Colm O'Regan: Taking a chance like nobody's watching — impossible these days

The Wire has a quote for everything. In this case a regretful Baltimore gangster Stringer has been cheated by State Senator Clay Davis who took his bribes but didn't give him building permits. And now his friend Avon is I told you so-ing him.
'They saw your ghetto ass coming from miles away', he says.
The same after-the-fact advice might be given to Andy Byron who appeared on the Jumbotron at a Coldplay concert, in a romantic clinch with his 'Head of People'.
We all saw his CEO ass from miles away. What Stringer Bell and Andy Byron have in common is that they are unprepared for the different world they find themselves in. Stringer, dealing with a politician; Andy Byron realising that EVERYTHING is on camera now.
I don't have any sympathy for him but I can imagine he must consider it a little unfair. He's just trying to have an affair. Is it too much to ask that it doesn't go all around the world?
In a different era, Andy Byron's namesake Lord could have ridden everyone at that concert and all the members of Coldplay and probably might have got away with it.
Lord Byron got into plenty of trouble but there wasn't enough parchment in London to detail it all.
This other guy? Jeez you get into one squeeze with your head of HR and it appears on every screen in the world.
It's remarkable that you can be CEO and completely fluent in risk assessment but not consider the possibility of being on a big screen at a concert by a band who have a song that is literally called 'The Jumbotron Song'... where Chris Martin improvises music based on who appears on a giant big screen.
Even at matches, people are ready for it. The most disconsolate fan, their team being bate out the door, will still go nuts with joy and excitement if they themselves on the big screen.
Some will sacrifice being able to see themselves by staring down the barrel of the camera.
And they achieve immortality. That guy in the Brendan O'Connor show audience who points at the camera with perfect timing.
Mick McCarthy's pitch-side lantern-jawed smile has been played millions of times now to the turn of George Michael's Careless Whisper.
In fact it's likely that's the first time anyone will hear the song Careless Whisper, George Michael, and Mick McCarthy bound together in perpetuity.
Others hopefully will never know their fame. Like the man in the Winning Streak audience who was clapping so enthusiastically, he hurt his own thumb. That's up on YouTube forever now, next to Andy Byron. The video is called 'The Man Who Hurt His Hand Clapping'.
It's weird watching yourself recorded unbeknownst.
Frequently a privilege reserved for shoplifters and others in trouble, we are increasingly watching ourselves back. I know we have a camera out the front... yet I forget.
I watched it back recently to see whether a parcel might have been horsed into the green bin or not.
The parcel remains unaccounted for. But I did see myself and poor posture and my bald spot, muttering to myself while looking in the boot of the car.
Giving out about lights switched on and doors left open. Pure, unguarded me. Seeing myself as others saw me.
Andy Byron was placed on administrative leave and later resigned. Probably not for infidelity. But for getting caught. To quote Slim Charles in The Wire. Maybe he 'ain't cut out to be no CEO'.
To come back he will take the 'key learnings': namely that with phones, drones, Jumbotrons and CCTV, we may no longer be able to dance or take a chance like no one's watching.
As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met.

Astronomer hires Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin's ex, to deal with Coldplay kiss-cam scandal

Astronomer CEO Andy Byron was exposed canoodling with the head of HR, Kristin Cabot. They're calling it the best crisis marketing anyone's ever seen. Astronomer has hired none other than Gwyneth Paltrow to handle the fallout from the Coldplay kiss cam cheating scandal, in which its CEO, Andy Byron, was exposed canoodling with the head of HR, Kristin Cabot. Since the video of the incident went viral, both Byron and Cabot have lost their jobs. Astronomer, a major tech company worth over a billion pounds with certified 'unicorn' status, has stayed largely silent. Until now. The company officially decided to engage in crisis PR, and boy, did they engage well. Astronomer managed to recruit Oscar-winning actress and Chris Martin's ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, to field questions about the company in light of the scandal. The video opens with Paltrow introducing herself, accompanied by the title 'Temporary Spokesperson.' We need your consent to load this Social Media content. I've been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300-plus employees at Astronomer,' says Paltrow, who split with Coldplay singer Chris Martin in 2014. "Astronomer has gotten a lot of questions over the last few days, and they wanted me to answer the most common ones.' The first question is simply 'OMG. What the actual f—', which Paltrow hilariously dodges by talking about the company's Apache Airflow service. She continues to bat away questions about the scandal while promoting the company, a supremely media-trained professional in full flow. Coldplay accidentally reveal tech CEO's 'affair' with firm's HR director on kiss cam 'We will now be returning to what we do best, delivering game changing results for our customers,' Paltrow concludes. 'Thank you for your interest in Astronomer.' 'This belongs in the crisis management hall of fame,' one X user said in a retweet of the video. 'This is marketing jiu jitsu,' another replied to the video. 'Masterclass in turning a crazy situation into the right form of attention while providing everyone a laugh. Well done,' a fellow X user added. Paltrow is also the CEO of Goop, a wellness company which has been hit with its fair share of difficult press. One of the most memorable moments of backlash came after Goop started selling jade eggs, which a wellness guru recommended be placed inside the buyer's vagina.

Liam Neeson knew he had ‘chemistry' with co-star Pamela Anderson from first meeting

The Ballymena man also revealed he had 'chemistry from very early on' with co-star Pamela Anderson LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 22: Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson attend "The Naked Gun" UK Premiere at Cineworld Leicester Square on July 22, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by) Liam Neeson has revealed he asked for his skirt he wears in the new Naked Gun film to be 'shorter' during an interview with 'life-long friend' and co-star Pamela Anderson. The stars of the upcoming police comedy spoof reboot interviewed one another for People magazine in the lead up to the film's release on the silver screen on August 1. In the film Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult, Neeson plays the son of Leslie Nielsen's character Frank Drebin in the movie that also stars Baywatch actor Anderson as the female lead Beth. In an interview with People magazine, the pair quizzed each other on everything from first impressions they had of each other, to advice they gave their children who have also entered the acting industry. 'I thought, oh my God, she is so easy on the eyes,' admitted the Ballymena man of his first impressions of his co-star Anderson. 'I was really taken with your 'there-ness', you were absolutely there. There was no 'hi' I knew we had a chemistry from very early on. 'Yeah, we definitely had a chemistry, right away, I was just curious as to where it was going to take us in the film,' agreed Anderson. 'So, it was really a nice start. But I always feel like I have to get better at just my confidence and getting into a room and thinking, 'Oh no, I can be here. I can be here'. 'But he [Neeson] really put me at ease. Then we were off to the races.' The promotional trailer for the film shows Neeson in a school-girl uniform – which when questioned by his co-star, the 73-year-old revealed; 'yes, I asked for my skirt to be shorter'. Liam Neeson in The Naked Gun 'That's very sensitive, Pamela,' joked Neeson. 'Our first week we were in this bank, a real bank that we had access to. Yes, I was dressed in a school uniform. Just another day. 'We rehearsed the fight scenes, a silly fight scene. Yes, I asked for my skirt to be shorter. 'Which surprised me because my legs, I hate showing them. When I was a boxer as a kid, I'd go out, ding ding ding. I thought, 'they are looking at my legs'. Seriously I hated them.' A follow-up question from Neeson asked what the most 'important piece of advice' she gave her sons, Brandon Thomas Lee and Dylan Jagger Lee, when they entered the film industry. 'I just tell them to think their own original thoughts and not somebody else's thoughts,' she said. 'That there is no perfect way or formula and to do it their way.' 'I have one son in the business. He's an actor, it's 'welcome to the club',' he said. 'It's a very tough profession. If you are lucky to have a physical one-on-one meeting with a potential director, a casting director for a part, and you don't get it, it's not because you're a lesser actor. 'Nor is it because your education at a certain school didn't fit their approval. You occupy space, you breathe air that isn't right for them. 'So, it's rejection, rejection, rejection, to get another audition, two auditions for different jobs. You have to get that mojo back again.' During the film the pair both have singing parts – something that Neeson said had the crew 'glued' as they watched. Asking his co-star if she had 'nerves scatting with the jazz band' in the film, Anderson went into some detail about her past in Broadway. 'I love jazz I play saxophone. I have scatted a few times in the past, so when I read the script, I just thought it was meant to be,' said the 58-year-old. 'Who else can do this?' I was in eighth grade [when she scatted for the first time] I was the only one brave enough to do it. 'But I really had fun with it, I loved the scat, it was scripted it wasn't just improv,' she said. 'I remember the reaction on set, everybody was just glued, it was terrific. I was very touched by the song,' replied Neeson, who also sang in the song.
