1.7 tonnes ‘beef' seized, 178 eateries & slaughterhouses raided, 196 arrested

Time of Indiaa day ago
Guwahati: Police have seized more than 1.7 tonnes of suspected beef during raids on hotels, restaurants, and slaughterhouses, and detained 196 people for violating the govt's prohibition on the beef public service and consumption in public spaces.
The crackdown has been underway across the state since Tuesday.
The enforcement was carried out under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, which restricts cattle slaughter and beef sales in regions predominantly inhabited by Hindu, Jain, and Sikh communities, as well as within a 5-km radius of temples or satras.
To reinforce this law, the state cabinet last year banned the serving of beef in any restaurant, hotel, public function, or public place.
Inspector general of police (law and order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh told PTI that authorities launched a statewide operation on Tuesday to investigate reported cases of unlawful cattle slaughter and unauthorised beef sales in restaurants.
Police said raids were carried out across 178 hotels, restaurants, and slaughterhouses in various districts of Assam over two days.
The crackdown has come after chief minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma
raised concern last month over illegal cattle slaughter during Eid celebrations in the state.
On June 20, Sarma emphasised strict enforcement of the Act across all districts to prevent the availability and consumption of beef near religious sites.

Delhi govt officer's home burgled while on vacation; cash, gold missing

'The homeowner immediately asked her to inspect the house along with their residential guard, Manish Kumar. On entering, they found one safe broken and cupboards open. He then directed the guard to call the police. A PCR call was made and police personnel later reached the spot,' it said. According to the FIR registered at the Tughlaq Road police station, the government officer had left for Spain and Italy for vacation with his family on June 13 and was scheduled to return to India on the night of June 29. Around 8.47 am that day, while he was at the Abu Dhabi airport in transit to Delhi, his house help, Janki, informed him over the phone that the main door of his residence was broken, the complaint read. New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI) Expensive jewellery, lakhs in cash and foreign currency were stolen from the central Delhi residence of a government officer while he was travelling abroad with his family, police said on Thursday. The officer and his family reached their house at 9.30 pm. Only then were the missing items confirmed. According to the complainant, the stolen items included two sets of gold bangles weighing around 115 grams, a diamond-studded bracelet of about 16 grams, a gold chain, a gold pendant, earrings, five gold rings, three additional sets of earrings, around Rs 4-5 lakh in cash and approximately 18,000 Thai Baht received as daily allowance on official trips. Most of the stolen jewellery belonged to the officer's wife, read the FIR. The officer said more valuables might be missing, which would be reported once identified. The complainant expressed suspicion that someone familiar with the house and its layout may have been involved in the theft, as only specific locations where cash and jewellery were kept appeared to have been targeted. Crime and forensic teams have inspected the house and CCTV footage from nearby locations is being examined, police said. PTI SGV BM KSS KSS This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. BJD demands apology as BJP MLA's remarks trigger political storm in Odisha, FIRs filed

Khatua, a lawmaker from Nilgiri assembly constituency in Balasore district, in a statement to certain television channels allegedly made 'derogatory' remarks on Samantasinghar's character. BJD's senior general secretary and spokesperson Lekhashree Samantasinghar has also drawn the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by tagging a letter in her X post. Bhubaneswar, Jul 3 (PTI) Ruling BJP MLA Santosh Khatua on Thursday courted controversy after allegedly making 'derogatory' remarks against a prominent woman BJD leader, prompting a strong backlash and a demand for an apology from Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and the saffron party. Meanwhile, at least three FIRs were filed at Nilgiri police station on Thursday evening by separate persons — including two women — accusing Khatua of making derogatory and objectionable remarks against the woman. 'Dear Modi Ji @narendramodi, Please listen to your MLA from Odisha talking about women politicians. This is true blood BJP neta giving true salute to women,' Samantasinghar wrote. 'I know you have very competent and intelligent Odia officers in @PMOIndia and Party. Please ask them to translate for you. After listening to it, we will see if you still have the motivation to talk about 'naari ka samman' or 'Operation Sindoor'.' 'Your promise for women will sound hollow if you fail to take action against such misogynistic elected representatives,' Samantasinghar stated. The controversy started from a press conference by Samantasinghar on Wednesday, where she accused Khatua of involvement in the killing of a tusker and theft of its tusks in Balasore's Nilgiri area on June 15. She also called the BJP MLA a 'thief' and a 'dacoit.' In what appeared to be a retaliatory statement made to certain television channels, Khatua allegedly made remarks on Samantasinghar's character, which were widely condemned. Attempts to contact the Nilgiri legislator failed as his phone remained switched off after the interview. Khatua's remarks, which went viral in social media, sparked a statewide outrage over the language used by a lawmaker. However, PTI could not independently verify the authenticity of the viral video. Leader of the opposition and BJD president Naveen Patnaik strongly denounced the BJP MLA's remark and called upon people to oppose such kind of words against a woman. 'Otherwise, as a state, we will fail before our daughters and mothers,' he said. In a post on X, Patnaik said: 'Attempting to assassinate a woman's character in public as a political response is a reflection of a sick mentality and is aimed at suppressing women's voices. It suggests that all women should remain silent. The most distressing aspect is the profound silence of BJP leaders.' He added, 'Not a single leader has come forward to condemn such reprehensible remarks or hold the MLA accountable. This behaviour and the silence of all concerned clearly reveal the stance of the ruling party in public.' At a press conference on Thursday, Pramila Mallik, the Opposition chief whip in the Odisha Assembly and BJD senior vice-president, condemned Khatua's comments and accused the BJP of obstructing women's participation in politics. 'BJP MLA Khatua has used extremely hateful, ugly, insulting and low-quality language towards Dr. Lekhashree Samantasinghar. If such language is used against a woman, it is never acceptable in a civilised society,' Mallik said. 'There are also women leaders and elected women representatives in the BJP. Has the BJP, which claims to be a party with a difference, trained its MLAs to speak this way about women?' she asked. Mallik further asserted that the remarks were not just personal but an affront to all women, and demanded a public apology. 'Khatua's remarks are not directed at one woman alone—they are an insult to the entire women fraternity. Therefore, CM Mohan Charan Majhi and the BJP must apologise to the women of Odisha,' she added. Responding to the allegations, BJP spokesperson Anil Biswal defended Khatua, claiming that he is being falsely implicated in the elephant poaching case. 'Nilgiri MLA is being falsely dragged into the elephant killing case. The BJD has done a PhD in making false allegations,' Biswal said in a statement. He added that four people have already been arrested in connection with the elephant deaths at Kuldiha Sanctuary, and those apprehended were habitual offenders. 'Even during the BJD's tenure, elephants were killed. This is nothing but a conspiracy to malign the image of BJP legislators,' he alleged. Tribal outfits to resume agitation over Nagaland job reservation policy on July 9

The CoRRP has maintained that the policy, which has been in place since 1977, no longer reflects the current socio-economic and educational scenario of various communities in the northeastern state. The push for review of Nagaland's job reservation policy intensified after the five major tribal bodies – Angami, Ao, Lotha, Rengma and Sumi – under the banner of the '5-Tribe CoRRP', submitted a joint memorandum to the state government. Kohima, Jun 3 (PTI) The Committee on Review Reservation Policy (CoRRP) – representing five major Naga tribes – on Thursday announced resumption of the second phase of agitation over its demand for review of the state's job reservation policy. During a meeting convened by Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton on June 3, the state government had assured the tribal bodies that a commission would be constituted to look into the matter by June 17. However, on Wednesday, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had said the commission's task is 'very detailed' and cannot deliver immediate results. He also stated that any reforms – be it in administration, reservations, or delimitations – should be carried out only after the national census, which is expected to begin in 2027. Unhappy with the state government's response, CoRRP announced that a sit-in protest will be held at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat in Kohima on July 9. This marks the second phase of their protest, which had been suspended since June 3. CoRRP member-secretary G K Zhimomi told PTI: 'It will be a one-day protest for now. We'll observe the government's response and take further steps accordingly.' PTI NBS RBT This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.
