Australia PM Albanese kicks off China visit focused on trade
Albanese met with Shanghai Party Secretary Chen Jining on Sunday, the first in a series of high-level exchanges that will include meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang and Chairman Zhao Leji of the National People's Congress.
Albanese is leading 'a very large business delegation' to China, which speaks to the importance of the economic relations between Australia and China, he told Chinese state broadcaster CGTN upon his arrival in Shanghai Saturday.
During a weeklong trip, Albanese is set to meet business, tourism and sport representatives in Shanghai and Chengdu including a CEO roundtable Tuesday in Beijing, his office said.
It is Albanese's second visit to China since his center-left Labor Party government was first elected in 2022. The party was reelected in May with an increased majority.
Albanese has managed to persuade Beijing to remove a series of official and unofficial trade barriers introduced under the previous conservative government that cost Australian exporters more than 20 billion Australian dollars ($13 billion) a year.
Beijing severed communications with the previous administration over issues including Australia's calls for an independent inquiry into the origins of and responses to COVID-19. But Albanese wants to reduce Australia's economic dependence on China, a free trade partner.
'My government has worked very hard to diversify trade … and to increase our relationships with other countries in the region, including India and Indonesia and the ASEAN countries,' Albanese said before his visit, referring to the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
'But the relationship with China is an important one, as is our relationships when it comes to exports with the north Asian economies of South Korea and Japan,' he added.
Chinese state-run Xinhua News Agency, in an editorial Sunday, described China's relationship with Australia as 'steadily improving' and undergoing 'fresh momentum.'
'There are no fundamental conflicts of interest between China and Australia,' the editorial stated. 'By managing differences through mutual respect and focusing on shared interests, the two sides can achieve common prosperity and benefit.'

Now, one of the chains key franchise operators has closed 200 stores. But, it has a wild new food item designed to win back audience. While it's tempting to blame The Noid for any struggles Domino's has, that evil scamp has been famously ineffective in his efforts to disrupt the pizza chain. In many ways, he's like Wile E. Coyote being embarrassed by The Roadrunner. The Noid has also confined his activities to the United States as it's difficult to travel abroad when you wear a mask. That creates all sorts of passport problems and has left The Noid as an ineffective, American pizza, terrorist, not a global one. Earlier this year, Domino's (DPZ) largest franchisee, Domino's Pizza Enterprises (DPE) shared its decision to close over 200 stores. "Less than three weeks ago, we announced we were closing 205 loss-making stores, mainly in Japan and mostly opened during COVID-19. This isto sharpen focus on stores and regions with the greatest potential, improving profitability and support our broader turnaround," DPE CEO Mark Dyck shared during the company's half-year earnings call. The CEO actually seemed like he only mentioned the 205 closing stores because of legal operations. "Because of disclosure obligations, we updated you then because we are moving at pace. I want to be clear that those recent closures in Japan do not reflect and shouldnot be interpreted as a statement on our long-term opportunity to grow, including new store openings," he added."The fact is good stores create great value,and you can see that by the improvement in unit economics of our franchise partners we have achieved over the past 12 months." DPE's biggest marker is Japan where it still has over 750 locations. The franchisee, perhaps to distract from the stores closing has introduced the bonkers new "Crispizzaburger" across Japan. The Crispizzaburger seems like the sort of product someone who has only seen the United States on television might create. It's a crispy pizza crust topped with various ingredients folded over, sprinkled with parmesan cheese, and baked. It does not offer a burger patty or really look like a burger, but it is crispy and made from pizza dough. "Originally sold by Domino's Pizza in Australia, the 'Crispizzaburger' has been adapted for local tastes in Japan, with three flavours to choose from - the classic 'Garlic Bacon Cheese,' 'Teriyaki Cheese,' and the limited-time "Double Cheese Beef." Each variety comes with a side, and is available for takeout from the time of opening until 4 p.m., priced at 790 yen each (about $5.36), Japan Today reported. Sides include baked potato wedges, cheese sticks, chicken nuggets, salads, clam chowder, and a soup called "corn pottage, "a warm, sweet corn soup full of crunchy corn pieces," the chain shared on its website. At least 30 are killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza as war deaths top 58,000, officials say
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip killed at least 30 people on Sunday, including six children at a water collection point, local health officials said, despite attempts by mediators to bring about a ceasefire. Israel and Hamas appeared no closer to a breakthrough in talks meant to pause the 21-month war and free some Israeli hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in Washington last week to discuss the deal with the Trump administration, but a new sticking point has emerged over the deployment of Israeli troops during the truce, raising questions over the feasibility of a new deal. Israel says it will only end the war once Hamas surrenders, disarms and goes into exile, something it refuses to do. Hamas says it is willing to free all the remaining 50 hostages, less than half said to be alive, in exchange for an end to the war and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces. Gaza's Health Ministry said Sunday that more than 58,000 people have been killed in the war. The ministry doesn't differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count but says more than half of the dead are women and children. In the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that sparked the war, Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people and abducted 251 in a raid on northern Israel. Throughout the war in Gaza, violence has also surged in the Israeli-occupied West Bank , where funerals were held Sunday for two Palestinians, including Palestinian-American Sayfollah Musallet, 20, who was killed in an attack by Israeli settlers, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Children killed at a water collection point In central Gaza, officials at Al-Awda Hospital said it received 10 bodies after an Israeli strike on a water collection point in nearby Nuseirat. Among the dead were six children, the hospital said. Ramadan Nassar, a witness who lives in the area, told The Associated Press that around 20 children and 14 adults were lined up Sunday morning to fill up water. When the strike occurred, everyone ran and some, including those who were severely injured, fell to the ground, he said. He said Palestinians walk some 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) to fetch water from the area. The Israeli military said it was targeting a militant but that a technical error made its munition fall 'dozens of meters from the target.' It said the incident was being examined. Additionally, health officials said an Israeli strike hit a group of citizens walking in the street on Sunday afternoon, killing 11 people and injuring around 30 others in central Gaza City. Dr. Ahmed Qandil, who specializes in general surgery and laparoscopic, was among those killed, the Gaza Health Ministry said in a statement. One of the ministry's spokespeople, Zaher al-Wahidi, told the AP that Qandil was on his way to Al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital when the strike happened. All bodies and those wounded were taken to Al-Ahli hospital, according to al-Wahidi. In the central town of Zawaida, an Israeli strike on a home killed nine, including two women and three children, officials at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said. The military said it was unaware of a strike on the home, but has struck over 150 targets over the past 24 hours, including what it said are weapons storage facilities, missile launchers and sniping posts. Israel blames Hamas for civilian casualties because the militant group operates out of populated areas. Funeral held for Palestinian-American killed in the West Bank In the West Bank, where violence between Israeli troops and Palestinians has been compounded by attacks on Palestinians by Israeli settlers, funerals were held for a Palestinian-American and a Palestinian friend of his. The Palestinian Health Ministry said Musallet, a Florida native, was killed after being beaten by Israeli settlers. Diana Halum, a cousin, said the attack occurred on his family's land. The Health Ministry initially identified him as Seifeddine Musalat, 23. Musallet's friend, Mohammed al-Shalabi, was shot in the chest, according to the ministry. On Sunday, their bodies were carried through the streets of Al-Mazraa a-Sharqiya, a town south of where they were killed. Mourners, waving Palestinian flags, chanted 'God is great.' In a statement Saturday, Musallet's family said he was 'a kind, hard-working, and deeply-respected young man, working to build his dreams.' It said he built a business in Tampa, Florida, and that he was deeply connected to his Palestinians heritage. Musallet's family said it wants the U.S. State Department to investigate his death and hold the settlers accountable. The State Department said it was aware of the reports of his death but had no comment out of respect for the family. Israel's military has said Palestinians hurled rocks at Israelis in the area on Friday, lightly wounding two people and setting off a larger confrontation. Trump tax break for auto loans could save buyers thousands — but will it boost sales?
Millions of people receive a federal tax deduction for the interest they pay on home loans. Under President Donald Trump's new tax-cut law, many people for the first time also could claim a tax deduction for interest on their vehicle loans. The new tax break will be available even to people who don't itemize deductions. But there are some caveats that could limit its reach. The vehicles must be new, not used. They must be assembled in the U.S. And the loans must be issued no sooner than this year, to list just a few qualifications. Here are some things to know about the new auto loan interest tax deduction: Advertisement 3 Under President Donald Trump's new tax-cut law, people can claim a tax deduction for interest on their vehicle loans. AP Candidate Trump promised an auto loan interest tax break Trump pledged while campaigning last year to make interest on car loans tax-deductible. He said it would make car ownership more affordable and 'stimulate massive domestic auto production.' The idea made it into the big tax-cut bill passed by Congress, which Trump signed into law July 4. Advertisement The law allows taxpayers to deduct up to $10,000 of interest payments annually on loans for new American-made vehicles from 2025 through 2028. It applies to cars, motorcycles, sport utility vehicles, minivans, vans and pickup trucks weighing less than 14,000 pounds, a threshold referred to as light vehicles. But it only applies to vehicles purchased for personal use, not for fleets or commercial purposes. The tax break can be claimed starting on 2025 income tax returns. But the deduction phases out for individuals with incomes between $100,000 and $150,000 or joint taxpayers with incomes between $200,000 and $250,000. Those earning more cannot claim the tax break. 3 Taxpayers can deduct up to $10,000 of interest payments annually on loans for new American-made vehicles from 2025 through 2028. Christopher Sadowski Millions of buyers could benefit, but millions of others will not U.S. automobile dealers sold 15.9 million new light vehicles last year, a little over half of which were assembled in the U.S, according to Cox Automotive. It says around 60% of retail sales are financed with loans. Advertisement After excluding fleet and commercial vehicles and customers above the income cutoff, an estimated 3.5 million new vehicle loans could be eligible for the tax break this year, if purchasing patterns stay the same, said Jonathan Smoke, chief economist at Cox Automotive. Check out more newsletters It's the assembly plant, not the automaker's headquarters that matters The tax break applies to vehicles assembled in the U.S., no matter where the company making them is headquartered. All Tesla vehicles sold in the U.S. are assembled in this country. But so are all Acura brands, the luxury model of Japanese automaker Honda. Last year, 78% of Ford vehicles sold in the U.S. were assembled in this country, according to Cox Automotive. But customers wanting the tax break will need to pay attention to specific models. While the Ford Mustang is assembled in Michigan, the Mustang Mach-E is built in Mexico. Advertisement General Motors assembles all of its Cadillacs in the U.S. But just 44% of its Chevrolets sold last year were assembled in the U.S., and just 14% of Buicks, according to Cox Automotive. That's a lower U.S-assembled rate than Honda (60%), Toyota (52%) and Nissan (48%), which all are headquartered in Japan. Taxpayers could save hundreds of dollars a year The average new vehicle loan is about $44,000 financed over six years. Interest rates vary by customer, so the savings will, too. In general, the tax deduction will decline after the initial year, because interest payments on loans are frontloaded while principal payments grow on the back end. At a 9.3% interest rate, an average new vehicle buyer could save about $2,200 on taxes over four years, Smoke said. The tax savings would be less on a loan at 6.5%, which is the rate figured into calculations by the American Financial Services Association, a consumer credit industry trade group. Some people also could see a reduction in state income taxes Whereas the tax deduction for home loan interest can be claimed only by people itemizing on their tax returns, Congress wrote the deduction for auto loan interest so that it can apply to all taxpayers, including those claiming the standard deduction. 3 The average new vehicle loan is about $44,000 over six years. AFP via Getty Images On a tax form, the auto loan deduction will come before the calculation of a taxpayer's adjusted gross income. That's an important distinction, because many states use a taxpayer's federal adjusted gross income as the starting point for figuring their state income taxes. If that income figure is lower, it could reduce the state taxes owed. The verdict is out on whether the tax break will boost sales At Bowen Scarff Ford in Kent, Washington, customers started asking about the auto loan tax deduction before Congress had even taken a final vote on the tax-cut bill, said General Manager Paul Ray. So he decided to promote it on the dealer's website. Advertisement A website ribbon exclaims: 'CAR LOAN TAX DEDUCTION NOW AVAILABLE' while also promoting an electric vehicle tax credit that is ending soon as a result of Trump's tax-cut law. 'I think it's going to help incentivize vehicle purchases through this year,' Ray said. Celia Winslow, president and CEO of the American Financial Services Association, concurred: 'For some people deciding — should I buy it, should I not — this could be something that tips the scale.' Advertisement Others remain skeptical. According to Smoke's math, the average annual tax savings is smaller than a single month's loan payment for a new vehicle. 'I don't think it moves the needle on somebody on the fence of buying a new vehicle or not,' Smoke said. 'But I think it could influence their decision to finance that vehicle instead of paying cash or instead of leasing a vehicle.'
