Strong start as Tigress edge Palestine at Asian Cup qualifiers

The Star30-06-2025
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian women's football team made a roaring start to their 2026 Asian Cup qualifying campaign, edging Palestine 1-0 in a gritty Group H opener at the Pamir Central Stadium in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on Sunday.
Farahiyah Ridzuan emerged the match-winner with a clinical strike in the 85th minute but it was goalkeeper Nurul Azurin Mazlan who stood tall as Malaysia's rock at the back.
Azurin, who plays for Kosovo club KFF Vllaznia, delivered a standout performance between the posts, pulling off a crucial penalty save in the 25th minute and winning multiple one-on-one battles to keep the Malaysians in the game.

Her commanding presence ensured the Malaysian Tigress had a fighting chance and Farahiyah seized the moment late on to seal all three points.
'This is our first three points in the qualifiers and it's a huge boost,' said Azurin.
'We didn't start well, the first half was shaky but in the second half, we found our rhythm. Everyone gave 100%, and the result went our way.'
Coach Joel Cornelli praised the team's resilience and defensive structure, particularly against a Palestine side that belied their lower world ranking with a spirited display.
In the world rankings, Malaysia are ranked world No. 102 while Palestine are No. 134.
'It was a tough match. Palestine may be ranked below us but they've pushed strong teams before,' said the Brazilian tactician.
'I'm pleased with how we organised ourselves defensively and closed out the match.
'We pressed high and that sometimes leaves gaps but it's something we'll work on ahead of the next game.'
Malaysia will now shift their focus to hosts Tajikistan while Palestine face a stern test against tournament favourites North Korea.
Both matches are scheduled for tomorrow.

FAM marketing and sponsorship committee chairman Datuk Mohd Hisamudin Yahaya revealed that the national body have so far raised between RM7mil and RM8mil through the backing of several sponsors. With about half the target still to be achieved in the remaining four months, Hisamudin admitted that the association must step up their efforts to meet the goal set by their president. Hisamudin added that the funds are crucial to cover the expenses of not only the senior national team but also the Under-23 and women's squads. 'We currently have around RM7mil to RM8mil in sponsorship, but we are still short and working to reach the target. 'We already have some initiatives in place and more in the pipeline. For now, we cannot disclose the new measures, but what matters is that the RM15mil target set by the FAM president is met,' said Hisamudin. FAM yesterday renewed their partnership with isotonic drink brand 100PLUS at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya. Under the renewed deal, 100PLUS will continue as the official isotonic drink partner of the national team for two years, with a total sponsorship worth RM2mil. Meanwhile, Fraser and Neave (F&N) Holdings Bhd food and industry engagement division managing director Datuk Raffiq Md Ariff said 100PLUS has always remained committed to supporting football in Malaysia. 'We believe the best way to contribute to the growth and development of the sport is through our partnership with FAM. We are pleased with the strong relationship we have built over the years and are delighted to continue this collaboration for another two years,' he said.

Celtic, Fenerbahce held to draws in Champions League play-offs

PARIS: Celtic's Champions League hopes are firmly in the balance after they were held to a goalless draw by Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan in Glasgow in the first leg of their play-off tie on Wednesday, while Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce played out a goalless draw with Benfica. The Scottish champions pushed Bayern Munich close in the knockout phase play-offs last season after finishing 21st out of 36 teams in the league stage. But Brendan Rodgers's team could not break down the champions of Kazakhstan, who have already come through three qualifying rounds to get to this stage and are eyeing a first ever appearance in the competition proper. James Forrest was denied by a great save from Kairat goalkeeper Aleksandr Zarutskiy right at the start of the second half from one of few clear chances that fell Celtic's way at Parkhead. At the other end, Brazilian Edmilson saw a chip from inside the centre circle for Kairat land on the roof of the net following a mistake by Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers. Daizen Maeda then found himself in behind the Kairat defence late on but could only shoot straight at substitute goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov. Celtic therefore have it all to do when they make the daunting trip east next week to Almaty, not far from Kazakhstan's border with China. "We're disappointed with the result and first-half performance. We didn't start with the intent and mentality we wanted to. We were quite passive," said Rodgers, whose team were booed off at full-time. "There's no doubt we can go there and win. Of course, you want to take an advantage with you, (but) it's still very much in the balance." Fenerbahce and Benfica played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their tie in Istanbul. The Portuguese giants, who lost in the last 16 last season to Barcelona, held on in the pressure cooker atmosphere in Turkey despite having midfielder Florentino sent off in the second half. Benfica therefore have the slight edge going into the return in Lisbon, but Fenerbahce are aiming to reach the Champions League proper for the first time since 2008/09. Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt look certain to reach the league phase of Europe's elite club competition for the first time after a stunning 5-0 home win over Austria's Sturm Graz. Kasper Hogh, Odin Bjortuft and Ulrik Saltnes all scored in the first 25 minutes for last season's Europa League semi-finalists. Hakon Evjen made it four early in the second half and a William Boving own goal completed the rout. Swiss champions Basel drew 1-1 at home to FC Copenhagen in heavy rain at St Jakob-Park. Xherdan Shaqiri's early penalty put Basel in front, but Gabriel Pereira equalised for the Danish side in first-half stoppage time.
