Private equity at a crossroads
LUDOVIC Phalippou, who holds a doctorate in financial economics from Oxford University, has become one of the most closely followed and debated voices in private equity. His articles in Enterprising Investor were among the most-read in 2024, and I was pleased to sit down with him for a wide-ranging conversation.
Known for his sharp analysis and independent perspective, he has long challenged the industry's dominant narratives, and did so with his usual clarity and candour during our conversation.
In our discussion, which aired on May 21 on YouTube, Phalippou revisited several themes that have defined his research: performance reporting, governance, incentives and transparency. But we also explored how the current macro environment and the changing investor base are placing new pressures on an already-complex system. The result is a thought-provoking look at where private equity stands today, and where it may be heading.
* Impact of rising rates
Phalippou began by discussing how the current macroeconomic environment, particularly rising interest rates, were exerting pressure on private equity firms. He said that higher borrowing costs have directly affected the leveraged buyout model that has traditionally underpinned private equity returns. As debt has become more expensive, deals have needed to generate higher operational improvements or revenue growth to offset this financial burden.
Phalippou emphasised that many PE firms were now resorting to financial engineering or restructuring debt to avoid public bankruptcies. But he warned that these tactics might not be sustainable in a persistently high-interest-rate environment.

* Transparency and governance
One of Phalippou's central critiques has been the lack of transparency in private equity, which he likens to the mutual fund industry of the early 20th century, before reforms were implemented. He has pressed for standardised reporting and stricter governance to protect investors, particularly as private equity becomes more accessible to retail markets.
He has highlighted issues with traditional metrics, such as the internal rate of return (IRR), and delved into how this can be manipulated to present an overly optimistic picture of performance.
* Performance myths
Phalippou has challenged the widely held belief that private equity consistently outperforms public markets, and argued that the metrics used to support this claim often fail to account for survivorship bias or the lack of appropriate benchmarks.
He says that the perception of superior returns is frequently based on selective reporting and marketing rather than reality.
*Alignment of interests
Another key theme in the interview was the alignment – or misalignment – of interests between private equity fund managers, executives and investors. Phalippou stressed the importance of understanding who benefits most from PE structures. He noted that while fund managers often claim their interests are aligned with those of investors, the reality is more complex, and he shared examples.
* ESG practices
When asked about ESG (environmental, social, governance) initiatives in private equity, he offered a nuanced view. While acknowledging that ESG compliance is increasingly important, he suggested that many firms were approaching it more as a marketing tool or regulatory requirement, rather than as a genuine driver of value creation. Phalippou touched on the growing involvement of private equity in owning sports franchises, characterising the trend as a blend of professionalisation and vanity projects. While private equity firms bring operational discipline and financial expertise to sports management, an element of prestige and personal ambition also drives these investments.
* The role of academia
Reflecting on his role as an academic, Phalippou discussed his efforts to demystify private equity for his students and foster critical thinking. He wants them to go beyond the industry's surface-level jargon and be equipped with the tools to ask deeper, more critical questions about the data and assumptions behind private equity practices.
* Challenges facing the industry
Phalippou outlined several challenges that private equity firms are likely to face in the coming years. These include:
Increased scrutiny: As private equity becomes more accessible to retail investors, it will face heightened scrutiny from regulators and the public.

Trump and Xi agree to further talks to settle trade disputes
[WASHINGTON] US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping agreed to further talks between the countries to hash out differences on tariffs that have roiled the global economy, according to US and Chinese summaries of their phone call on Thursday (Jun 5). 'There should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of rare earth products,' Trump wrote on social media. 'Our respective teams will be meeting shortly at a location to be determined.' Trump and a Chinese government summary of the meeting said the leaders had invited each other to their respective countries at a future date. 'The US side should take a realistic view of the progress made and withdraw the negative measures imposed on China,' the Chinese government said in a statement published by the state-run Xinhua news agency. 'Xi Jinping welcomed Trump's visit to China again, and Trump expressed his sincere gratitude.' The highly anticipated call came amid accusations between Washington and Beijing in recent weeks over 'rare earths' minerals in a dispute that has threatened to tear up a fragile truce in the trade war between the two biggest economies. The countries struck a 90-day deal on May 12 to roll back some of the triple-digit, tit-for-tat tariffs they had placed on each other since Trump's January inauguration. Sign Up Sign Up Though stocks rallied, the temporary deal did not address broader concerns that strain the bilateral relationship, from the illicit fentanyl trade to the status of democratically governed Taiwan and US complaints about China's state-dominated, export-driven economic model. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has repeatedly threatened an array of punitive measures on trading partners, only to revoke some of them at the last minute. The on-again, off-again approach has baffled world leaders and spooked business executives, who say the uncertainty has made it difficult to forecast market conditions. China's decision in April to suspend exports of a wide range of critical minerals and magnets continues to disrupt supplies needed by automakers, computer chip manufacturers and military contractors around the world. Beijing sees mineral exports as a source of leverage – halting those exports could put domestic political pressure on the Republican US president if economic growth sags because companies cannot produce mineral-powered products. The 90-day deal to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions is tenuous. Trump has accused China of violating the agreement and has ordered curbs on chip design software and other shipments to China, while also doubling steel and aluminum tariffs to 50 per cent. Beijing rejected the claim and threatened counter-measures. In recent years, the US has identified China as its top geopolitical rival and the only country in the world able to challenge the US economically and militarily. Despite this and repeated trade threats and tariff announcements, Trump has spoken admiringly of Xi, including of the Chinese leader's toughness and ability to stay in power without the term limits imposed on US presidents. Trump has long pushed for a call or a meeting with Xi, but China has rejected that as not in keeping with its traditional approach of working out agreement details before the leaders talk. The US president and his aides see leader-to-leader talks as vital to sort through log-jams that have vexed lower-level officials in difficult negotiations. Thursday's call came at Trump's request, China said. It's not clear when the two men last spoke. Both sides said they spoke on Jan 17, days before Trump's inauguration and Trump has repeatedly said that he had spoken to Xi since taking office on Jan 20. He has declined to say when any call took place or to give details of their conversation. China had said that the two leaders had not had any recent phone calls. The talks are being closely watched by investors worried that a chaotic trade war could cut into corporate earnings and disrupt supply chains in the key months before the Christmas holiday shopping season. Trump, Xi spoke by phone as trade and tech disputes strain ties
[WASHINGTON] US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke on Thursday (Jun 5), according to China's Foreign Ministry, as trade tensions roil relations between the world's two largest economies. Relations between the two rivals have soured in recent weeks, with both sides accusing the other of violating a trade truce that brought down tariffs from massive highs. With the fresh conflict threatening the fragile détente, market analysts were hopeful the conversation would pave the way to a trade off-ramp. Stocks rose on news of the call, with the S&P 500 extending gains into a fourth straight day. The phone call between the leaders marks their first known formal contact since Trump took office. The last conversation between Trump and Xi took place in January before the US president's inauguration. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the call was initiated at Trump's request. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Rare earths have emerged in recent days as a key flashpoint. The US has accused China of reneging on a promise to relax export controls on such metals needed for cutting-edge electronics. Beijing has been frustrated by fresh US restrictions on the sale of chip design software and plans to start revoking visas for Chinese students. Export controls and US actions on student visas and technology curbs will likely be central to future negotiations. US and Chinese trade chiefs only agreed in Geneva last month to lower tariffs for 90 days, as they worked towards a broader deal. History suggests that any final deal could be a long time coming. In 2018 during Trump's first term as president, the two sides agreed to put their dispute 'on hold' after a round of negotiations, but the US soon backed away from that deal, leading to more than 18 months of further tariffs and talks before the signing of the 'Phase One' deal in January 2020. One goal for China this time around will be seeking relief from US export controls on cutting-edge chips vital for AI and military advancement. That's likely to be a sticking point in Washington, with both Democrats and Republicans in rare agreement that Beijing poses a national security threat. Beyond strains in economic ties, geopolitical frictions are also growing. Foreign Ministry officials this month protested US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's assertion at a gathering of military chiefs in Singapore that China poses an imminent threat to Taiwan, a self-ruled island claimed by Beijing. China's tourism industry could hit one trillion yuan by 2026: Citi
[SINGAPORE] China's tourism sector will gain a boost as the country seeks to diversify from manufacturing to other services, said Citi in a note on Thursday (Jun 5). This could transform the country's tourism sector into a one trillion yuan (S$178.9 billion) industry by 2026, said the bank's China economists Yu Xiangrong, Hu Yuanliu and Ji Xinyu. Policymakers have introduced substantive measures to support inbound tourism from abroad in an effort to soften the blow from US tariffs on goods exports, said Citi. This includes waiving unilateral visa requirements for 30 days of travel for an additional nine countries in South America and the Middle East in May, bringing the number of countries with unilateral visa-free entries to 47 countries. In December 2024, the country's transit policy had also been extended to allow visa-exempted travellers to make stops of up to 10 days (240 hours), a duration previously set at 72 or 144 hours, depending on the traveller's citizenship. This change also expanded permitted stay locations by an additional 60 ports and 24 provinces, the note found. Tax rebates have become easier to obtain for tourists, with the minimum purchase threshold reduced from 500 yuan to 200 yuan in April. Considerable effort has also been undertaken by payment companies along with the country's central bank to improve convenience and operability for foreign tourists, the note said. Sign Up Sign Up Such measures were notable in returning inbound tourism to pre-pandemic levels. The country's Ministry of Commerce reported that foreign tourists spent US$94.2 billion in 2024, an increase of 77.8 per cent from the year before. This accounted for about 0.5 per cent of gross domestic product. Currently, travellers to China comprise largely of residents from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, making up about 80 per cent of the 131.9 million inbound travellers in 2024, said Citi. But momentum from beyond the region is building, with visits by foreigners increasing 40.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2025 from the previous corresponding period. 'The policy efforts are paying off,' the Citi team wrote, explaining that China's brand as a travel destination has become increasingly attractive. 'More international tourists are seeking to experience a 'real China'.' Lower-tier cities and local destinations have benefited from this trend, beyond popular travel destinations such as Beijing and Shanghai, the bank said. 'For example, Zhangjiajie has been popular for Korean tourists.' The deflationary environment in China, coupled with a weak renminbi, could further boost tourist spending, Citi wrote. If demand continues into the rest of 2025, the bank forecast a 40 per cent rise in foreign tourism and a 10 per cent rise in travellers from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Macroeconomic boost Revenue from inbound tourists in 2025 could grow to 880 billion yuan, in a 30 per cent increase from the previous year, Citi projected. This would add 0.15 percentage point to the country's GDP growth, the bank said. Local labour markets stand to gain from increased travel, with official reports estimating that 1.6 times more jobs are created from services compared to goods exports of the same value. Citi projected that the 30 per cent travel export growth would create about 500,000 non-farm jobs, bringing headline unemployment down by about 0.1 percentage point. Yet, a tourism boost may not be sufficient to relieve the country's deflation struggles. 'China's deflation is mostly industrial-driven with quite an entrenched demand-supply imbalance,' the report said. Travellers to China made up about 0.5 per cent of total retail sales in 2024, the bank said, which would not be enough of a demand boost to move the needle.
