ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said 'Congratulations to all of you for representing Pakistan's stance strongly and effectively on the global stage,' praising a diplomatic delegation led by Pakistan People's Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for what he called a 'victorious' international mission.
'You fought Pakistan's case with national spirit and returned victorious,' Sharif added, speaking at a dinner held in honour of the delegation, which had recently concluded diplomatic visits to the US, the UK, and Europe.
The delegation, which included senior political figures such as Sherry Rehman, Hina Rabbani Khar, Dr Musadik Malik, and Jalil Abbas Jilani, was tasked with countering what officials described as 'recent Indian propaganda' and presenting Pakistan's position on key regional issues.
Sharif credited the delegation for effectively highlighting matters ranging from Kashmir's Pahalgam incident to the Indus Waters Treaty, saying their efforts had drawn international recognition. 'Bilawal articulated Pakistan's position in an excellent manner,' he said.
The prime minister also attributed Pakistan's strategic posture to 'the blessings of Allah, the prayers of the nation, and the military expertise of our armed forces,' claiming India had to 'pay a heavy price for its unjustified war hysteria.'
Referring to domestic affairs, Sharif said the government had aimed to provide relief across all sectors in the newly announced 2025-26 federal budget, including salaried individuals. He thanked coalition partners, including the PPP, for their support in the budget process.
'I am hopeful that with your guidance, cooperation, and suggestions, we will overcome internal and external challenges successfully, insha'Allah!' he added.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, and other cabinet members and advisers also attended the dinner.

PM pledges tax cuts on farm inputs, boost to agritech

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday pledged to reduce taxes on agricultural inputs and promote investment in agritech, as part of the government's efforts to revive Pakistan's struggling agriculture sector. 'Agriculture is the backbone of the country, and sustainable reforms in the agriculture sector will further boost the economy,' PM Shehbaz said, while chairing a review meeting. According to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the prime minister said that reforms in the agriculture sector will significantly increase production per acre, which will further reduce production costs. 'Taxes on agricultural machinery and equipment should be gradually reduced to promote farm mechanisation,' he said. Moreover, steps should be taken to increase the storage capacity of agricultural commodities. The premier urged provinces to come up with new projects and funds for the development of the agriculture sector. He said that the government has not imposed taxes on fertilisers and agricultural chemicals in the upcoming budget for the development of agriculture. PM was hopeful that people sent to China on agricultural scholarships would render valuable services as entrepreneurs for the development of Pakistan's agriculture sector. During the meeting, the prime minister was presented with proposals regarding reforms in the agricultural sector, especially in terms of increasing agricultural production, agricultural infrastructure and easy access to agricultural credit for farmers. The attendees were briefed that the National Agriculture Innovation and Growth Action Plan focuses on increasing farmers' income, increasing production and reforms in the right direction. By adding value to the agricultural sector, farmers' income will be increased from exports and valuable foreign exchange will be earned, it was said. The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain, Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr Musaddiq Masood Malik, Prime Minister's Chief Coordinator for Agriculture Musharraf Zaidi, Prime Minister's Chief Coordinator for Agriculture Ahmed Umair, private sector entrepreneurs associated with the agricultural sector and senior government officials.

India's 5-year bond yield leads rise on RBI's cash withdrawal plan

MUMBAI: Indian government bond yields rose in early deals on Wednesday, led by an uptick in the five-year yield, as traders reacted to the central bank's plan to withdraw excess liquidity by holding a variable reverse repo auction. The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond was at 6.2626% as of 10:20 a.m. IST, compared with Tuesday's close of 6.2504%. The five-year 6.75% 2029 bond yield was at 6.0213%, up from the previous close of 5.9870%. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said after market hours on Tuesday that it will conduct a seven-day variable reverse repo rate auction worth one trillion rupees ($11.64 billion) on Friday. Earlier this month, Reuters reported that the RBI could start conducting these VRRR auctions to withdraw surplus liquidity as and when required. 'There will be more selling in the short-term papers,' a trader with a private bank said. 'If liquidity is sucked out, focus will shift from the short-end to long-end.' India's banking system liquidity surplus has remained elevated throughout June despite tax outflows and has averaged 2.76 trillion rupees per day this month, comfortably above 1% of bank deposits. India bonds end off lows as oil gives up most gains The longer-dated bonds are likely to find support from lower US Treasury peers. The 10-year US bond yield was at 4.30%, after hitting a seven-week low of 4.2850% on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Iran and Israel seem to be holding up a fragile ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump, which is providing some comfort to the market.

The Israel-Iran ceasefire: will it hold?

'I very much welcome President Trump's announcement of a cease-fire between Israel and Iran. I urge the two countries to respect it fully. The fighting must stop. The people of the two countries have already suffered too much. It is my sincere hope that this ceasefire can be replicated in the other conflicts in the region.' These are the remarks of United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Although the institution that Guterres represents has done only little or nothing to help defuse the war, his perspective on the situation underscores the need for forging a global consensus on the greater need for peace in every nook and corner of the world. But how ironic it is that after agreeing to ceasefire with Iran, Israel has decided to step up attacks on the besieged Gazans. President Trump, in my view, is required to ask Tel Aviv to cease hostilities and belligerence against the Palestinians without any further loss of time in order to give legitimacy to the ceasefire that he has successfully brokered between Iran and its ally, Israel.
