadh on 16 August. Itauma, aged 20, little more than half the age of the 37-year-old Whyte, has racked up a flawless 12-0 record in his professional career that has spanned just over two years.
Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, which owns Riyadh Season, has said he would like to make Itauma face Usyk, the undisputed world heavyweight champion, next. Many pundits and ex-professionals say Itauma will be the next man to rule over the heavyweight division, and see the Whyte fight as a stepping stone.
Whyte admitted there was a lot of excitement around Itauma, but added: 'We've seen it time and time again where these guys are built up, they're knocking everybody out, they're prospects and stuff. We have to see what happens.
'Sometimes these guys get rushed, or sometimes they get blown out of proportion and then things go wrong. It's heavyweight boxing. Heavyweight boxing … it's unpredictable. I've always taken the most dangerous fight and the hardest fight there is.'
Whyte denied he was fazed by the speculation about the fight. 'I don't feel disrespected. In life, everybody's got an opinion. Everybody's going to say something. He's been in the limelight, he's the new man, he's shining, he's knocking everyone out … there's excitement about him.
'People's memories are short in boxing. You remember a few years ago when David Haye fought Carl Thompson, Carl Thompson was just a danger man that was in the wilderness. No one cared about Carl Thompson. David Haye was blowing everyone away, smashing everyone's heads in. And then, look, Carl Thompson showed up and got the job done.'
Whyte was knocked out by Tyson Fury at Wembley in April 2022 after being the WBC number one contender for more than four years. A rematch with Anthony Joshua was cancelled in August 2023 after an adverse finding in one of Whyte's drugs tests.
After 15 months out of the ring he won a contentious decision victory over Jermaine Franklin in March 2024. He fought a further two times in 2024 against Christian Hammer and Ebenezer Tetteh, respectively, two fights in which Whyte did not impress, showing levels that were far off the heights and skill level he had shown in victories such as the one against current WBO mandatory challenger, Joseph Parker.

A win for Whyte would revive his career and could potentially lead to a rematch with Anthony Joshua or Derek Chisora; the opportunities are endless. Otherwise retirement may loom.
Whyte was in a reflective mood when he met reporters, discussing his tough childhood in Brixton, south London. 'Sometimes I had no guardians or no one to take care of me. So I was out in the street surviving, stealing and robbing food and stuff to get by, eating from trash cans, doing stuff like that. You know, working as a kid, I remember selling Fanta bottles, the glass bottles to make money, selling fruits, farming, doing stuff. So, I've been suffering.
'All I've done in my life is fight and struggle, fight and struggle, fight and struggle, fight and struggle, fight and struggle. So it's what I know how to do. I've had to learn to be a better human being.'
He added: 'But fighting … and being amongst animals, are the two things that I know to do best.'

How will the heavyweight division look at the end of 2026?
If 2025 is going to be remembered for anything, it may be that it was the last burst of sunlight for a golden age of the heavyweight division. Oleksandr Usyk reminded the world with some brutality a few weeks ago by stopping Daniel Dubois again to prove that he is the leading heavyweight of his generation. But Usyk is 38 years old and said before that fight that he was looking at only two more bouts to finish off his career. The Ukrainian fighter will likely look then to retire within the next year if he sticks to this plan. And while he has led the division and been its north star in recent years, it is equally likely that he will lead the exodus of the division's largest names – former champions and contenders – over the next year to eighteen months. Like Usyk, the top level of the division is ageing out. Tyson Fury, seemingly on another comeback trail, is 36. Anthony Joshua is 35. Dillian Whyte, who faces Moses Itauma later this month, is 37. Derek Chisora, seemingly forever circling the drain, is 41. Kubrat Pulev, who seems to be aping the same motion, is 44. Zhilei Zhang is 42. Joe Joyce is 39. Most of them are approaching the age of retirement from the ring. Some of them – those in their 40s – have already gone beyond that. All this implies a great shift in the landscape of the big men within that year-to-eighteen-month timeframe. Kingdoms are defined by their kings, and Oleksandr Usyk is, by his own admission, coming to the end of his reign. The question is what his next steps will be. According to the World Boxing Organization (WBO), Usyk is mandated to face New Zealand's Joseph Parker. Parker wants that fight. It is unclear, however, if Usyk feels the same way. But it seems likely that whether Usyk takes the fight or not, the outcome will be the same. If Usyk fights Parker and wins, he retires and the WBO title becomes vacant. Parker moves up from holding his current interim champion to being full champion. If Usyk fights Parker and loses, Parker is the new WBO champion. The question at that point is whether Usyk goes for the rematch or not. That means that Joseph Parker, a year from now, should be the full WBO champion. Should be... The other belts in Usyk's arsenal – the WBC, WBA, and the IBF – will be up for grabs should Usyk retire. The WBC's interim champion is the German boxer Agit Kabayel, 26-0 (18). Kabayel may be among the leaders of the younger generation of heavyweights (he is 32), but if he does not get to fight Usyk and gets elevated to full WBC champion, that may not last long. Kabayel is strong and good, but is an undersized heavyweight in a landscape of giants. As it stands, his top contender is Lawrence Okolie, followed by Anthony Joshua, Efe Ajagba, Martin Bakole, and Filip Hrgovic. The easiest fight out of all of them would arguably be Joshua if he has not retired in the interim. Moving to the WBA, the organisation has three heavyweight champions – Usyk is 'super' champion, Kubrat Pulev is the regular champion, and Fabio Wardley is the 'interim' champion. Should Usyk retire, expect a stadium fight in the UK between Pulev and Wardley. Once Wardley wins that, the top contenders would be Michael Hunter and Moses Itauma. So the end of 2026 could see Itauma facing Wardley in an all-British title match. The IBF, meanwhile, has yet to update officially its ratings, still listing Daniel Dubois as its champion. While there is no #1 contender, ranked from two to five are Derek Chisora, Efe Ajagba, Frank Sanchez, and Joshua. Should that title open up, Chisora would be the highest-placed contender – but it is unsure whether he is retired yet (at 41, he cannot be far away). A more-interesting fight would be Ajagba and Sanchez. Sanchez would be favourited to win, but the title would be leaving Europe either way. All of this is not taking into account the gravitational pull that Fury and Joshua can exert through their box office power. Any champion could, in inheriting a championship, defend against either in a special voluntary defense. The only thing that can be predicted with any clarity is that the exit of Oleksandr Usyk will be like a plug being removed from the division. Chaos is likely to be the only thing to reign undisputedly. Liverpool ramp up replacement striker search after agreeing Darwin Nunez fee
Liverpool have agreed a deal to sell Darwin Nunez to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal for an initial £46.2m. The striker, who wanted to leave to go to Saudi Arabia in January, is set to end his three-season spell at Anfield, while Liverpool could now enter the market for another centre-forward. They have had a £110m bid for Alexander Isak swiftly rejected by Newcastle and have indicated they will not raise their offer but are looking for a player they deem of sufficient quality to start, who is available and at what they regard as a fair price. They have already signed one striker this summer, in Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for £69m, and if they cannot add another, are aware that players such as Florian Wirtz, Rio Ngumoha, Curtis Jones and Jeremie Frimpong can all play in the front three if required. Before Al Hilal made an offer that could rise to £56.6m, including add-ons, Nunez also attracted interest from AC Milan but there were doubts if the Serie A side could meet Liverpool's asking price. Napoli had bid for Nunez earlier in the summer, but without coming close to a sum Liverpool would accept and when they wanted to defer the first payment until 2026, before instead signing attacker Lorenzo Lucca. Nunez joined Liverpool for £64m in 2022, with add-ons taking the potential fee to a club record of £85m. He scored 15 goals in his first season in England and 18 in the second but got just seven in 47 appearances in all competitions last year as Arne Slot preferred to use either the late Diogo Jota or Luis Diaz as his centre-forward. Liverpool rejected Nunez's request to leave in mid-season, wanting to keep him to help their successful bid to win a 20th league title. Should he go now leave, Liverpool will have brought in around £190m for players this summer, following Tyler Morton's move to Lyon for £15m.
