Malaysia mulls lifting pork import ban from Thailand to address rising retail prices

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is considering lifting its ban on pork imports from Thailand as part of efforts to stabilise retail prices which have been soaring in recent months, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. The Agriculture and Food Security Minister said the Veterinary Services Department (DVS) had re-evaluated the risk analysis related to African Swine Fever (ASF) and was now considering allowing pork cuts from Thailand to be imported once again. However, he said this would be subject to strict conditions, including full compliance with Malaysia's import requirements agreed upon with Thai veterinary authorities, as well as audits and recommendations from DVS before approval is granted. 'At present, ASF is categorised as endemic in Malaysia, with outbreaks continuing to emerge from time to time in certain areas,' he said in a written parliamentary reply on Wednesday (Aug 6). Mohamad said the most recent outbreak was detected on July 9 in Kampung Selamat, Seberang Perai Utara, Penang, affecting three pig farms with a combined pig population of 2,799. As of now, he said a total of 578 pigs have been culled and disposed of, while 124 deaths have been recorded. Culling operations at all three farms remain ongoing. He said Penang DVS has enforced various measures to contain the outbreak, including restricting pig movement, disinfecting affected farms and destroying infected livestock. Responding to Cha Kee Chin (PH-Rasah), who raised concerns about soaring pork prices and the government's preparedness to temporarily allow imports from neighbouring countries, the ministry acknowledged the situation but clarified that retail pork pricing falls under the purview of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry. Nevertheless, Mohamad said his ministry had taken several steps to ensure pork supply remains sufficient across the country. These include approving imports from several overseas abattoirs, evaluating new potential export countries such as Brazil and Thailand, and facilitating the transport of live pigs from Sarawak to Selangor for slaughter to meet the growing demand for fresh pork in Peninsular Malaysia. He added that it would continue monitoring the situation closely while upholding stringent health and safety standards in any decision involving pork importation.

Backbencher laments absence of affordable homes in Sibu

DAP's Oscar Ling said many from among the lower- and middle-income bracket in Sibu are waiting for affordable homes. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : A backbencher has urged the government to build affordable housing projects in Sibu, Sarawak, under the 13th Malaysia Plan, saying that there are no such homes in the constituency. DAP's Oscar Ling (PH-Sibu) said there have been no affordable housing projects developed by the federal government in Sibu to date. Oscar Ling. 'The only affordable housing project under the housing and local government is in Sibu Jaya and that can be considered abandoned,' he told the Dewan Rakyat during the debate on the 13MP today. 'My constituents are asking whether this project will continue under the 13MP. 'We cannot allow Sibu to be left behind in the national housing agenda.' Ling said many in the lower- and middle-income groups in Sibu were waiting for affordable homes He suggested that Putrajaya consider building affordable homes in Sungai Bidut in Sibu's West Bank area. He said the West Bank had great potential for development, citing a recent state government project to build a bridge connecting the area with the Sibu city centre. Sibu Hospital in dire need of upgrades The three-term MP also said Sibu Hospital was nearly at maximum capacity, pointing out that it serves as the main hospital for referrals in Sarawak's entire central region. 'The hospital is facing space limitations and insufficient facilities. The demand for specialist services is increasing year-on-year,' he said. Ling called for the 13MP to include a new building for the hospital in line with plans to turn it into a regional hospital like the Miri Hospital, and Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) in Kuching. He said radiotherapy treatment services were currently only available at SGH, forcing cancer patients from areas like Kapit and Song to incur high travel and accommodation costs to receive treatment. He also said it was time for Sibu Hospital to have its own oncology department equipped with the necessary facilities as well as human resources and treatment capabilities. 'This can only be achieved if a new Sibu Hospital building is built with specific plans to accommodate such facilities,' he said.

Reinforce control of vape products, SUPP man calls on government

Lau says this in view of the MoH planning to impose a full ban on the use and sale of open-system vape products. – Photo by Peter Boon SIBU (Aug 3): Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Central Youth chief Councillor Kevin Lau has called upon the government to put in more efforts in enforcing the control of vape products under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health (Act 852). He said this in view of the Ministry of Health (MoH) planning to impose a full ban on the use and sale of open-system vape products. 'Even if you have the law but no enforcement, the government still cannot control the sales, which would still be very rampant. 'There is a need to have more enforcement and also coordination between multiple agencies,' said Lau, also SUPP Bawang Assan chairman, in a statement. According to him, the real challenge now is that the industry has grown exponentially over the years, and today, it seems to be part of social behaviours among the youths. He added: 'It is even more concerning that such products are available online for purchase. 'Today, more people, especially young parents, have growing concern. 'Worryingly, there are vapes that are laced with synthetic drugs; moreover, this is very difficult to detect due to the variety of flavours,' he said. 'I strongly believe that there is an urgent need for the government to look into tightening regulations, especially the enforcement on the sales of vapes.' Lau also stressed about the urgent need of raising awareness among students and youth of the risks and long-term effects brought by vaping, especially the dangers posed by those laced with synthetic drugs. 'It is important to establish a culture advocating the youths to lead a healthy lifestyle and to be free from such products,' he added.
