Sitaare Zameen Par review: This heartwarming Aamir Khan film stumbles, then soars to score a basket in the 2nd half
The past weeks have been marked by quite a lot of negativity around Aamir Khan. But the man has been unfazed, on a promotional spree for his latest film- which shows the confidence he had in his product. And I cross my heart when I write this: I sat down with high hopes from Sitaare Zameen Par, a spiritual sequel to the 2007 hit Taare Zameen Par. It's an official adaptation of the 2018 Italian film Campeones.
There's something about his films- yes, even Laal Singh Chaddha… they decidedly look at the bright side of things. I was doing that, too, in this case. And to sum it up right at the outset: Aamir delivers.
Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by RS Prasanna, is a story without a villain. An egoistic basketball assistant coach, Gulshan Arora, is suspended after he hits his senior in a fit of rage. Then, he rams into a police van while drunk, only to be sentenced to community service- teaching basketball for three months to a team of specially-abled adults. Shocked and constantly complaining, Gulshan reluctantly takes up the job, unprepared that it's he who's going to get coached instead.
You might think this group of special individuals would see their circumstances as the villain in their lives- but the way writer Divy Nidhi Sharma spins it is a winner. At no point do the makers try to play the sympathy card. These are adults, like you and me. Their definition of 'normal' is all that's different. One of them smokes too- and while it's a vice, the fact that she does it drives home the point… they don't want us to look at them with a pitiful gaze.
The first half is slow and tests your patience. Aamir being angry with his new role, getting to know his special team, then struggling in his marriage with Sunita (Genelia Deshmukh)- there's a lot that eats up screen time and feels like lazy writing. There's the occasional laugh- pretty much what one saw in the trailer.
The intermission point too isn't on a high. You settle into your seats after this, ready for a yawn-fest. But this is exactly when Sitaare Zameen Par miraculously finds its groove. Things begin to make sense- the laughter is back, with some sequences bringing the house down. Watch out for the one with Brijendra Kala as the highlight! The second half of Sitaare Zameen Par is my pick.
Aamir is good at comedy, and here too he's back to that genre. He's at ease with his co stars here, and the comfort translates. The first half is bearable only because of Aamir, and then he takes things a notch higher in the second one. Genelia complements him wonderfully as the supportive wife, and the cause of friction between them is thankfully not stretched beyond a point. Dolly Ahluwalia and Brijendra Kala are adorable in their roles and justify their short screen time with solid performances.
And now, the Sitaare- Ashish Pendse as Sunil wins your heart with his moving performance in a key scene. Aroush Datta, Aayush Bhansali, Rishi Shahani, Gopikrishnan K Verma, Rishabh Jain, Vedant Sharma, Simran Mangeshka, Samvit Desai, Naman Misra- the makers have managed to extract a film-worthy performance from all.
The music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is peppy and goes with the film. Don't expect as memorable a soundtrack as Taare Zameen Par, and you won't be disappointed.
Overall, Sitaare Zameen Par is a heartfelt product, meant to be experienced in a packed theatre. The collective laughter, the silent sniffles, and more, enhance the film's impact.
It may not shine as brightly as its predecessor, but these Sitaare light up the screen in their own beautiful way.

Aamir Khan on tough run of all film industries at box office: Take the decision, don't come to OTT before six months
With the release of his film Sitaare Zameen Par recently Aamir Khan has shut down the voices of those predicting Bollywood's doomsday. Aamir Khan The actor candidly opens up about sticking to his guns for its release on the next episode of the weekly show, The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra. The episode drops today at 7pm across Hindustan Times' YouTube channels. Excerpts: Aamir, you have been called the man of the moment... Right now, I am just relieved! Is it a relief because Bollywood has been having a tough run lately? Not just Bollywood, every language is; don't count the top hits like say, Pathaan, Jawan (both 2023) or Pushpa (2021), whether it's in the south or Hindi films. I am including Hollywood — this exists all over the world. Relief and happiness is what one has been hoping for in Bollywood, and you have spearheaded that. Lovely compliments are coming your way for Sitaare Zameen Par. What did Gauri (Spratt, girlfriend) say the moment she finished watching it? Itna pyaar mil raha hai iss film ko, people have fallen in love with it. They feel so happy when watching it. Gauri has really loved the film. She has been confident from the beginning. One has been hoping that theatrical viewing finds its mojo again... many are wondering why people don't want to come to theatres for films, isn't it? The quality of cinema hasn't changed in the last three to four years. Jaisi filmein 10 saal ya 8 saal pehle bann rahi thi, quality abhi bhi wahi hai. Kuch achchi hoti thi pehle, kuch buri. The difference is, earlier, films would come to OTT six months after release. If you give me an offer — come to theatres ya free mein ghar par dekho, main kahan dekhunga? World over, film industry ke log sar kyun khujla rahe hain, mujhe samajh nahin aa raha. Simple solution hai: if people want us to return to square one, studios and producers will have to insist, 'We won't sell to OTT before six months.' Phir dekhiye dhandha kaise badalta hai. OTTs zyada paisa de rahe hain, ek safety crutch mil raha hai producers ko. Koi risk nahin lena chah raha hai. Also read: Sitaare Zameen Par movie review: Aamir Khan's heartwarming film stumbles, then soars to score a basket in the 2nd half Are you hopeful that other producers will be able to sustain the risk you have taken? We have to decide for ourselves. I have made it very clear to my audience: I will stick to the old pattern of releases. OTTs have given me healthy offers to bring the film out within two months of its theatrical release. Woh mujhe manzoor nahin. For me, OTT is no longer an option as a producer. Every producer has to do this — if things need to change, mere akele se cheezein nahin badlengi. Haan, mere liye badal jaayengi, but industry ke liye karna hai toh industry ko step lena padhega. You have always stayed under the radar, but several people feels Aamir only comes out of hibernation when he has a film releasing... Very true. I am a creative person, I get lost in my work. Main film banaun ya interview doon? Sachin Tendulkar ko aap pitch par bolte ho kya 'Interview do, batting baad mein karo'? Mujhe kaam toh karne do! Uska risk yeh hai ki jab koi newsy cheez aati hai — you aren't on social media — you are giving people freeway to create the perception they want. Woh galat hai, I should correct that. People make false allegations and I keep quiet because I think my audience knows me, so farak nahin padhega. I am not a talkative person. While making a film, I am not available often to my family, too. At that time, I'm not thinking of interviews. As a journalist, I wouldn't disturb anyone in creative work. Zahir hai, jab film aayegi, main baat karna chahunga. Mera audience ke sath gehra rishta hai. Main har jagah ja ke bolunga, 'Meri film dekho'. Isme galat kya hai? Aap mujhse kyun complain kar rahe ho!

Warner Bros. Furious As F1 Gets Fewer Screens Than Sitaare Zameen Par
Last Updated: Warner Bros. has sent a warning to the Indian multiplex chain, demanding fair screen allocations for F1 and its upcoming releases. Things are heating up between Warner Bros. and PVR Inox, India's largest multiplex chain and also a leading distributor, over the number of shows for F1 The Movie. The American studio has accused the multiplex chain of favouring Bollywood movies over Hollywood ones. With Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par running successfully in theatres since June 20, and Kajol's mythological horror film, Maa, set to hit theatres on June 27, the sports drama F1 is struggling to secure a sufficient number of shows in Indian theatres. F1 The Movie is one of the highly anticipated films of 2025. Starring Brad Pitt as the lead, it is a high-octane racing drama that has already impressed critics and fans alike. Set to be released on June 27, it currently has an over 90 per cent critic score. Despite all the buzz, F1 is struggling to secure enough screens and prime-time slots, which PVR Inox has given to Sitaare Zameen Par. According to reports, Warner Bros. has sent a warning to the Indian multiplex chain, demanding fair screen allocations for F1 and its upcoming releases. They have also threatened to pull out films from the chain if they fail to do so. A source told Bollywood Hungama, 'Warner felt that they were getting unfair treatment. They also got a sense that PVR Inox was giving them a raw deal and giving preference to Sitaare Zameen Par and Maa, films which are distributed by PVR Inox Pictures." Warner Bros. is trying to get more screens for Brad Pitt's sports drama by using its upcoming, much-awaited films like Jurassic World Rebirth and Superman as bait. The American studio has reportedly warned PVR Inox that if it does not allocate the required shows for F1, it will skip the multiplex chain completely for its new releases. But things are easier said than done. Because PVR Inox is the leading multiplex chain in India, Warner Bros. cannot afford to skip it altogether. This isn't the first time that screen allocation has caused a stir. PVR Inox often prefers big, star-driven Indian films over Hollywood ones, despite the buzz surrounding those. With numerous highly anticipated releases on June 27 and in the following weeks, a few films are likely to receive fewer screens. From PVR Inox's point of view, Sitaare Zameen Par is generating good revenue, so it made sense to allocate more screens to it. However, if F1 manages to draw a crowd, the chain will likely add more prime-time slots. For now, negotiations are ongoing, with no resolution announced yet. First Published:
