Maijol retains Sabah Badminton Association presidency

Kota Kinabalu: Datuk Maijol Mahap retained his post as Sabah Badminton Association (SBA) president for the 2025-2029 term at its 70th annual general meeting (AGM) held at a hotel here, recently. He received overwhelming support from the delegates with 33 votes while his challenger Keplie Limun only managed five votes. He said he was very honoured to receive the mandate given by all the delegates present. 'I am truly appreciative of the trust placed in me to continue to lead SBA. I would like to thank all the delegates from the 19 districts for coming and completing our agenda. 'I would like to express my commitment to strengthen the development of badminton at the grassroots level as well as enhance the achievements of Sabah badminton players at the national and international levels,' he said. He added that election is an important process in ensuring that the SBA leadership continues to be accepted and functions legally according to the association's constitution. 'Thank you again for the trust and confidence given to me to lead the SBA for the next four years. We will do our best for the sport of badminton in Sabah,' added Maijol. The other elected members in the new committee are deputy president Suriansa A. Kadir, vice presidents John Baru, Sudirman Abas, Sanif Alfia and Ag Damit A.Bakar, while the supreme council members are Roger Langgau, Dr Joinis Longkiad, Khoo Chui Eng, Abd Husin Sairi, Sumitah Hassan and Jimin Tibin. In the appointed positions, Anthony Liaw was named vice president, Rechine Jikah as honorary secretary assisted by Samsuddin Abu Bakar Gait, while the honorary treasurer is Felix Francis Ganang with Steve Koh as the assistant. The appointed supreme council members are Ag. Ku Mohd Yazri, Ag. Ku Mohd Yahaya, Androw Celyron Sindeh, Lily Lidond and Dr Ovelyn Matanluk. For the record, Maijol only returned to lead the State body in May last year after a lapse of 11 years. He was the president from 2006 to 2013 and during that period, SBA with him as the executive chairman organised the historic World Super Series Master Final at Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex in 2008, and several State players were also drafted into the national squad at that time. SBA under him was awarded the best state sports association in 2008, and he was presented the best sports leader award for three consecutive years from 2008 to 2010 as well. UN tackles beleaguered two-state solution for Israel, Palestinians
Palestine is now recognised by at least 142 UN member states out of 193, with France among them. (EPA Images pic) UNITED NATIONS : France and Saudi Arabia will lead the charge starting Monday to revive the moribund push for a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians at a UN conference in New York. Days before the July 28-30 conference, to be co-chaired by Riyadh and Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he would formally recognise the State of Palestine in September. Paris's decision 'will breathe new life into a conference that seemed destined to irrelevance,' said Richard Gowan, an analyst at the International Crisis Group. 'Macron's announcement changes the game. Other participants will be scrabbling to decide if they should also declare an intent to recognise Palestine.' In an interview with French weekly La Tribune Dimanche, French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot said that other European countries will confirm 'their intention to recognise the State of Palestine' during the conference, without detailing which ones. France is hoping that Britain will take this step, and more than 200 British MPs on Friday pushed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to do so, but he reiterated that recognition of a Palestinian state 'must be part of a wider plan'. According to an AFP database, at least 142 of the 193 UN member states – including France – now recognise the Palestinian state proclaimed by the Palestinian leadership in exile in 1988. In 1947, a resolution of the UN General Assembly decided on the partition of Palestine, then under a British mandate, into two independent states – one Jewish and the other Arab. The following year, the state of Israel was proclaimed. For several decades, the vast majority of UN member states have supported the idea of a two-state solution, Israelis and Palestinians living side by side peacefully and securely. But after more than 21 months of war in Gaza, the ongoing expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and Israeli officials declaring designs to annex occupied territory, it is feared a Palestinian state could be geographically impossible. The war in Gaza started following a deadly attack by Hamas on Israel, which responded with a large-scale military response that has claimed tens of thousands of Palestinian lives. The conference is a response to the crisis, with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa and several dozen ministers from around the world expected to attend. It is coming at a moment when 'the prospect of a Palestinian state has never been so threatened or so necessary,' Barrot said. Call for courage Beyond facilitating conditions for the recognition of a Palestinian state, the meeting will have three other focuses – reform of the Palestinian Authority, disarmament of Hamas and its exclusion from Palestinian public life, and normalisation of relations with Israel by Arab states that have not yet done so. No new normalisation deals are expected to be announced at the meeting, according to a French diplomatic source. But 'for the first time, Arab countries will condemn Hamas and call for its disarmament,' Barrot said. The conference 'offers a unique opportunity to transform international law and the international consensus into an achievable plan and to demonstrate resolve to end the occupation and conflict once and for all, for the benefit of all peoples,' said Palestinian ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour, calling for 'courage' from participants. Israel and the US will not take part in the meeting, while international pressure continues to mount on Israel to end nearly two years of war in Gaza. Despite 'tactical pauses' in some military operations announced by Israel, the humanitarian catastrophe in the ravaged coastal territory is expected to dominate speeches by representatives of more than 100 countries as they take the podium from Monday to Wednesday. Gowan said he expected 'very fierce criticism of Israel'.

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC brushed aside DPMM FC from Brunei 3-1 in their latest pre-season friendly at Likas Stadium on Saturday. They took a 2-0 lead at half time against this season's Super League newcomers with goals from Daniel Ting in the 11th minute and Miguel Angel Garrido Cifuentes in the 31st minute. Daniel added his second in the 71st minute before the visitors reduced the deficit late in the match. It was also the third pre-season match for Sabah FC following the 2-8 thrashing by Thailand top club Buriram United in the Asean Charity Shield match held two weeks ago in Thailand preceded by the 4-0 win over another Brunei club side Kasuka FC a week earlier at Likas Stadium. Coach Alto Linus was happy with the progress of the players following the big win. 'It was a good result from the team, but there are still several aspects of our game that need to be improved before the start of the new league season. 'I am satisfied with the overall performance of all the players, including the substitutes who came in the second half. 'This friendly was to strengthen the team's match fitness before the league begins in early August and I want to see the players are fully prepared and able to maintain their consistency to get positive results in every match,' he said. Sabah women emerge runners-up

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah women deaf futsal team came in second after losing 1-9 to Penang in the final of the 5th Malaysian Deaf Futsal Championship held at the RKS Sports Centre in Petaling Jaya on July 25. They had earlier booked their place in the final with wins over Negeri Sembilan (3-1), Perak (3-1) and Melaka (2-0). Sabah Deaf Sports Association President Spencer Soo Kok Heng was delighted with the team's achievement in their maiden appearance in the National Championship. 'It was the first time we joined the competition and seven players were unable to make the trip because of fund issues. 'Despite only being able to feature eight players from the 15 allowed, finishing second was still a very good result. 'Furthermore, we need to take part in this tournament otherwise we can't qualify for Sopma (Malaysian Deaf Sports Games) XXII 2025 to be held in Sarawak this October,' he said.
