Hillsborough leaders vote to end Cross Bay Ferry service early

Yahoo16-04-2025
The Brief
Cross Bay Ferry service is set to end on April 30 after a vote on Wednesday by Hillsborough County commissioners.
The company that operates the ferry recently announced plans to switch to a lower vessel, leading to a contract dispute.
Officials on both sides of Tampa Bay are weighing potential replacement options.
TAMPA, Fla. - Hillsborough County commissioners voted on Wednesday to end Cross Bay Ferry service several months early over a contract dispute.
The backstory
This was supposed to be the first year the Cross Bay Ferry would offer year-round service, but that plan recently hit a snag.
Hillsborough County officials recently learned that HMS Ferries planned to switch to a much slower ferry – one that would take two hours to make each individual trip between Tampa and St. Petersburg.
PREVIOUS: Cross Bay Ferry to end early over contract issues
Officials in Tampa, Hillsborough County and St. Pete have said they're not onboard with that plan. Hillsborough County gave HMS, which has operated the Cross Bay Ferry since it launched in 2017, until April 3 to find a vessel that meets the contractual requirements, or the contract would be terminated effective April 30.
HMS responded to the county's later, saying it's not able to provide a faster ferry and is willing to terminate the agreement early.
By the numbers
The ferry often sells out on weekends and for special events, and set a record last year with more than 72,000 riders.
What's next
As for a potential replacement, the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority has already been working to determine whether it can purchase and operate a ferry on its own beginning in October. That plan is still in the works.
PSTA also hopes Hillsborough County will contribute several million dollars by way of an unused federal grant, but it's not clear whether that will be approved.

If You'd Invested $10,000 in Apple Stock 30 Years Ago, Here's How Much You'd Have Today

Key Points Apple has a moat in its ecosystem of consumer products. You only need one long-term winner to lead to fantastic results for your portfolio. Dividends can add a lot to total return over time. 10 stocks we like better than Apple › Every investor dreams of finding that one stock that can skyrocket and turn them into a millionaire. Those are pretty hard to find, and that's why it's so important to diversify. You don't know which stocks will deliver the greatest returns in 30 years. But if you carefully choose an assortment of stocks and sit on them for a few decades, you could end up with returns like Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL). Products people love Apple makes products people love. It has created an ecosystem of users who buy all of its products, like laptops, iPhones, and iPads, and upgrade to newer models as they become available. Apple's products come with a differentiated experience that makes it stand out from the many other device companies on the market, and Apple has catapulted to one of the largest companies in the world. It was the most highly valued company in the world for years before recently falling into third place, and it's the fourth-largest company in the U.S. by sales. If you had recognized Apple's potential 30 years ago and invested $10,000 in its stock, you'd be a multimillionaire today with about $6.9 million if you'd reinvested dividends. It's unlikely that Apple can achieve the same growth over the next 30 years, although it can still offer value to investors as an industry giant with a strong moat. But I want to underscore a few lessons investors can apply to other stocks. One is that in 1995, Apple had already been a public company for several years. You don't have to invest in public companies in their first days of trading to make your money work for you. Another is to notice how much money dividends add to the total -- the dividend adds more than $1 million to the total here, though Apple's current dividend yield is under 1%. Investors should look to diversify, and know that one huge winner can wipe out losses from their losers. Do the experts think Apple is a buy right now? Masimo sues US Customs over approval of Apple Watch imports

By Blake Brittain WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Medical monitoring technology company Masimo sued U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Wednesday over a decision by the agency that allowed Apple to import Apple Watches with blood-oxygen reading technology during a patent dispute between the companies. Masimo said in the lawsuit in Washington, D.C., federal court that Customs improperly determined that Apple can import watches with pulse oximetry technology, reversing its own decision from last year without notifying Masimo. Masimo told the court that it learned of the agency's August 1 decision only after Apple announced it would reintroduce blood-oxygen reading to its watches last week. Spokespeople for Apple and Customs did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A Masimo spokesperson declined to comment. Irvine, California-based Masimo has accused Apple of hiring away its employees and stealing its pulse oximetry technology to use in its Apple Watches. Masimo has separately sued Apple for patent infringement and trade secret theft in ongoing federal court cases. Masimo convinced the U.S. International Trade Commission to block imports of Apple's Series 9 and Ultra 2 smartwatches in 2023 based on a determination that Apple's technology for reading blood oxygen levels infringed Masimo's patents. Apple has continued to sell Customs-approved redesigned watches without pulse oximetry since the ITC's decision. Apple said on Aug. 14 that it would reintroduce its smartwatches' blood-oxygen reading capabilities with approval from Customs. Masimo said the agency's decision to approve the watches without input from Masimo or any "meaningful justification" deprived the company of its rights. "CBP's function is to enforce ITC exclusion orders, not to create loopholes that render them ineffective," Masimo said. Masimo asked the Washington court to halt the agency's ruling and continue to block Apple from selling watches with the blood-oxygen feature.
