Iowa hires McCollum, who swept Missouri Valley titles and won NCAA game in his one season at Drake
Ben McCollum, who led Drake's dominating run through the Missouri Valley Conference and a win in the NCAA Tournament in his only season with the Bulldogs, was named head coach at Iowa on Monday.
Iowa spokesman Matt Weitzel confirmed McCollum's hiring 10 days after athletic director Beth Goetz fired Fran McCaffery and two days after McCollum wrapped up a 31-4 season with a loss to Texas Tech in the second round of the West Regional.
McCollum takes over for McCaffery, who was fired after the Hawkeyes went 17-16 and had their lowest Big Ten regular-season finish in seven years. Iowa also has seen a steep decline in attendance the last two years.
The 43-year-old McCollum's ties to the Hawkeye State run deep. He was born in Iowa City, raised in Storm Lake and played junior college basketball in Mason City.
When he left the state, he didn't go far. He finished his college playing days at Northwest Missouri State and was an assistant at Emporia State in Kansas. He went back to Northwest Missouri in 2008 for his first head coaching job and won four Division II national championships in 15 seasons.
With four Northwest Missouri players heading to Drake with McCollum, the Bulldogs became one of the top stories in college basketball this season. They were dubbed 'Division II Drake' by some, a moniker that only served to motivate the team.
All four of the Northwest Missouri transfers were starters and one of them, Bennett Stirtz, led the Missouri Valley in scoring and was named conference player of the year and most outstanding player of the MVC Tournament.
The Bulldogs were picked fifth in the 12-team Valley and received no first-place votes. They ended up winning the regular-season championship by two games with 17 conference wins, their most ever. Then they won the Valley tournament to run their overall win total to a school-record 30 in 33 games.
Next was a 67-57 win over Missouri in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
McCollum coaches a grinding style. The Bulldogs' tempo was slowest in the nation. Offensive rebounding is emphasized. The defense allows 58.4 points per game, fewest in the nation. Just over 1 in 5 opponent possessions ends with a turnover.
'Death by a thousand paper cuts,' McCollum called his system.
The Bulldogs knocked off Miami, Vanderbilt and Kansas State on their way to a 12-0 start. Drake dropped back-to-back games before reeling off 11 straight MVC wins.
McCaffery was Iowa's all-time wins leader and, at 15 years, the longest-tenured coach in program history. The Hawkeyes dropped seven of nine games in February and didn't qualify for the Big Ten Tournament until the last day of the regular season.
The program has struggled to attract elite talent because of its shallow pool of funds for name, image and likeness compensation.
Since McCaffery's firing, seven players have announced they would enter the transfer portal.
Iowa's men were 10th in the Big Ten in average paid attendance this season, at 9,161 per game, though actual crowds appeared significantly less. That's an 8% drop from last season and 26% drop from 2022-23.

Disappointed Ciraldo threatens to swing axe at Dogs
Cameron Ciraldo has threatened to swing the axe on hot-and-cold Canterbury, questioning some of his players' intensity and preparation on the run to the NRL finals. The Bulldogs' consistency from earlier in the season is eluding them at just the wrong time, with Friday's 32-12 loss to the Sydney Roosters their second in three games. Canterbury were first on the ladder for 13 consecutive weeks earlier in the year but are now in an uphill battle to secure a top-two finish with three games to go before finals. On Friday, Easts completely dominated the Bulldogs after half-time. Naufahu Whyte, notably, smashed past four Bulldogs defenders for one of the softer tries the league's best defensive side have conceded this year. "When the intensity went up, a few guys didn't want to go with it," said frustrated coach Ciraldo. In part, he blamed his own training practices for a drop in consistency. "We've had consistency for three quarters of the year. The last month has been disappointing," he said. "I sort of blame myself there because we've got some guys carrying niggles and they just get through training instead of actually training. "I'm going to stop that. If you can't train, it sort of results in a performance like that." Recruits Marcelo Montoya and Sitili Tupouniua are expected to recover from respective neck and hamstring injuries in the coming weeks. Ciraldo warned there were plenty of candidates for game time if the rigours of the long season were weighing on incumbent players. "We've got a couple of guys available from injury possibly next week or the week after," Ciraldo said. "We've got a deep squad. We've got a lot of good players that didn't play tonight. If we don't want to prepare to win, then I'll put someone in who does want to prepare to win." The Bulldogs have one of the hardest fixture lists to finish the regular season as the only team playing three opponents that began round-24 in the top eight. Canterbury captain Stephen Crichton, a three-time premiership winner, said the timing was right for Ciraldo to call the Bulldogs out. "We're coming into the serious part of the year," he said. "If you don't get your mindset right coming into these big games, you're going to be sitting behind the posts most of the time (after conceding tries). "You'd rather have this conversation now than leading into finals."

Florida basketball coach Todd Golden ranked No. 10 in Top 50 coaches list. Is that too low?
College Basketball Report released its Top 50 coaches in college basketball on August 14. Coming off leading Florida basketball to a national championship, Florida basketball coach Todd Golden cracked the top 10 of the list at No. 10. Overall, Golden is 76-33 in three seasons with the Florida Gators, with two NCAA Tournament appearances. At 39 years old last April, Golden became the youngest coach since the late Jim Valvano in 1983 to win a national title when he guided UF to a dramatic 65-63 win over Houston in the 2025 national title game. Of the nine coaches ranked ahead of Golden, only three have won national championships. Dan Hurley, ranked No. 1, led UConn to back-to-back national titles in 2023 and 2024. Rick Pitino, at No. 4, led Kentucky to a national title in 1996 and Louisville to a national championship in 2013. Bill Self, at No. 6, led Kansas to national titles in 2008 and 2022. Nate Oats, who led Alabama to one Final Four in 2024 and Bruce Pearl, who led Auburn to Final Fours in 2019 and 2025, are ranked seventh and eighth. Golden is 4-2 head-to-head against Oats and 3-2 head-to-head against Pearl. Given those results, Golden should probably be ranked at least ahead of Oats, if not Pearl, and closer to the top five range. Of course, Golden will get a chance to further cement his status as an elite coach in 2025-26, with starting foward Alex Condon, starting center Rueben Chinyelu and star sixth man Thomas Haugh returning in an effort to defend UF's national title.
