What is happening with Jack Grealish amid 'swap deal' claims and Man Utd issue

Daily Mirror4 hours ago

Jack Grealish has been dealing with limited minutes at Manchester City in recent times, with boss Pep Guardiola prepared to make a move for his potential replacement
Jack Grealish looks set to be on his way out of Manchester City - and Pep Guardiola is reportedly preparing to offer him up in a straight swap for Real Madrid ace Rodrygo. The out-of-favour winger has spent most of the 2024/25 season on the Etihad Stadium bench, making just seven appearances in City's starting XI during the Premier League campaign.
In 20 total appearances in the league, Grealish scored once and assisted one altogether. The lack of form meant that the England international has been left out of City's Club World Cup squad and will not feature in their opening game against Wydad AC on Wednesday at 5pm.
Guardiola is keen to limit the losses on the £100million man, with City reportedly interested in Real's Rodrygo in a potential swap deal. Defensa Central reports that the Spanish manager has asked the club to utilise Grealish with the 'idea of lowering the price for the Brazilian' winger this summer.
However, these plans may be squashed before they begin, as UOL reports that new Real boss Xabi Alonso is 'counting on the young Brazilian and, therefore, is against a transfer this summer'.
Guardiola has got other options for Grealish, as we reported that Serie A champions Napoli are in the running for the winger's signature.
Grealish is subject of interest from the Italian side, but his hefty £300,000-per-week wages may create a barrier in the deal transpiring. As well as this, other reports suggest that Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho is on their radar.
Garnacho may cause an issue with Grealish's potential move to Italy this summer, as Napoli may opt for a younger star out wide in the 20-year-old, rather the man nine years his senior.
Napoli have already been shopping in the Manchester this summer, snapping up long-time City servant Kevin De Bruyne on a two-year deal following his emotional exit from the club.
There are more clubs reportedly interested in bringing Grealish on a loan move. Newcastle, Everton and Tottenham may all be prepared to give the winger a chance next season.
A sensational return to his boyhood club Aston Villa could may well be an option for Grealish, and he wouldn't be the first big-money player to enjoy a homecoming in the Premier League.
Spurs icon Gareth Bale was given a final season at his old club in the 2020/21 season, scoring 16 goals in all competitions - and these statistics could be a welcoming sight for Grealish if he does plan on moving permanently from the Etihad Stadium in the future.
Speaking ahead of the Club World Cup, Guardiola admitted that Grealish does require more game time, but this doesn't mean it will be with his current club in the near future. The City boss said: "Of course, Jack has to play. He's an unbelievable player that has to play football every three days. It didn't happen this season and last season either. He needs to do it, with us or another place.
"It's a question for Jack, his agent and the club. If he stays it will be fine and he will fight like he fought from day one to make a contribution, but not today."
Guardiola added: "It's nothing personal with Jack. I'm the person who fought for him to come here and the person who fought for him to stay here this season."

Enzo Maresca gives take on ‘strange' Chelsea CWC game in ‘almost empty stadium'

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca praised his players for dealing with a 'strange' environment after kicking off their Club World Cup campaign with a victory in front of almost 50,000 empty seats. The Blues beat Los Angeles FC 2-0 in their Group D opener at the 71,000-capacity Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta in a fixture watched by a crowd of just 22,137 on Monday afternoon as a debate over the level of interest in FIFA's new-look competition raged on. Advertisement Speaking at his post-match press conference, Maresca, said: 'I think the environment was a bit strange, the stadium was almost empty, not full. A crowd of only 22,137 watched Chelsea's opener (Mike Stewart/AP) 'We are professional and we have to adapt to the situation, to the environment. You have to adapt when you play with a full stadium. You have to adapt when the stadium is not full, but it doesn't matter.' Asked about the poor attendance, opposite number Steve Cherundolo was diplomatic. The LAFC boss said: 'I think it is different each game you look at. In the Rose Bowl in LA, there was a huge crowd for the game between PSG and Atletico Madrid. Maybe LA likes football more than Atlanta? I don't know, we should judge at the end.' Maresca praised debutant Delap and quickly switched his attention to the fixture against Brazilian outfit Flamengo. He said on Channel 5: 'Very good result. At this stage of the season it is also normal that you have to manage different kinds of things. Overall the performance has been good. Advertisement 'We have to recover. We have a game in three days so we will see. We are going to prepare in the best way and for sure try to win. 'The good thing about Liam is he knows the way we want to play so the process is quite quick. Also we gave a chance to Dario Essugo which is another player we have, so it's good for both of them.' Liam Delap (left) claimed an assist for Chelsea's second goal (Brynn Anderson/AP) Delap signed from Ipswich for £30million 12 days ago and it took him just 15 minutes to register his first goal contribution. The 22-year-old said: 'It's a really happy feeling for me. I'm so excited to be here and to play my first game, and be able to contribute is a good feeling. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy: I've no regrets over Postecoglou appointment

Levy, flanked by new chief executive Vinai Venkatesham in an interview posted on the club's YouTube channel, said he did not make the 'emotionally difficult' decision to fire Postecoglou on his own. Ultimately losing 22 Premier League matches and finishing 17th cost Postecoglou his job after two years at the club. 'I don't regret appointing Ange,' said Levy. 'In his first season we finished fifth and in the second season we were over the moon to win a trophy but we need to compete in all competitions. We felt that we needed a change. 'It was a collective decision. It wasn't my decision. We do everything together. 'Emotionally it was difficult but we believe we have made the right decision for the club.' Tottenham have appointed Brentford boss Thomas Frank as Postecoglou's successor and Levy hopes a new man with new ideas will help get the club back on track. 'Whenever you have a new coach, it is always a fresh start. You have different ideas,' he added. 'We want to build on the success of winning a trophy last season. 'One of the things that stood out to me with Thomas — clearly highly intelligent, great communicator, super human being, plus all of the other technical aspects that are important.'
