Wrestlers Ravi Dahiya, Deepak Punia join Sports Min Mandaviya at 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' in Delhi
New Delhi: Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here turned into a celebration of fitness and inspiration this morning as the latest edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle witnessed enthusiastic participation from 750 participants, including teachers, athletes, Fit India influencers and fitness lovers.
Leading the charge was Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, who cycled alongside Union Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao along with a powerful line-up of national icons, including Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Ravi Dahiya, Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Deepak Punia, Guinness World Record holder Rohtash Chaudhary (Push-up Man of India), and renowned mountaineer Narender Kumar, who recently conquered Mount Annapurna, the 10th highest mountain in the world at 8091 meters, in a record time of 12 days.
With this week's theme being 'Cycling with Teachers', the event witnessed educators, mentors, and academic coaches from various educational institutions across the city, including schools, universities and private institutes.
'Teachers are the heroes for our students and now, you have to become heroes for Viksit Bharat. You all can make cycling a fashion and I urge all teachers to restart using cycles themselves and ask students to emulate the same. We are in the digital age, but we also need to improve our physical fitness. So, we have to transition from digital activity to physical activity. This will ensure the mission of 'Fight Against Obesity' and the vision of Fit India and Viksit Bharat, which our Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has laid down, takes shape," Mandaviya said while addressing the participants.
This Sunday's event was conducted with the teachers in collaboration with our esteemed partners - the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), MY Bharat and the State Governments. The special partners included Physical Education Foundation of India (PEFI), Delhi University, CBSE and CISCE boards, Kendriya Vidyalaya, National Progressive School Conference, National Forensic Sciences University, Yogasana India, Indian Rope Skipping Foundation, and more.
Wrestling stars Dahiya and Punia shared words of encouragement with the crowd, urging youth and educators alike to incorporate physical fitness into their daily lives. 'This is a very important movement started by our government to ensure physical fitness is given thorough attention. 'Sharir is shaktimaan' (your body is the mightiest thing) and keeping this mantra in mind, everyone should cycle at least 1-2 hours a day,' remarked Ravi Dahiya, silver medalist, Tokyo Olympics.
'I truly appreciate this movement as a commendable initiative, and I believe everyone should take up cycling as it promotes fitness and contributes to a pollution-free India,' added Deepak Punia, who narrowly missed out on a medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Also present was Narender Kumar, fresh from his Mount Annapurna expedition. "I believe, cycling is a great start to better health. Sundays on Cycle seems like a perfect way to promote that. For me, climbing the Annapurna was undoubtedly difficult, but what made it possible was consistent efforts towards fitness. This movement also gives out that message," he said.
The Fit India Sundays on Cycle initiative has touched 2.5 lakh participation from over 5000 locations, since its launch in December 2024. The wide expanse of the cycling drive has seen the event reach places like Andaman and Nicobar, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh as well as Lakshwadeep Islands.
Events are simultaneously held nationwide with massive participation from SAI Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), SAI Training centres, SAI Extension centres, the Khelo India centres (KICs) and Khelo India State Centres of Excellence (KISCEs), among others.

He stressed that the combination of massive expected attendance and security shortfalls would create a potentially dangerous situation during the RCB celebration event. Despite these advance warnings, the event received official approval from authorities. The letter was reportedly shared with then-Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, who further escalated the concerns to Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh. However, the celebration proceeded as planned, ultimately resulting in the deadly crowd surge. Hours before the tragic incident occurred, senior IAS officer G Sathyavathi, who was responsible for managing the Vidhana Soudha event, publicly urged fans to relocate to the nearby stadium instead. The RCB team was initially honored at the legislature building before celebrations continued at the stadium, but the crowd management issues had already reached critical levels. The aftermath of the stampede led to immediate administrative action, with B Dayananda being suspended by Karnataka's home department just one day after the incident. Officials cited serious planning and coordination failures during the RCB victory celebrations as the reason for his removal from the position. The tragedy has sparked intense political controversy, with the Bharatiya Janata Party launching sharp criticism against the Congress-led state government. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy condemned what he termed "complete failure in crowd management," arguing that authorities should have anticipated the massive turnout following RCB's historic IPL victory. Exclusion of Arunachal weightlifter from Commonwealth trials slammed
GUWAHATI The Arunachal Olympic Association (AOA) and other organisations in the State have slammed the exclusion of weightlifter Sambo Lapung, a consistent gold medal winner, from the trials for the Commonwealth Championships 2025. Lapung appealed to the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) a few days ago, requesting a chance to participate in the trials scheduled for June 13-14, but his plea was rejected. In a letter to Indian Olympic Association president P.T. Usha on June 5, AOA secretary general Bamang Tago sought justice for Lapung, who was allegedly ignored to accommodate Harshit Sehrawat of Haryana. A copy of the letter was sent to Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, the Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the Director General of the Sports Authority of India. Lapung hails from the East Kameng district, which falls under the Arunachal West parliamentary constituency represented by Mr Rijiju. 'Lapung, a three-time national gold medallist and record holder, has consistently dominated the 96 kg category, securing gold at the Senior National Weightlifting Championships held in Chandigarh (2022), Itanagar (2023), and Himachal Pradesh (2024). His outstanding performances include lifting 338 kg in the 2023 Nationals, outperforming his closest competitors, including Harshit Sehrawat, who secured silver with a total of 328 kg,' Mr Tago wrote. 'Despite this, the IWF released a selection list that excluded Lapung from the 94 kg category trials, while selecting Sehrawat, typically a 102 kg lifter, based on his silver medal performance at the Inter Railways Championship (335 kg). This selection, bypassing a reigning national champion who has repeatedly outperformed the selected athlete in direct competition, has raised serious concerns over transparency, meritocracy, and possible regional bias,' he wrote. Later, Mr Tago told reporters that Sehrawat could have been favoured because his father is a coach or because of the State he hails from. 'This matter is not only about one individual. It reflects a growing pattern of underrepresentation and neglect of athletes from the northeastern region in national-level selections. Talents such as Sambo Lapung, Kojum Taba, Jimjang Deru, and Soram Hitler Tagru have brought pride to the country. Yet, their efforts are too often overlooked during crucial opportunities,' he said. The East Kameng Social Welfare and Cultural Organisation also criticised the IWF for ignoring Lapung and sought the intervention of Mr Rijiju. The organisation said Lapung's exclusion not only undermines his achievements but also wounds the sentiments of the people of Arunachal Pradesh and the region beyond. 'This decision reinforces a recurring pattern of perceived stereotyping and discrimination against athletes from our region in mainland India,' its chairperson, Raya Flago, said.

Jyothi Yarraji continued her scorching form this season after she scripted a victory in the women's 100m hurdles as India bagged six gold medals on the opening day of the Taiwan Athletics Open 2025 in Chinese Taipei on Saturday. Jyothi sprinted to gold after clocking 12.99 seconds. Despite a scratchy start that forced her to drop in the second place, she managed to surge ahead in the last 20 metres and secured her spot at the top of the podium with a powerful finish. Jyothi had clocked 13.18s in the heats to earn a spot in the final and was the only athlete in the event to finish with a sub-13 timing in the final, according to As per a statement from the Andhra Pradesh Raj Bhavan, speaking on Jyoti Yarraji's performance, the Governor said, 'Kum. Jyothi Yarraji made the people of Andhra Pradesh and the nation proud of her achievement and wished her to win many more such laurels in the future.' Chinese Taipei's Yuan-Kai Hsieh and Chen Kuei-ru won silver and bronze with timings of 13.72s and 13.75s, respectively. India extended its dominance and won gold medals in the men's and women's 100m relays. Despite fumbling with the baton exchange, the quartet of Sudheeksha Vadluri, Abinaya Rajarajan, Sneha SS and Nithya Gandhe won the women's 100m relay with a meet record time of 44.07s. Sudheeksha V, who replaced Srabani Nanda, was the only new addition to the Indian women's relay team that won the Asian title last week. Vietnam finished second, and Asia Biomedical, a club, finished third with timings of 44.38s and 44.53s, respectively.
