Man in Rustenburg court tomorrow over NWU student killing
He was arrested after handing himself over to police following the discovery of the body of 21-year-old Onalenna Selebogo, a third-year education student at North-West University's Mahikeng Campus.
According to SA News, she was found murdered on August 3 in a Rustenburg flat, wrapped in bedsheets with multiple stab wounds to the neck.
The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities has urged communities to act as custodians of change by preventing and reporting any form of violence, and supporting survivors of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
The department condemned Selebogo's killing, describing it as an 'appalling reminder that the fight for women's safety and dignity remains far from being won'.
'The fact that these hideous acts of violence occurred during Women's Month, when the nation is honouring and celebrating women's courage, resilience and contribution to our democracy, makes it even more unacceptable,' the department said.
The department called on law enforcement agencies to act with urgency and transparency to ensure those responsible for Selebogo's death are brought to justice without delay.
It also urged communities to break the silence that allows GBVF to thrive, and called on men across the nation to take responsibility by challenging harmful norms and becoming active partners in creating a society free from violence.
'These words are not just ceremonial, they are a call to action, justice, and change to every sector in public; private business, faith-based organisations, traditional leaders, and the media must mobilise resources and platforms to strengthen prevention efforts and promote awareness on GBVF,' the department said.
Teach young boys to protect and respect women
Speaking at the National Women's Day commemoration in Tzaneen, Limpopo, last Saturday, President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the high levels of GBVF in the country.
The president called on all South Africans to build a society where 'we teach young boys that women are to be protected, and respected, and not abused'.
He also urged that young boys be taught to understand the meaning of consent in sexual relationships, and not to use money and influence to engage in predatory behaviour towards women.
The president added that South Africa must become 'a society that does not condone the ill-treatment of women and children under the guise of culture or tradition'.

Gauteng learner, 6, dies in freak scholar transport accident
The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed the death of a six-year-old Grade R girl learner from Letsatsing Primary Mine School in Carletonville, following a freak scholar transport accident. The accident happened on Friday, 15 August. Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said following the accident, the minor was rushed to Carletonville Hospital for medical attention, where she sadly passed away later that afternoon due to serious injuries. Mabona said law enforcement agencies are investigating the circumstances surrounding this accident. 'The psycho-social support unit will be made available to the school community, bereaved family, learners, and educators,' he said. The department's officials were expected to visit the family on Sunday, 17 August, to convey their condolences accordingly. Meanwhile, the Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, school community, and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss. Santaco denies enforcing limits on number of passengers private cars are allowed to carry
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) is denying claims that it allegedly instructed South Africans not to use private vehicles or carry their families, labelling the reports false and misleading. This comes after the circulation of posts, including pictures and videos, alleging that taxi drivers were stopping and harassing motorists on the roads. The taxi operators were allegedly restricting private car operators from carrying their family members. In some provinces, parents and teachers are also allegedly being restricted from transporting their children to school. 'We wish to place it on record that Santaco has never issued such a communication and has never imposed any mode of transport on the public. Any individual making such claims is not, and has never been, speaking on behalf of the council,' said Santaco spokesperson Mmatshikhidi Rebecca Phala. Phala said the council strongly condemns these acts in the strongest terms. 'Like all other paid-for transport services, taxi operations are voluntary and remain a choice available to commuters. For clarity, only law enforcement authorities hold the legal mandate to enforce regulations relating to transport in South Africa. We encourage members of the public to report any incidents of harassment or unlawful enforcement directly to law enforcement agencies,' Phala said. Santaco KZN also denied the claims. 'Santaco is not a law enforcement agency and does not have authority to impose or enforce regulations on private vehicles or motorists. Santaco is a recognised structure, as affirmed by the 2020 National Taxi Lekgotla, mandated to oversee and co-ordinate affiliated taxi structures. These include mini bus taxis, metered taxis and independent scholar transport operators. Our role is to promote a safe, reliable and regulated public transport service within the framework of the South African constitution and applicable legislation,' it said. Last Wednesday, an E-hailing driver died after being attacked by men who shot him and set him alight inside his car at Maponya Mall.
