Private-capital funds: Depressed distributions with no end in sight

AFTER a bacchanal of deal activity lasting into 2021, private-market participants are still nursing a hangover. Assets acquired at premium valuations at the market peak have been creating headaches for general partners (GPs), who must decide whether to hold out for buyers at current valuations or stomach write-downs for a shot at quick liquidity.
Net asset value (NAV) is increasingly bottled up in old funds that should otherwise be liquidating. For now, it seems only top-shelf assets are finding buyers, while assets with weaker fundamentals are still on ice.
In this column, we take a sober look at how private-capital markets are adjusting to a world of depressed distributions, with no exits in sight. Limited partners (LPs), hoping for an outpouring of liquidity in 2025, may instead want to brace themselves for another dry year.
Recent vintages falling further behind
Private-capital distributions remain subdued, extending a slowdown that began in the wake of 2021's exit boom. What once looked like a brief pause increasingly feels like a prolonged holding pattern and a test of patience for LPs.
This slowdown is especially apparent in the divergence of the net-cash-flow paths between vintage cohorts. While cash flows for most historical vintages follow remarkably similar paths, recent vintages are drifting from the script. The traditional cadence of investment, ramp-up and harvest appears to be slipping out of rhythm.
In some cases, as with the 2015-2017 vintages, this slowdown looks like mean reversion, dragging these vintages back down after a period of unusually strong liquidity – particularly in venture capital and buyout. In others, like the 2018-2020 vintages, the drop appears more acute, suggesting not just a return to historical norms but also a deeper pullback in realisations.

Structural shifts may be reinforcing the deviations from long-run averages. Strategy evolution in areas such as private credit, shifting exit dynamics in buyouts, and a valuation overhang in venture and real estate all suggest that today's market environment is markedly different from past cycles. Historical analogues are becoming less-reliable guides.
But the message is clear: Recent vintages aren't just behind the curve – they're navigating a new course.
Water everywhere, but not a drop to drink
Across private-capital strategies, NAVs in old funds (those that have outlived the average liquidation age of their asset class) are at or near record levels, reaching US$250 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to data from the MSCI Private Capital Universe. For LPs anticipating liquidity from their more mature private-equity (PE) commitments, some unwelcome news: This rise in late-life NAV is largely attributable to distribution rates, which have fallen to record lows, rather than to strong growth.
PE distribution rates remain depressed, with specific implications for funds that are over the hill. The dearth of distributions is bottling up assets that were once reliable candidates for exits. This has meant fund lives that drag on longer than expected, and LPs are increasingly looking to more mature corners of their portfolios for liquidity.
The same can't be said for private credit and private real estate. In the former, the self-liquidating nature of loans has stabilised distributions and kept NAVs in check through funds' golden years. For the latter, write-downs kept a lid on valuations coming out of 2020, even as transaction activity remained depressed.
For PE distribution rates to revert to historical norms and old NAVs to run off, there are two options: one hopeful, one not. In the optimistic scenario, deal activity recovers and a wave of exits provides some much-needed liquidity. In the other, GPs come to believe that many of these long-held assets are overvalued and accept write-downs as the cost of winding down a fund, as we've seen in real estate.
Tempering cash-flow expectations
Across PE and private real estate, distribution rates are near historic lows, and recent market volatility may put cash flows under further pressure when we start to see data for 2025.
Historically, prolonged downturns in public-equity markets have been reflected in private-capital distributions. The dotcom bust and 2008 global financial crisis both hit distributions hard; but in recent years, distributions have remained depressed despite a rebound in public equities.
For LPs counting on distributions to fund capital calls from other private commitments, this combination of public-equity sell-offs and falling distribution rates presents a challenge: if forced to sell liquid assets to meet capital calls, it's likely to be when prices are down.
Private credit, in contrast, has continued to distribute more or less apace, benefiting from elevated interest rates passing through to lenders. This cash-flow diversification may become an increasingly important benefit of private-credit allocations.
Not everything is rosy in private credit, however. GPs are increasingly writing down loan values as borrowers struggle under the weight of persistently high interest rates and new-found uncertainty around the economy's trajectory.
Valuation multiples in free fall may call for an Ebitda parachute
Between 2022 and 2024, buyout exits were sold at lower median-valuation multiples than assets still held in portfolios – an inversion from historical norms – despite exhibiting stronger margin growth and lower leverage. In contrast, held assets, carried at higher multiples, are grappling with contracting profitability and rising leverage, raising questions about valuations and their paths to exit.
These questions are amplified by the macro backdrop: sticky inflation risk, higher-for-longer interest rates and growth uncertainty that could tip into stagflation. Held assets confront these macro headwinds with little balance-sheet cushion, given their narrowing-since-entry margins and rising leverage.
Over the past decade, exited assets have consistently exhibited stronger median Ebitda (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation) margin growth since their entry and more contained median net-debt-to-Ebitda ratios than held assets, which reflect GPs' tendency to prioritise exiting higher-performing assets.
This selection trend proved especially relevant between 2022 and 2024, as exited assets' robust fundamentals cushioned the impact of falling valuations. In 2025, with multiples under pressure and rising macro uncertainty, strong fundamentals may be the last line of defence against deeper erosion in exit proceeds and more strain on LPs.
Is the party over?
Recent vintages of private-capital funds have plenty of ground to cover if they're going to catch up with their older peers' cash-flow patterns, and the surprising volatility in public markets of early 2025 is unlikely to help them close the gap.
Returns for older private-equity funds have been flat, but more assets are accumulating in funds that are struggling to liquidate their holdings. GPs are preferentially exiting portfolio companies with strong fundamentals, leaving an unclear path for selling those remaining assets.
LPs who were hoping for a rebound in transaction activity, and thus liquidity, in 2025 may need to adjust their plans.

South-east Asia's polymer production crisis worsens as US-China trade shift looms

[SINGAPORE] South-east Asia's petrochemical industry is facing a double whammy of weakening export demands and potential import surges, as trade tensions could redirect US polymer to the region's already-saturated market, sustaining pressure on production. Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), as crucial downstream segments, are encountering 'considerable challenges' in the region, noted commodity markets intelligence firm Argus. This is amid trade uncertainty exacerbated by a US federal appeals court ruling on Wednesday (Jun 11) that President Donald Trump's tariffs can remain in place while it reviews an earlier court decision to block them. The latest ruling complicates newly drafted US-China plans to ease trade tensions. Argus highlighted that additional US polymer supply is anticipated to enter South-east Asia as part of trade flow redirection, driven by cost-competitiveness and the low likelihood of countries in the region imposing retaliatory tariffs on US cargoes. The London-headquartered research firm found that some US producers and regular exporters had already begun sending their cargoes to Vietnam instead of China. 'However, the situation remains fluid, and any continued shift in trade flows could contribute to additional supply entering the South-east Asian market,' the research firm said. Sign Up Sign Up During the US-China trade war in Trump's first term in office, US polymer exports were redirected to countries in the Asia-Pacific. Specifically, US PE exports to Singapore and Malaysia rose by 328 per cent and 264 per cent, respectively, Argus noted in another report released on May 30. Plastic goods pressuring demand Meanwhile, trade uncertainty could prompt new trade routes for finished plastic goods, beyond the polymer trade. Chinese plastic products once bound for the US will likely seek alternative markets – including South-east Asia. This threatens to further strain the region's export-dependent finished goods sector, putting indirect downward pressure on polymer demand. In 2024, around 8 per cent of the US' imported finished plastic goods came from South-east Asian countries, which now see the risk of a significant fall in demand, noted Argus. Around 17 per cent of China's PE imports were from the US in 2024. The intelligence firm noted that South-east Asian countries could explore opportunities to increase run rates and export PE to China with low-cost feedstocks amid the trade tensions between the world's two largest economies. 'But this remains a challenge for the region, as it predominantly relies on naphtha as a feedstock, which is less cost-competitive than lighter options,' it added. It also said that limited upstream integration further disadvantages the region, compared with markets in the Middle East and North-east Asia, where more integrated supply chains enhance cost efficiency. China factor Other than trade uncertainty, China's expanding polymer production capacity also threatens to deepen South-east Asia's existing polymer production crisis, where some regional crackers had been in extended shutdowns since late 2024. Fumiko Dobashi, manager of Asia-Pacific chemicals price reporting at S&P Global, highlighted a trade dynamic between the US, China and Asia in a briefing on Jun 3: The US exports raw materials such as ethane, liquefied petroleum gas and polymers, while Asia ships back finished plastic products and rubber products. However, China has been expanding its polymer capacity, transforming itself into a net exporter from a net importer and adding to the polymer flood into nearby regions, said Dobashi. She noted that while the US remains a major polymer exporter, the trend of China becoming a significant player continues, with the country increasing its exports to Asean nations such as Vietnam. Declining operating rates Over the past five years, South-east Asia's PE and PP operating rates have declined by 25 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively, on average as exports fell and imports rose, Argus noted. Meanwhile, the region's PP net trade position has shifted from net exporter to net importer since 2022; as has its PE trade position since 2024, amid China's accelerated progress towards self-sufficiency and increasing exports. Specifically, China's PP exports into the region have trebled to 636,000 tonnes over the past five years, mainly to Vietnam and Indonesia. China's focus on self-sufficiency also significantly reduced South-east Asia's PE and PP exports by 1.8 million tonnes, or 37 per cent, over the same period, according to the research firm. It added that the region's polymer prices will be further depressed by shrinking downstream export demand and more supply entering the market.

[NEW YORK] A growing chorus of advisers inside and outside the Trump administration are pushing another name to serve as the next chair of the Federal Reserve: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. President Donald Trump said on Friday he would name a successor 'very soon' to replace Jerome Powell, whose term as Fed chair ends in May 2026. The small list of candidates under consideration has included Kevin Warsh, a former Fed official whom Trump interviewed for the Treasury secretary role in November, according to people familiar with the matter. But Bessent – who is leading Trump's effort to kickstart the US economy with sweeping changes to trade, taxes and regulation – is also now one of the contenders for the job, said the people, who requested anonymity to discuss private conversations. Formal interviews for the position have not begun, two of the people said. 'I have the best job in Washington,' Bessent said in response to a request for comment. 'The president will decide who's best for the economy and the American people.' A senior administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, disputed the reporting without providing further specifics. As Treasury chief, Bessent would traditionally play a key role in the search and interview process for the next Fed chair. 'He's a dark horse candidate,' Adams said, adding that Warsh – who served as a governor on the Fed board from 2006 to 2011 – would also be a good choice. Asked specifically about Warsh on Friday, Trump said: 'He's very highly thought of.' Bessent has been at the forefront of negotiations on a US-China trade deal, arguably the most important of the pacts the president is seeking to forge as part of his effort to reshape the global trade landscape. 'Scott Bessent proved he could implement President Trump's agenda during an incredibly turbulent first six months,' said Steve Bannon, former chief White House strategist and outside adviser to the president. 'He's not just the star of the cabinet, but a safe pair of hands for global capital markets.' The president, who first nominated Powell to the job in 2017, has regularly complained that the Fed chief has been too reluctant to cut borrowing costs. Trump pushed Powell to lower interest rates in a White House meeting last month. Powell and Fed officials have held interest rates steady in 2025, arguing a patient approach to policy is appropriate amid economic uncertainty caused by Trump's expanded and evolving use of tariffs. Fed policymakers have said they expect the announced tariffs to weigh on economic growth and boost inflation. Whoever the Senate confirms for the post will have to prove to the world that the Fed's independence from political meddling remains intact. 'As I told the president, I think Kevin Warsh is just perfect for the job,' he said. PHOTO: REUTERS Five nations and EU urge Trump not to impose new airplane tariffs WASHINGTON - Five nations and the European Union, as well as airlines and aerospace firms worldwide, urged the Trump administration not to impose new national security tariffs on imported commercial planes and parts, documents released on June 10 showed. Airlines and planemakers have been lobbying President Donald Trump to restore the tariff-free regime under the 1979 Civil Aircraft Agreement that has yielded an annual trade surplus of US$75 billion (S$96.5 billion) for the US industry. The documents made public by the US Commerce Department bared concerns over the fallout of possible new tariffs expressed by companies as well as nations such as Canada, China, Japan, Mexico and Switzerland, besides the European Union. 'As reliable trading partners, the European Union and United States should strengthen their trade regarding aircraft and aircraft parts, rather than hinder it by imposing trade restrictions,' the EU wrote. It would consider its options 'to ensure a level playing field', it added. Mr Trump has already imposed tariffs of 10 per cent on nearly all airplane and parts imports. 'No country or region should attempt to support the development of its domestic aircraft manufacturing industry by suppressing foreign competitors,' the Chinese government wrote. Separately, US planemaker Boeing cited a recent trade deal unveiled in May with Britain that ensures tariff-free treatment for airplanes and parts. 'The United States should ensure duty-free treatment for commercial aircraft and their parts in any negotiated trade agreement, similar to its efforts with the United Kingdom,' Boeing told the Commerce Department in a filing. Mexico said in 2024 it exported US$1.45 billion in aircraft parts, just a tenth of the total, to the United States. The EU said it took US exports of aircraft worth roughly US$12 billion, while exporting about US$8 billion of aircraft to the US. In early May, the Commerce Department launched a 'Section 232' national security investigation into imports of commercial aircraft, jet engines and parts that could form the basis for even higher tariffs on such imports. Last week, Delta Air Lines and major trade groups warned of tariffs' impact on ticket prices, aviation safety and supply chains. 'Current US tariffs on aviation are putting domestic production of commercial aircraft at risk,' Airbus Americas CEO Robin Hayes said in a filing. 'It is not realistic or sensible today to create a 100 per cent domestic supply chain in any country.' Boeing said it had been increasing US content in its airplanes over the last decade and its newest airplanes, the 737 MAX 10 and 777X, would have 'more than 88 per cent domestically-sourced content'. The United Auto Workers union, which represents 10,000 aerospace workers, said it supports tariffs and domestic production quotas, adding that US aerospace employment has fallen to 510,000 in 2024 from 850,000 in 1990. 'To safeguard the entire aerospace supply chain across the commercial and defense sectors, comprehensive tariffs and production quotas on several products are needed,' it said. JetBlue Airways opposed new tariffs, however, saying, 'Trade policy should reinforce, not destabilise, the proven systems that keep our aircraft flying safely and affordably.'
