Enzo Maresca issues Nicolas Jackson statement as Chelsea open door to transfer exit

Daily Mirrora day ago
Enzo Maresca has opened the door for the sale of Nicolas Jackson in this transfer window. The Senegal striker is a target for Newcastle if they sell Alexander Isak this summer.
New FIFA World Club Cup winners Chelsea have signed Joao Pedro and Liam Delap to bolster their attacking ranks. Jackson was signed for £32m from Villareal in June 2023 and penned a contract extension until 2033 last season. But the Blues are ready to sell if any club makes a big offer.
Maresca said: 'Nico is okay. He's okay. When the transfer window is open, unfortunately or fortunately, anything can happen. This also involves Nico's situation. At the moment we also had two strikers arrive, both of them in the USA, Joao (Pedro) and Liam (Delap). So we will see what happens.'
But Chelsea could be forced into the market after England defender Levi Colwill suffered an undisclosed muscle injury in the club's first training session back on Monday.
The Blues academy product made 47 appearances for club and country last season, including in the Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup finals.
'We had a problem the last two days with Levi Colwill, that we don't know how long he is going to be out,' said the Italian head coach.
"So for us, we will see, hopefully not too long, but for sure it's a problem for us. We need to wait, we don't know yet.
'It was in the first session on Monday, just in the last minutes of the session. He felt something and, as I said, we need to wait and then we see.'
Asked if the injury means Chelsea will have to buy cover this summer, Maresca added: 'It depends. We need to wait and then we see.
"But, as I said, we know each other from last year and, you know in our way, how important Levi has been. I spoke with him yesterday and I told him that if we achieve what we achieved last year, it is also because of him - and he was a main player for us.'

The Millie Bright x MAAREE Empower Sports Bra features artwork inspired by Bright's tattoos, with symbols of strength, identity and growth. Inscribed on its racerback is the phrase Dream Big, a personal motto of the Chelsea captain. The cobalt blue bra also has gold Millie Bright and MAAREE logos, celebrating Bright's many sporting achievements which include winning the UEFA Women's EURO in 2022 with the Lionesses, eight FA WSL titles and six Women's FA Cups. Bright joined MAAREE as an investor and ambassador at the start of 2025, after spending her career struggling with pain and discomfort caused by ill-fitting sports bras. After hearing about the brand, she contacted its founder Mari Thomas-Welland who worked with her to find her perfect fit. Along with the bra, the range will also include a t-shirt and a cap, both in the same colours and style as the bra. The range will be unveiled in person by Millie Bright at a special event at Style of our Own (SOOO) in London on Thursday 7 August. Millie Bright said: 'I designed this collection with MAAREE as not only are they the best brand, but we align on the same values and believe in the same things when it comes to women and sport. 'Dream Big is an important motto for me. To dream it, you have to see it and visibility in women's sport is improving so much which is having a big impact. It shows women that things are possible, you can create or wear something that makes you feel powerful, brave and determined. 'This collection is really personal to me. It reflects what is important to me and has allowed me to achieve what I have so far in my career. I'm really proud of it and I can't wait to showcase it.' Mari Thomas-Welland said: 'We're really pleased to bring this collection out with Millie. She is the perfect ambassador for us and represents just what our brand is about, which is supporting and empowering women. 'This has been an enjoyable, creative process and we wanted Millie to have a lot of input. This collection is for all women, we wanted to build the message around that and it has evolved in an authentic way. 'It's been a really exciting year for us so far as a business, just as women's sport is going from strength to strength. Shearer hails Newcastle's summer transfer window as disappointing.

The Magpies' legendary striker lambasted his former club's transfer policy as he admitted he was not naive in thinking their current number nine would stay at the club. Isak had stopped training with Newcastle in an attempt to force a move to Liverpool but returned after the bid from the reigning Premier League champions was turned down. 'From a Newcastle point of view, it's been a really disappointing summer up to now,' said Shearer. The all-time Premier League record goalscorer was speaking at the launch of the new Topps Premier League 2026 which features players from all 20 clubs in the league in their 2025/26 kits at the Fanatics Collectibles flagship store on Thursday . (Image: Topps) 'It would be ideal [if Isak stayed], but I'm not naive enough to know that these things happen in football, it's going on with Newcastle and it's not a nice situation for him to deal with. 'But if it's impossible to talk him around and he hasn't made his mind up, then they have to get someone in before they can let him go. 'So it's a matter of sitting and waiting and sitting. We don't know the full picture. 'Having said that, they've signed Anthony Elanga and I'm pretty sure they'll get more in.' Shearer's former club, for whom he scored 148 Premier League goals, had hoped to replace Isak with RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko but were beaten to that signing by Manchester United. After leaving Blackburn Rovers in 1996, Shearer had been faced with the same choice between the Magpies and the Red Devils but made the opposite decision to Sesko. The Premier League legend, however, does not blame the 22-year-old for his choice to move to Manchester. 'That's his choice. He's chosen to go to a club who finished 15th last year and are not in Europe this year,' he said. 'It's a lot of money. I watched him a few times last year. There's definitely room for improvement, which I'm sure he will. But good luck.' But despite his disappointment at Newcastle's expeditions into the transfer market, Shearer still found plenty to look forward to about the new Premier League season and potential new faces. 'The signings at Liverpool have been really interesting - a right-back, left-back. [Florian] Wirtz is another one and [Hugo] Ekitike is another one,' he highlighted. 'And [Viktor] Gyokeres at Arsenal - it will be interesting to see how he goes after blowing the Portuguese league wide open in terms of the goals. The goals that he scored were phenomenal. Whether we can do that [in the Premier League] remains to be seen. 'There are so many intriguing bits to look forward to.' The all-time Premier League record goalscorer was speaking at the launch of the new Topps Premier League 2026 which features players from all 20 clubs in the league in their 2025/26 kits at the Fanatics Collectibles flagship store on Thursday . He was joined by other legends such as Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand to celebrate the new stand-alone range that features legends and current stars, with an extensive parallel programme and more genuine player autograph cardss than ever before. And it brought a moment of nostalgia for the star who remembered the excitement of collecting the cards as a youngster. 'Obviously [collecting for] all the World Cups and Euros comes to mind,' recalled Shearer. 'It's pretty addictive, isn't it? Once you get one, you want to open another and another and another and it's nonstop. So yeah, I loved it. 'I just remember thinking, I've opened one packet and you've got to open another one straight away. That was my memory of doing it.' Marking the launch of the Topps Premier League 2025-26 collection were football icons Alan Shearer, Steven Gerrard, and Rio Ferdinand, joined by Jermaine Defoe, Joleon Lescott, Theo Walcott and Tosin Adarabioyo, alongside Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin in a star-studded celebration.

Jamie Carragher says Chelsea transfer decision will cost them shot at title

Jamie Carragher says Chelsea will never win the Premier League until they sign a new goalkeeper to replace Robert Sanchez. A number of pundits have named Chelsea as dark horses to win the title next season after the Blues' encouraging form over the past six months. Chelsea qualified for the Champions League on the final day of the season while winning the Conference League. During the off-season, Chelsea won the controversial Club World Cup. The big-spending west Londoners have bolstered Enzo Maresca's squad this summer with a number of new signings, including Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Jorrel Hato. Chelsea look set to complete more business before the transfer deadline as they pursue RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons and Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. Carragher doubts Chelsea's heavy spending will result in a Premier League trophy until they sign a new goalkeeper to replace error-prone Sanchez. Chelsea were in talks to sign France No. 1 Mike Maignan earlier in the summer but talks with AC Milan broke down. Speaking on The Overlap, ex-Liverpool and England defender Carragher said: 'Man United started winning league titles after they signed Peter Schmeichel. 'I think of Everton as a kid and Neville Southall. Man City changed the keeper and started winning the league. We brought in Alisson and started winning the league. Chelsea started winning the league when they signed Petr Cech. 'That's why Chelsea can't win the league. No matter what Chelsea do or how much they spend, they can't win the league because they haven't got a goalkeeper to win the league.' Discussing the importance of goalkeepers, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes added: 'I don't think enough is mentioned about goalkeepers. 'Look at the best team last year, they had the best goalkeeper in the world. Ederson worries me for Man City and I'm not sure James Trafford is the answer. 'Ball-playing is a big part of it these days but I think it's still secondary, you still need to be a presence in the goal. 'I look at Alisson and I'm not sure how to score past him, I don't think that with any other goalkeeper in the Premier League.' Jamie Gittens – £48m from Borussia Dortmund Joao Pedro – £55m from Brighton Liam Delap – £30m from Ipswich Town Mamadou Sarr – £12m from Lyon Dario Essugo – £18m from Sporting CP Estevao Willian – £29m from Palmeiras Kendry Paez – £17m from Independiente del Valle Jorrol Hato – £37m from Ajax While questioning Chelsea's No. 1, Carragher also raised doubts over the club's summer signings. 'When I look at Chelsea, I think about what you did in the Club World Cup – everyone wanted to win it,' he said. 'Real Madrid really wanted to win, PSG did, and so did Manchester City, all those that we class as the best teams. 'So I do think it's a big thing and it will help build a connection between Enzo Maresca and the supporters, which wasn't really there last season. More Trending 'I'm not sure it'll push Chelsea any closer to the title though. When Chelsea do business, over the last couple of years, it feels like a lot of players are changing without anyone really lifting the level. 'I know Cole Palmer has been amazing, but all your wingers feel the same. 'A perfect example is [Jamie] Gittens coming in and Madueke leaving – there is no elevation, and I see that with a lot of positions at Chelsea.'
