France's Ogier claims Rally of Sardinia
OLBIAa, Italy: Eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogier picked up his third win of the season with victory in the Rally of Sardinia on Sunday.
The Toyota driver, who is not competing in the full 14 rounds of the WRC, began the day 17 seconds ahead of Ott Tanak (Hyundai), enabling him to control the rally from the front until a late error almost cost him the win.
On the final stage, Ogier failed to turn into a tight corner carved with deep ruts and was forced to stop and reverse before restarting.
"In the ruts, I just couldn't turn the car," said Ogier.
"There was no speed at all, so I didn't try to force it and hit it. I preferred to stop and reverse. Not ideal. Still, it was enough to win."
Ogier's fifth win in Sardinia and his 64th career victory lifts him to second in the title race, 19 points behind leader Elfyn Evans, who could only finish fourth in his Toyota.

"We have to be satisfied with this weekend," said a positive Evans who lost time with a wheel change on Saturday.
"We didn't have any major problems and we're in the championship battle with these guys (who finished ahead of him). They were very fast."
The Estonian Tanak closed the gap to Ogier to 8sec but had to settle for second ahead of another Toyota driver, Finland's Kalle Rovanpera who came in 50sec off the lead and drops to third in the title race, a point behind Ogier. It was Toyota's sixth victory in six rallies this season and meant the same podium for the second rally running following Portugal in mid-May.
Takamoto Katsuta (Toyota) rounded out the top five while reigning world champion Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) went off the road on Friday's fifth stage and finished outside the points in 19th position.
The next round of the WRC is the Acropolis Rally which takes place in Greece at the end of June. — AFP

French Veteran Ogier wins Rally of Portugal
MATOSINHOS, Portugal: Eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogier chalked up the 63rd victory of his WRC career in the Rally of Portugal on Sunday, the fifth of 14 rounds of the world championship. The 41-year-old French Toyota driver finished 8.7 seconds ahead of Hyundai's Ott Tanak (Hyundai) with Ogier's Finnish teammate Kalle Rovanpera completing the podium a further 3.50sec behind. "I think it's something I can be proud of, the way I have managed to stay competitive after all these years," said Ogier who claimed a record seventh victory in Portugal. "Thanks to the team — it was great to drive this weekend. "Ott was just flying (like) crazy, but maybe a bit too much. I don't know. On our side, race management is definitely a craft we have, so I'm happy. Seven times here in Portugal, not too bad. Filling out the top five were reigning world champion Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) and Japan's Takamoto Katsuta (Toyota) while championship leader Evans could only finish sixth. Ogier spent a long time trailing in the rally behind Tanak before hitting the front late on Saturday when the Estonian suffered a mechanical problem. He went into Sunday's race with a 27-second advantage and was able to take control to claim his third podium in three races this season. He won the season-opener in Monte Carlo at the end of January and took second in the Canaries at the end of April. Evans still tops the standings with 118 but Rovenpera's third place means he is now just 20 points adrift of the Welshman, Ogier a further two points back in third. Toyota cites tariffs as it forecasts 35% net profit drop
Tokyo: Japanese auto giant Toyota forecast on Thursday a 35 percent year-on-year drop in net profit for the current financial year, citing Donald Trump's vehicle tariffs among other factors. Carmakers have been among the hardest hit by the US president's multi-pronged approach to trade. On top of a 25 percent tariff already placed on finished imported cars, the Trump administration on Saturday imposed a similar duty on auto parts, including engines and transmissions. For the 2025-26 financial year that began in April, Toyota now forecasts net profit of 3.1 trillion yen ($21.6 billion). "The estimated impact of US tariffs in April and May 2025 have been tentatively factored in," the world's top-selling automaker said in a statement. The company logged a net profit of nearly 4.8 trillion yen in the 12 months to March 31, down 3.6 percent year-on-year but beating its earlier forecast of 4.5 trillion yen issued in February. As of this month, Toyota estimated the tariffs would impact its 2025-26 operating profit by 180 billion yen. Asked about the longer-term impact, Toyota President and CEO Koji Sato said the situation was "difficult to predict right now." "US tariffs are currently being negotiated between governments, and details are still fluid," he added. Toyota exports 500,000 vehicles annually to the United States from Japan, Sato noted. "In the short term, we are adjusting shipments... while in the mid- to long-term, we will pursue the local development of products that suit local customers," he said, while maintaining the goal of producing three million vehicles annually in Japan.__ AFP
