DILG's Remulla urges LGUs to pass ordinances vs. 911 prank callers
"Dapat may ordinance ang lahat ng LGUs na may monetary fine, jail time basta prank call," Remulla said in a statement.
(All LGUs should have an ordinance providing monetary fines and jail time for prank callers.)
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said the E911 National Office reported that in 2024, close to 12 million calls were received and 60% were identified as "fraudulent, hoax, or prank calls."
Citing the Presidential Decree 1727, the DILG said individuals who maliciously spread false information may face imprisonment of up to five years, a fine of up to P40,000, or both.
Remulla warned the public that the new system will have tracking capabilities to quickly identify prank callers.
"May geofence at geo data kasi ang lahat ng tatawag. So kung tumawag ka at prank call ka, within five minutes, mahuhuli ka nila," Remulla said.
(Everyone who calls has a geofence and geo data. So if you call and it's a prank call, within five minutes, they'll catch you.)
Among the additional features of the national emergency hotline system are language-sensitive capabilities and push-to-talk over cellular technologies, which allow real-time coordination with over 1,000 police officers nationwide.
"Despite the technology we are using, we are doing very well. Pero sa bagong sistema natin, I think the PNP will have better response time, better quality of response," Remulla said.

"Ngayon, 34 ang LGU na may sariling 911. Tapos may sarili ang Crame. Ang gagawin natin, magkakaroon tayo ng unified system sa buong Pilipinas," he added.
(Now, 34 LGUs have their own 911. Then Camp Crame has its own. What we will do is have a unified system throughout the Philippines.)
Last Wednesday, PNP chief General Nicolas Torre III witnessed a simulation exercise of a 911 call, but the activity turned out to be a real-life police response to an emergency situation. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Torre vs. Baste: PNP chief accepts acting Davao mayor's fistfight challenge
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Nicolas Torre III on Wednesday accepted the challenge of Davao City Acting Mayor Baste Duterte for a fistfight. Torre said this could be in the form of a "charity boxing match." 'Ang una kong naisip, uy tamang-tama. Maraming kababayan natin ngayon ang nangangailangan ng tulong na naapektuhan ng bagyo at baha. Maybe, this is a very good time para sa isang charity boxing match,' Torre told reporters. (My first thought was, oh, that's good timing. Many of our countrymen are in need of help right now after being affected by the cyclone and floods. Maybe this is a very good time for a charity boxing match.) 'We can do it on Sunday sa Araneta. Actually, puwede. Seriously, it's okay. Sigurado maraming manonood nyan,' he added. (We can do it on Sunday at Araneta. Actually, we can. Seriously, it's okay. That's a good charity and at least Mayor Baste and I can help our countrymen who were affected by the storm in some way. I'm sure there will be many people watching.) In a vlog uploaded on Youtube on Sunday, Duterte mentioned Torre and challenged him for a fistfight. 'Kasi matapang ka lang naman you have the position. But then you're a coward,' Duterte said. (You're brave because you have the position. But if we fight, I know I can handle you. But then you're a coward.) —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Marcos defends Remulla's 'announcements'
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. defended DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla following criticisms related to his department's style of announcing class and work suspensions. When asked about this, Marcos told reporters covering his trip in Washington, DC, that he is "not a judge of literary style." 'As long as he gets the message across, that's what it's for. That's what all of these postings are for and get some information across," Marcos said. ''People criticize me for the way I speak, criticize him for the way he speaks. But that's the way he speaks,' he added. The President also explained that the task of announcing class suspension was given to Remulla to avoid the spread of fake information. "Which website do you consult? So, pagka ganito, basta't sinabi na, the SILG will make the announcement… Wala ng fake news. Iyon na 'yung katotohanan. Iyon na 'yung totoo,' explained Marcos. 'So that the dissemination of information is better. That is very simple." Apology Remulla has already apologized for the "humorous posts" of his department for the announcement of class and work suspensions with some netizens saying that they were insensitive. Remulla told GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita in an interview that he was not downplaying the struggle of the public and that he was just trying to lighten their mood. In a post on DILG's Facebook account on Tuesday, Remulla said, "Mga abangers, may inaabangan ba kayo? Mamaya na kain muna ko." (Guys, are you waiting for something? Later, I have to eat first.) Then, the DILG again published a post with Remulla saying, 'Mga abangers, sarap ng bogchi ko. Sa kabusugan ay nakaidlip nang sandali. Oh eto na inaabangan niyo!' (Guys, I had a delicious meal. I fell asleep for a while after being full. Oh, this is what you've been waiting for!) Dante, Emong Twelve people were reported dead due to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Crising and the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Wednesday. Bad weather on SONA? OCD says protocol will depend on Congress
''Of course, we will depend on the protocol ng Congress po if they will suspend iyong SONA. But kami po... we are closely coordinating with the PNP po na magkaroon tayo ng orderly conduct ng flow ng mga pupunta sa SONA,'' OCD's Raffy Alejandro said./File photo Office of Civil Defense (OCD) officer-in-charge Raffy Alejandro said Tuesday that the contingencies for President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr.'s State of the Nation Address next week would depend on Congress. At a Palace press briefing, Alejandro was asked for the contingency measures in case there will be inclement weather during the President's fourth SONA, which is scheduled on July 28 at the Batasang Pambansa compound in Quezon City. ''Of course, we will depend on the protocol ng Congress po if they will suspend iyong SONA. But kami po... we are closely coordinating with the PNP po na magkaroon tayo ng orderly conduct ng flow ng mga pupunta sa SONA,'' Alejandro said. (Of course, we will depend on the protocol of Congress if they will suspend SONA. But we are closely coordinating with the PNP so we can have an orderly conduct for those who will be attending the SONA.) ''So, kami po, ang mga areas na surrounding Congress ay hinahanda pa rin natin in case na magkaroon ng hindi magandang weather. So, in the event po na—or magkaroon ng suspension ng work or classes, tuluy-tuloy pa rin naman ang ating mga emergency responders na naka-standby in case na kailangan ng assistance during the SONA po,'' he added. (We are preparing the areas surrounding Congress in case there will be inclement weather. So, in the event that there will be suspension of work or classes, emergency responders are on standby in case they need assistance during the SONA.) Days before the SONA, several parts of the country are experiencing rains even after tropical cyclone Crising (international name: Wipha) left the Philippine Area of Responsibility last weekend. Classes and government work have been suspended at least until Wednesday in Metro Manila and some provinces in Luzon and the Visayas due to the effects of the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat). Earlier, Marcos directed the suspension of pre-SONA preparations and tasked government offices to focus and ensure the safety of the public amid the bad weather. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
