Traffic violators in dist rack up Rs 75 crore in unpaid fines
Kochi: Vehicle owners in Ernakulam owe a whopping Rs 75.27 crore in compounding amounts for traffic violations to the govt over the past five years. These unpaid fines are linked to 8,43,905 pending e-challans issued by the motor vehicles department (MVD) since the introduction of e-challans in the district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This pending amount is more than two-and-a-half times the Rs 28 crore collected by the MVD in 2024. In total, 13,30,072 e-challans were issued during the five-year period, but only 4,86,167 were settled after fines were paid. According to MVD officials, the main reason for this backlog is the reluctance of many vehicle owners to clear dues unless compelled—such as during ownership transfers or vehicle sales. "The number of violations continues to rise as more vehicles hit the road daily. New drivers and vehicle owners tend to commit more offences, but violations generally decline as they gain experience," he said. Repeat offences are a growing concern. Since these fines are often unpaid, the MVD is issuing notices, specifically targeting owners with more than 25 violations, in an effort to enforce payment. "The MVD has begun targeting offenders who have over 25 violations by serving them notices. "The problem we face is that many owners fail to register or update their mobile numbers with the RTO. By the time we trace them, their fines often add up to thousands of rupees due to repeated offences," another official said. Fines typically start small but double with each repetition. E-challans are issued to the registered mobile number of the vehicle owner once it is caught for a traffic rule violation. Most traffic violations are now captured by the MVD's AI cameras. In Ernakulam, over 50,000 violations are reported monthly, with nearly 40,000 detected by the 64 AI cameras installed on highways. The most common offences include driving without seatbelts, riding two-wheelers without helmets, overspeeding, and using mobile phones while driving.
