Ukraine moves to nationalize Ferrexpo's mining subsidiary
The move comes amid Ukraine's broader crackdown on assets linked to sanctioned oligarchs during wartime. Ferrexpo is one of the country's largest iron ore exporters and employers in central Ukraine.
The lawsuit seeks to transfer 49.5% of Poltava Mining and its assets to state ownership, including 541 properties, 172 land plots, and over 2,300 railway cars with tracks.
Half of Ferrexpo's shares belong to Zhevago, who was arrested in absentia in July 2024 on embezzlement charges of Hr 1.4 billion ($33.6 million) in a case involving Finance and Credit Bank.
Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) recently announced sanctions and criminal proceedings against against a number of Ukrainian businessmen and former high-ranking officials, including Zhevago.
Poltava Mining in February was also hit by a civil claim for Hr 157 billion ($3.78 billion) over illegal mining in Ukraine and the sale of waste products.
"Initial accusations on the illegal sale of waste products have transformed into accusations that FPM is illegally mining and selling subsoil, which is said to have caused damage to the environment," Ferrexpo said in a statement on Feb. 4.
The company denied the allegations, declaring its intentions to defend its position in the Ukrainian courts. The lawsuit does not affect the company's operations, the statement said.
Earlier, in September 2024, the SBI sent a case to court against seven Poltava Mining officials for illegal mining and sale of minerals worth Hr 370 million ($8.9 million).

During a special operation, employees of the Security Service of Ukraine eliminated agents of the Russian special services who, on the instructions of the FSB of the Russian Federation, carried out the murder of the SBU colonel in Kyiv. "The special operation to find the killers of the Ukrainian defender was personally led by the head of the SBU, Lieutenant General Vasyl Malyuk. Russia warns against targeting North Korea
July 12 (UPI) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov traveled to North Korea on Friday to meet with his North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and others during a three-day visit. He said Moscow respects North Korea's efforts to develop nuclear arms by using its own scientists amid recent military exercises involving the U.S., South Korean and Japanese forces, according to CNN. The U.S. and its South Korean and Japanese allies conducted a joint aerial training operation on the Korean Peninsula on Friday. Lavrov warned the United States and its regional allies against targeting North Korea and Russia, Newsweek reported on Saturday. "No one is considering using force against North Korea despite the military buildup around the country by the United States, South Korea and Japan," Lavrov said of the joint military exercise. "We respect North Korea's aspirations and understand the reasons why it is pursuing a nuclear development," Lavrov said. He said Moscow is aware that President Donald Trump recently expressed support for resuming talks with North Korea at the highest level. "We exchanged views on the situation surrounding the Ukrainian crisis," Lavrov told Russian state media outlet TASS. "Our Korean friends confirmed their firm support of all the objectives of the special military operation," he said of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. North Korea's Foreign Ministry earlier this week invitedLavrov to visit Pyongyang, which is preparing to deploy between 25,000 and 30,000 soldiers for Russia's continued invasion of Ukraine. Lavrov says North Korea affirms Russian war goals in Ukraine
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said North Korea has affirmed its 'clear support' for Russia's war in Ukraine and for Kremlin leadership as he started a three-day visit to Pyongyang. The two heavily sanctioned nations are in constant contact, and more meetings between President Vladimir Putin and Leader Kim Jong Un are likely in the future, Lavrov said at a press conference after talks with his North Korean counterpart Choe Son Hui, according to the state-run Tass news service. Lavrov referenced the participation of North Korean troops in Russia's Kursk region, where Kremlin forces reversed last year's surprise incursion by Ukraine, calling it evidence of an 'invincible brotherhood' between the nations. Ukraine in June said it retains a sliver of territory in Kursk oblast, some 90 square kilometers (35 square miles). Russian authorities would facilitate an increase in tourist flows to North Korea from Russia, Lavrov said. North Korea opened the Wonsan‑Kalma coastal tourist area in June, with Kim presiding over the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Lavrov also said that Belarus, with Russia's backing, has invited North Korea to take part in the third conference on Eurasian security architecture, expected to be held in Minsk in October. Lavrov's visit to Pyongyang is part of 'the second round of strategic dialogue between the top diplomats,' Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday, according to Tass. Choe Son Hui met with Putin and Lavrov in November during a trip to Moscow. Before Pyongyang, Lavrov was in Kuala Lumpur, where he met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the gathering of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
