Former Bucs TE after the 2022 season: 'I'm done with football'
Cameron Brate went from undrafted free agent to beloved franchise great. While the former Bucs tight end isn't going to be enshrined in Canton, Ohio, or even the Ring of Honor in Raymond James Stadium, he has carved out a place in the hearts of Bucs fans for his effort and reliability over his nine seasons with the team.
On a recent episode of Chris Long's Green Light Podcast, the veteran tight end was on and served as a guest for them. He discussed a variety of topics, but one of them was particularly enlightening: the 2022 season.
Speaking with teammate Rob Gronkowski on the podcast, Brate shared, "That was not a very fun year for the Buccaneers," said Brate when talking with Gronk about playing the 2022 season. "That year, like I think everyone got done with that year, and the building was like, 'Alright, I'm done with football.'"
After that season, both Brate and Tom Brady would eventually retire from football.
The team had some ups and downs in the previous offseason, from Bruce Arians retirement, to them limping into the playoffs, where they lost to the Dallas Cowboys in the first round. The team has been climbing its way out of mediocrity ever since sadly.

The Bucs have won the NFC South every year since 2021, and even when they were second in the division, they ended up winning the Super Bowl. The Falcons must step up and take that crown from them, and they must utilize all their weapons and step up on defense. John Harbaugh welcomed another Super Bowl-winning head coach to Ravens OTAs this offseason. Former Buccaneers and Raiders head coach Jon Gruden observed the team's workouts on Thursday and Friday this week. Harbaugh said that Gruden's outside view provided the team with valuable information. 'He loves football, he's a great football coach, great football mind,' Harbaugh said, via the team's website. 'He studied our team, gave us some insight — players, coaches, schemes, all of it. We didn't give him the playbook, we didn't give him a script either. You can only go so far. He studied us. Basically, the message was, 'If I was game planning against you on defense, what would I do, how would I attack you?' He didn't just stop there. He watched our offensive guys. He had something for each player. Very, very detailed.' Gruden has been out of coaching since being resigning from the Raiders in 2021 in the wake of the release of offensive emails, but said earlier this year that he still hopes to return to the sideline. That may not happen, but the Ravens may still benefit from his acumen this season.

Advertisement Color us confused. If there were a season for Baker to "fall apart," this one likely isn't where it will happen. Josh Grizzard is Baker's "new" offensive coordinator, but he was the passing game coordinator under Liam Coen last season, so it won't be entirely new for Mayfield. Plus, with the improvement on Irving, McMillan, and Godwin, hopefully back for more than seven games, and then we add in Egbuka. Will that mean he falls apart after a career-best season that saw him throw 41 touchdowns and 4,500 yards? Time will tell. However, we believe that if Mayfield does indeed "fall apart," Tampa Bay won't make the playoffs as division winners. Advertisement This nightmare scenario is a little odd, with Mayfield now having two full seasons of evidence to suggest that his decline might not be as rapid as most expect.
