
Woolworths sends nostalgic shoppers wild over new $12 item: 'I'm going to cry'
The supermarket chain has unveiled its new Caramelised Biscuit Lamingtons, available in a pack of four for $12 in stores across Australia.
The classic treat has been given a 'glow up', with the new version featuring a soft vanilla sponge, dipped in a rich caramel-flavoured chocolate and rolled in caramelised biscuit crumbs.
'We know Aussies love a classic lamington, but they also love the popular flavour of caramelised biscuits,' Laura McLeod, Woolworths Category Manager for Cakes, said.
'We wanted to combine the two to create an exciting new treat that feels both nostalgic and modern.
'It's the perfect blend of soft sponge and a crunchy, spiced biscuit coating - we think it's a new winter favourite.'
Shoppers can enjoy the decadent treat - but it won't be around for long as it's only available in the lead up to National Lamington Day on July 21.
Many shoppers were excited about the new creation, with one saying: 'I'm going to cry'.
'Caramelised Biscuit Lamingtons are coming to Woolies... Basically Biscoff. I'm keen AF,' popular foodie Nectro Vlangos, known as Nectoriouspapi, said.
The upgraded lamingtons can be purchased in stores and online.
The new launch comes just weeks after Woolworths released Choc Chip Cookie Mud Cake, an addition to its range that sees five mud cakes sold every minute in Australia.
Priced at just $7, the dessert features a caramel mud cake base packed with cookie pieces and topped with choc chip drizzle, blending two household favourites - cake and cookie - into one indulgent creation.
Ms Mcleod said the bakery team wanted to fuse the familiar nostalgia of freshly baked biscuits with the rich decadence of the brand's signature mud cake.
'We've infused that unmistakable, beloved flavour of freshly-baked choc chip cookies right into our signature caramel mud cake,' she explained, adding that the team knew Australians had a soft spot for that classic cookie taste.
'By combining it with our popular mud cake, we've aimed to create an irresistible new treat.'
Aussie foodie content creators Nick Vavitis and Nectro Vlangos shared their first impressions in a taste testing video together.
Nick said the cake was 'loaded with cookies on top' and packed 'full of choc chips,' describing the flavour as 'absolutely smashing [his] taste buds.'
Nectro agreed, saying it 'hits you in the face straight away' and likening the dessert to 'a massive chocolate chip muffin,' with a caramel ganache icing that adds to the richness.
'I absolutely love this one,' he said.
'It's the best mud cake since the birthday cake flavour.'
Nick went one step further, insisting it's 'definitely one of the best mud cakes Woolworths has ever released'.

PayPal unveils 'Pay with Crypto' feature It has been a busy month at PayPal. The company also announced a new service, called Pay with Crypto, to enable US businesses to accept payments in over 100 cryptocurrencies. The service, which is expected to become available within weeks, will let customers pay with cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as stablecoins including USDC. They will also be able to use wallets such as Coinbase and MetaMask. The programme had issued around 30,000 cards to 14-to 24-year-olds who could not be paid via direct deposit, and were only designed to give users access to that week's earnings. However, a fault allowed users to withdraw as much as $40,000 per ATM. As the fault went viral on social media, some users even sold their cards for $1,000. Mastercard unveils A2A Protect in the UK As account-to-account (A2A) payment fraud has soared to £592 million in the UK last year, Mastercard has rolled out a new service to help banks protect consumers from A2A payment fraud and resolve disputes. A2A Protect will initially focus on the most pressing concerns, such as Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud. The service also includes a uniform procedure for banks to resolve disputes and recover funds, across multiple use cases. Future phases will, among other features, include processes for recovering funds across a broader range of scenarios. Bailey and Reeves clash over Revolut banking licence - FT In July 2024, Revolut finally won its hard-fought-for UK banking license. The approval triggered a 'mobilisation' stage while building out its controls and infrastructure, which was expected to end after 12 months. However, in July 2025, the approval anniversary came and went without an update. The Financial Times reports that efforts to accelerate Revolut's authorisation as a fully-licenced bank failed over a clash between The Bank of England governor Andrew John Bailey and chancellor Rachel Reeves. The Treasury commented in the FT: 'The chancellor and the governor have a strong and productive relationship and the government fully supports the operational independence of the Bank of England.' Why young Aussies are walking out of high-paying jobs and taking a salary cut despite cost-of-living crisis
Young Australians are less interested in having a long, stressful career as houses become increasingly unaffordable for average-income earners. Australia's median capital city house price is now above $1million, meaning only dual-income couples or individuals on high salaries can buy a home with a backyard. But rather than work harder in a career role to afford a house, Australia's younger workers are less inclined to do stressful corporate jobs, long-term, if there isn't a meaningful reward or a work-life balance, despite there being a cost-of-living crisis. Jin, 23, is graduating at the end of this year from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Science majoring in data science and accounting. He will start a full-time graduate role in January next year and is bracing for the occasional weekend shifts as he helps prepare financial reports for big firms during the twice-yearly earnings seasons. But he is aspiring for some work-life balance in his twenties, including some travel. 'I do think a balance is necessary - if we don't have the correct amount of sleep or just the correct amount of breaks to take our minds off things, it's just very hard for us to stay focused,' he told Daily Mail. 'I do want to explore the world outside of Australia. I want to see and experience different cultures.' He is also hoping to work reasonable hours so he has time for family and a social life. 'I think I have a nice balance right now, where I spend my time with my family and my partner,' he said. 'Once or twice a year, I strive to take a one-week holiday or go on a break with my family or my partner.' Jin will continue to live with his parents in Sydney as he saves up to eventually buy a place of his own, instead of spending an exorbitant amount on rent. 'The average salary of an auditor or any graduate role is not enough to have a balance - I would say 40 per cent of your salary will go to rent,' he said. 'How are people supposed to afford houses or go on holidays or have mortgages?' Jamie MacLennan, the Asia-Pacific managing director of TELUS Health, said younger workers were less inclined to take on stressful roles, despite needing higher pay to cope with the cost of living crisis. 'People are trying to rebalance and balance the work-life component in a world where we're essentially on 24/7,' he said. 'Somewhere along the line, people have got to earn a living, but then the question is - "What's the cost of making that living?" - that's where people are rebalancing. 'You can't quit completely or at scale - there's always going to be an element of people who do that. 'Whether they take the traditional career paths, whether they aspire to those, creates a bigger dislocation.' Mr MacLennan said the mental health effects of Covid on younger people would create succession planning issues for companies in coming years, as fewer of them aspired to be in senior roles. 'We haven't recovered from Covid - our brains have been rewired. There continues to be a mental health crisis - crisis is not an overstated term in Australian society and it's most acute in that younger generation coming through,' he said. 'People have that sense of missing out - they're in a situation where they can't afford to get what they want or they can't afford to live in the environment that they want.' Stress is now a deal breaker for staff, with recruitment agency Randstad revealing 60 per cent of workers would rather have less stress than more pay. Unbearable demands had seen 40 per cent of workers switch to a lower-paid role. Amelia O'Carrigan, Randstad's director of public sector and business support, said employers couldn't ask staff to work five days in the office without incentives. 'It's not a complete pull back on flexibility and expect that workers will agree to that. In fact, to completely say - "You need to be back into the office five days" I would say would be a risky strategy,' she said. 'As job confidence starts to return, you'd be at risk of employees looking elsewhere.' The Randstad survey of 5,250 workers in Australia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, the UK and the United States found stress to be a major issue. Financial concerns are the biggest driver of personal stress in Australia, with 44 per cent nominating it as a problem, a survey of 1,000 people by TELUS Health found. Unaffordable housing was also cited as a driver, with 18 per cent nominating their housing or living situation as a source of personal stress. While many young people are reconsidering taking on stressful roles, Jin said he would be willing to make sacrifices to one day establish a data-oriented start-up for small businesses, that could use AI to audit their finances in real time. 'If I were to want to live comfortably, or think about having a better life, I would try to branch off into a different industry,' he said. 'If the corporate ladder doesn't work, I'll try my hand with something I like within data science, because I sacrificed it away for stability - I'll try to think about doing a start-up project on the side. 'Earning more money comes with more responsibilities so naturally you come with more stress - probably personally, I think I have pretty good stress management.' 'My goal, before I hit 30, I'll try to get a car that I like, I like sportscars, I want to work towards that. We need goals in life or what are we working for? If we're just working for a living - it's not hard, it would just be very boring.'

Adani promised Australia billions from its Carmichael mine but it hasn't paid a cent in tax. How did we get here?
It was entirely foreseeable, and has resulted in billions of dollars in forgone revenue for Australia. But just how did policymakers fail to extract a single cent in company tax from Adani's Carmichael coalmine, even though it opened during the start of a commodity price boom? To understand how it came about, you must first rewind to 2010, a period that coincided with a sharp escalation in the climate wars that would eventually tear through the political corridors of Canberra. Against that backdrop, the Indian conglomerate proposed a coalmine to extract up to 60m tonnes per year, for 150 years, making it one of the world's biggest. It would also open up the untapped Galilee Basin, ushering in a new period of resources prosperity, especially for central Queensland. The economic promise was enticing. At its peak, such an operation would create more than 10,000 full-time jobs, according to an Adani consultant's report published in 2013. The then head of Adani mining, Jeyakumar Janakaraj, said the Australian operations would deliver $22bn in taxes and royalties to be invested 'right back into frontline services'. The '10,000 jobs [and] $22bn in royalties and taxes' pledge became a mantra that was even featured in Adani TV advertisements. Sign up: AU Breaking News email It would be a win-win for the state and federal governments – royalties would flow to the state and company tax to the commonwealth – both of which needed to issue approvals. The Carmichael emissions would, of course, be colossal, producing 4.7bn tonnes of CO2-equivalent over its lifetime, once the mine, its operations and the burning of its coal were taken into account, according to analysis by the Australia Institute at the time. Annual emissions would be double the average produced by Tokyo, and three times that of New Delhi. The ensuing battle between environmentalists and the coalminer divided communities; but Adani's jobs and economic benefit pledge seemed irresistible – until it changed. In 2015, conservationists went to the Queensland land court, seeking a recommendation that Adani's applications for an environmental approval and mining lease for Carmichael be refused. The research director at the Australia Institute, Rod Campbell, says 'Adani's lawyers realised that the 10,000 jobs claim was unsupportable, so they bit the bullet'. Campbell, who provided economic analysis for the proceedings opposing Adani, says the coalminer changed consultants and argued in court for a more modest jobs claim 'but otherwise sang the praises of the mine'. The new economic models brought the expected job numbers down to fewer than 1,500. By 2015, the anticipated tonnes coming out of the mine had also reduced, from 60m a year to 40m; it would later reduce to 10m. But the projected corporate tax take still appeared strong, with the project forecast to generate about $400m a year under the new forecasts. Adani's modelling was broadly accepted by the court, even though critics pointed out it didn't account for tax minimisation strategies. By 2017, Adani's bid for a subsidised commonwealth loan was unravelling, and global banks were concerned about the economics and reputational damage of funding the new coal project. The mine's supporters doubled down, led by industry groups including the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), which called on policymakers to back the project. The MCA chief executive, Tania Constable, said in 2018 the Queensland and Australian economies would benefit from thousands of new regional jobs. 'And through mining taxes and royalties, the Carmichael mine will generate billions of dollars for taxpayers over decades to fund nurses, teachers, police, hospitals, roads and other services and infrastructure for Queensland families and communities,' Constable said. The MCA was contacted for comment. Adani would go on to finance the project itself, although it would be a smaller project than it had envisaged, given the lack of external funding. 'The coal will be sold to customers in the Asia-Pacific region at index adjusted pricing, which means all taxes and royalties will be paid here in Australia,' Adani said in late 2021, after assembling its first shipment of thermal coal at the port. The Indian conglomerate couldn't have timed the project any better. In late 2021, prices for energy commodities had started to surge in line with the rising tension between Russia and Ukraine. Coal prices then spiked to record highs after the Russian invasion in early 2022. In its first few months of operation, Adani's mine generated more than $32.5m in revenue, according to accounts lodged with the regulator. But it recorded an operating loss after costs, leading to zero tax payable. This pattern would repeat, even as revenue increased. In the 2025 reporting period, it earned $1.27bn in revenue, but once again recorded a paper loss, as various related-party transactions and interest payments erased profits. Tim Buckley, a former investment banker and the director of Climate Energy Finance, describes Adani's finances as an 'extremely complex, opaque corporate structure'. Jason Ward, the principal analyst at the Centre for International Corporate Tax Accountability and Research, says the volume of related-party transactions is 'pretty unprecedented' and that it is set up to never pay tax. 'Every page of their financials is like, 'bing, bing, warning bells going off',' says Ward. Adani has paid royalties – payments made to governments to extract state-owned minerals – with a $78.6m payment in the 2025 accounts, and $83.5m in 2024. Its most recent accounts list just 84 direct employees at the mine, however it uses a mining services provider to hire other workers. A spokesperson for Adani's Australian mining business, which is branded Bravus Mining and Resources, says Adani has invested more than $2.5bn into Australia's economy. 'Today, more than 1,200 Queenslanders are employed at the Carmichael mine in full-time operational roles to produce high-quality thermal coal for the export market,' the Bravus spokesperson says. 'Developing nations in the Asia-Pacific region use coal from the Carmichael mine alongside renewables to provide reliable and affordable energy solutions that help reduce poverty and power growth.' While there is no suggestion Adani has acted illegally, several politicians have expressed frustration that a large resources company can pay less company tax than a low-paid worker pays in income tax. The independent senator David Pocock said on X: 'Why on earth do successive [governments] keep allowing giant multinational companies to reap super profits from the sale of our resources without paying tax?' Independent MP Zali Steggall says Adani is a 'cautionary tale', and that policymakers should reform the approvals process to place conditions on miners to meet their stated promises. She says companies invariably overstate project benefits which 'magically disappear once the operations commence, especially when you're talking about foreign-owned corporations'. 'Time and time again, we see state and federal ministers and governments approve projects on flimsy assurances that don't come true,' says Steggall. 'It's time there was proper accountability for Australian resources so that we stop giving it away in the manner we are at the moment.' Jonathan Barrett is Guardian Australia's business editor
