Which two former Tar Heels is Drake Powell joining on the Brooklyn Nets?
Can this Tar Heel trio lead the Brooklyn Nets back to success?
As Wednesday's First Round of the 2025 NBA Draft reach the 20s, Drake Powell waited to hear his name called. With the 22nd overall pick, the Atlanta Hawks selected Powell and traded him to the Brooklyn Nets.
Once considered a lottery pick before the 2024-2025 college basketball season, Powell fought his way into the starting lineup after a string of impressive performances. By the 2025 portion, Powell was a mainstay in UNC's starting lineup, providing lockdown defense and a quick scoring punch tough to find elsewhere on the roster.
Regardless of whether you think Powell would benefit from another year at North Carolina, he deserves his NBA Draft spot.
Powell won't be the only former Tar Heel in Brooklyn, as he joins Cameron Johnson (2017-2019) and Day'Ron Sharpe (2020-2021). The UNC trio will try and help the Nets make an NBA Playoffs appearance for the first time in three seasons, when the Philadelphia 76ers won via a 4-0, First Round sweep.
Powell started 27 of 40 games he appeared in during his lone season at North Carolina, averaging 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. Powell will now compete with Ziaire Williams for minutes at small forward, though Brooklyn can also opt to utilize Powell at shooting guard – or a small power forward.
Johnson is quickly turning into one of the NBA's budding young stars, coming off a season in which he averaged a trio of career highs: 18.8 points, 3.4 assists and 31.6 minutes per game. In Chapel Hill, Johnson was part of Tar Heel teams that made two NCAA Tournament appearances: once in the Second Round, followed by a trip to the Sweet 16.
Though he only started two of the 50 games he appeared in, Sharpe is also coming off a season with career bests of 7.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game. Sharpe's lone season in Chapel Hill ended in a first-round NCAA Tournament exit, when Wisconsin beat UNC 85-62.

Toronto Raptors fire president Masai Ujiri one day after NBA Draft
June 27 (UPI) -- The Toronto Raptors fired president and vice chairman Masai Ujiri, the franchise announced Friday, less than 12 hours after the 2025 NBA Draft and days before the start of free agency. Ujiri joined the Raptors as general manager in 2013 and helped them win their first and only title in 2019. The Raptors went 30-52 in 2024-25, failing to make the playoffs for the fourth time in five years. "During his 13 seasons with the Raptors, Masai has helped transform the organization on the court and has been an inspirational leader off it," said Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment president and CEO Keith Pelley said in a news release. "He brought an NBA Championship to Toronto and urged us to believe in this city, and ourselves. "We are grateful for all he has done and wish him and his family the very best. As we plan for the franchise's future, and its return to the NBA playoffs, a search for the successor as president of the Raptors, led by CAA executive search, will begin immediately." Ujiri, 54, previously worked as a scout for the Orlando Magic and Denver Nuggets. He was hired for the first time as a general manager in 2010 by the Nuggets and went on to win Executive of the Year honors in 2013 before taking the Raptors job. The Raptors said Friday that general manager Bobby Webster and other key personnel will remain in place with extensions. "We are confident that the Raptors organization, under the guidance of Bobby and his team, is in a great place," Pelley said. "They have a plan in place for next season and beyond as the team continues its rebuild, and we have confidence in their ability to execute and ultimately, to excel. We feel the team is in a strong, stable place, and we believe the addition of a new president will continue to move the Raptors forward, towards our next NBA championship." The Raptors selected former South Carolina forward Collin Murray-Boyles with the No. 9 overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday in Brooklyn. They picked up former Florida guard Alijah Martin in Thursday's second round.

Warner Bros. Discovery's TNT Sports to Stop Producing Content for NBA TV at End of 2024-25 Season
Warner Bros. Discovery's partnership with NBA TV is coming to an end as TNT Sports will no longer produce content for the basketball league's cable network, an individual familiar with the matter tells TheWrap. After managing NBA TV's operations for nearly two decades, TNT Sports chairman and CEO Luis Silberwasser said Warner and the NBA 'mutually decided to part ways at the end of the 2024-25 season.' 'We made several proposals to continue to provide services and operate the NBA TV network and related digital assets. However, we were unable to agree on a path forward that recognized the value of our expertise, quality content and operational excellence that our fans and partners have come to expect from TNT Sports,' Silberwasser said in a memo to staff. 'We will work closely with the NBA on a transition plan for the league to assume the responsibility of programming and operating NBA TV and which will be effective Oct. 1.' A spokesperson for the NBA did not immediately return TheWrap's request for comment. The end of the collaboration, which first began in 2008, comes after the NBA struck new media rights deals with Amazon, NBCUniversal/Peacock and Disney's ESPN/ABC last year. TNT Sports had been a national rights holder with the NBA since 1984. However, the NBA's relationship with TNT Sports will continue. After settling WBD's rights dispute with the league, TNT Sports and its portfolio of brands were given a global license to create, produce and distribute new and existing NBA content across its platforms. The agreement includes expanded global content and highlight rights for TNT Sports, Bleacher Report and House of Highlights, with the ability to produce and distribute NBA content across the WBD portfolio, along with promotion, sales and creative commitments across both NBA and WBD platforms. It also gives WBD international rights to NBA games in Northern Europe and Latin America, excluding Mexico and Brazil. Additionally, TNT is licensing its 'Inside the NBA' show to ESPN. The news also comes as Warner Bros. Discovery is gearing up to separate its global linear networks business from its streaming and studios business in 2026. Global Networks will include CNN, TNT Sports in the U.S., Discovery, top free-to-air channels across Europe, Discovery+ and Bleacher Report (B/R). It will retain a 20% stake in the studios and streaming business to help the company deleverage and is expected to take the majority of WBD's roughly $37 billion in gross debt. The Studios & Streaming business will include Warner Bros. Television Group, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO and HBO Max, Warner Bros. Games, Tours, Retail and Experiences, as well as studio production facilities in Burbank and Leavesden. 'The U.S. sports rights will reside at the Global Networks, and its management team will determine how best to monetize the streaming and digital rights over time,' WBD chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels told investors on a call earlier this month. 'Internationally, sports will largely coexist, both on linear and streaming, as they do today.' 'Inside the U.S., sports have been less critical,' WBD CEO David Zaslav added. 'It's viewed, but it hasn't been a real driver for us. So it will continue to be on HBO Max, but the Global Networks business will evaluate over time where the best place for that is.'
