International Museum Day 2025: Know the theme, history, significance, and more
In 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) declared May 18 as International Museum Day (IMD), based on the notion that museums have the potential to transform and to raise awareness that 'Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures, and the development of mutual understanding, cooperation, and peace among peoples.'
The concept for IMD dates back to 1951, when the ICOM convened the international museum community for a 'Crusade for Museums' meeting to examine the issue of 'museums and education'. The day was officially created in 1977, when a resolution approved by the ICOM General Assembly in Moscow was adopted.
It is marked by museums globally with events in line with the theme declared by the ICOM every year, and over the last ten years, the day has grown significantly and widespread, with over 37,000 museums from 158 countries participating in recent years.

Being observed on a Sunday, May 18, this year, the theme chosen for 2025 is 'The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities', which reimagines museums as essential connectors, innovators, and guardians of cultural identity.
It also emphasises critical future talks about how museums may protect intangible legacies, harness youth energy, and adapt to new technology frontiers, paving the way for museums and communities to thrive in an era of rapid change.

Bypoll: public holiday in Nilambur on June 19
A public holiday has been declared for government offices and educational institutions in the Nilambur Assembly constituency due to the Assembly byelection on June 19. It will be a paid holiday for all institutions under the Negotiable Instruments Act of 1881. Elderly people and differently abled persons can ensure voting facilities through the Election Commission's Saksham app. The app is designed to guarantee full participation of the differently abled and the elderly in the election, said Election Commission officials. By downloading and registering the Saksham-ECI app on the mobile from Google Play Store, one can find the polling booths, get information about candidates and voters, ensure wheelchair accessibility for voting, and arrange transportation of differently abled voters in emergencies. One should register in advance through the app using the election ID card number. District Social Justice Officer Sameer Machingal will be responsible for ensuring services to the differently abled. For the visually impaired, Braille script will be available on the voting machine. Voters over 85 years of age and differently abled will also get the opportunity to vote from their homes through home voting. All polling booths in Nilambur will be on the ground floor to help the differently abled. Ramps and wheelchairs will be provided in all polling booths. District Collector V.R. Vinod called upon the elderly and differently abled voters of Nilambur to make use of their franchise to utilise the Saksham mobile app. People can complain about violations of the election code of conduct at the control room at 0483- 2734990. Election Commission has declared dry days in Nilambur on June 19 and 20.

IMD forecasts thunderstorms in South Bengal, severe storms in eastern Uttar Pradesh
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall in south Bengal districts and heavy rain in the sub-Himalayan districts till Friday morning. Severe thunderstorms accompanied by hail are expected to continue over eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Hardoi, Raebareli, Unnao, and Ayodhya, for the next two to three hours, the IMD said. Sharp showers lashed the metropolis and nearby Salt Lake on Tuesday night, causing a steep fall in minimum temperatures, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Heavy rain is expected to continue until Thursday morning in the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar, the IMD added. Salt Lake recorded the highest rainfall in south Bengal at 81.3 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday, the department said. Kolkata's Alipore station received 38 mm of rain, while Dum Dum logged 57 mm during the same period. In north Bengal, Cooch Behar recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 139 mm, followed by neighbouring Alipurduar with 110.2 mm. Meanwhile, in Delhi, a yellow alert has been issued as an early warning signal indicating that severe weather conditions are expected and may affect day-to-day activities. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds ranging between 40 to 50 kilometres per hour. The relative humidity at 8.30 am was recorded at 71 per cent. The maximum temperature is expected to settle at 34 degrees Celsius, the IMD said. The air quality in the city was recorded in the moderate category, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) standing at 181 at 9 am. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 to 100 'satisfactory', 101 to 200 'moderate', 201 to 300 'poor', 301 to 400 'very poor', and 401 to 500 'severe'.
