Carmel's Alex Couto will play Division I basketball for staff with plenty of Indiana ties
The Carmel High School senior guard committed Oral Roberts on Friday during a visit to campus. Couto, a point guard, had been committed to Huntington University until coach Kory Alford left to become the associate head coach at Oral Roberts.
'Oral Roberts stood out to me in many ways, but the main reason was the culture they are wanting to build, and they are a very faith-based program,' Couto said. 'Also, the coaching staff. They are two feet bought in with everything that they do, and I couldn't be more happy with this decision to continue this next chapter in my life.'
Kory Barnett was hired as the Oral Roberts coach in late March. Barnett had served on Indiana coach Darian DeVries' staff at West Virginia last season and previously spent five years at Nevada and six at UCLA on Steve Alford's staff. Barnett is a Rochester, Ind., native who played at IU from 2009-12.
Couto was one of the state's top guards as a senior but injured his knee — a sprain of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) and bone bruise — and missed the final six weeks of the season. In Carmel's first 11 games, he played all but five minutes, averaging 12.6 points, 4.0 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals, shooting 43.1% (25-for-58) from the 3-point line.
'I've never coached a kid that played with so much joy, passion and love for the game,' Carmel coach Ryan Osborn said. 'His presence alone lifts everyone up.'
Oral Roberts struggled to a 7-23 record last season. The Golden Eagles made a run to the Sweet 16 in 2021 as a No. 15 seed, defeating Ohio State and Florida before losing to Arkansas by two points at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. ORU made the NCAA tournament again in 2023, finishing with a 30-5 record. Coach Paul Mills left after that season for Wichita State.

Notre Dame's Niele Ivey tweaks coaching staff, promotes Carlos Knox to assistant coach
Coming off her fourth consecutive Sweet 16 appearance, Notre Dame women's head basketball coach Niele Ivey made a tweak to her coaching staff ahead of the 2025-26 season. After two successful years as director of player personnel for the program, Carlos Knox has been promoted to assistant coach ahead of his third season in South Bend. Knox has been praised for helping develop many of ND's student-athletes, including 2025 WNBA Draft picks Liatu King and Maddy Westbeld. Last season, King broke the Notre Dame single-season record for rebounds per game (10.4) and was named to the all-ACC second team. The previous year, Westbeld was one of four players in the ACC to average at least 14.0 points and 8.0 rebounds. Before his time in South Bend, Knox worked almost a decade with the Indiana Fever in multiple roles and helped lead the team to eight consecutive WNBA playoff appearances, including the 2012 WNBA championship. Knox was a two-time NCAA scoring champion, NCAA All-American and NCAA Player of the Year for IUPUI. After college, he played for the Indiana Pacers from 1998-99 and played overseas in Croatia, Germany, Venezuela and Italy. He has also been a head coach in the International Basketball League, Continental Basketball Association and American Basketball Association. Kai Havertz injury — Arsenal lose German for undisclosed period, seek forward in transfer market
Arsenal is back into the transfer market for forward help after versatile German striker Kai Havertz suffered a knee injury, according to David Ornstein. The injury to Havertz, 26, leaves the Gunners with just one healthy center forward — new signing Viktor Gyokeres — as Gabriel Jesus has yet to return from last season's ACL injury. Havertz did not train on Wednesday and Ornstein said there's no set duration for the player's absence. Failing to account for Havertz's midseason injury last season is seen by many as a big reason for their stumble in the Premier League title race. Havertz scored nine times with three assists in 23 appearances last season and made 30 starts in each of his the previous two Premier League seasons. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had planned to use Havertz as a second striker but has also deployed the valuable German in the midfield and as a winger. Kai Havertz injury — Who could the Gunners sign in transfer market? The length of absence will dictate the investment required to deputize for Havertz, of course, and a lot of center forwards have already moved in the market. Could Yoane Wissa be an option? Brentford are asking $80 million for the 28-year-old scorer, and Wissa is has been sitting out from Bees camp as Newcastle have not raised their bid from $54 million. The Gunners have made moves with Chelsea in the past, and the Blues are reportedly looking to offload Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku, while Manchester United hope to sell Rasmus Hojlund. But would Arsenal be desperate enough to help their Big Six rivals out of jams? As for further long shots, Ollie Watkins is known as a long-time Arsenal fan, but would surely be looking for a more crucial role in an attack than Gyokeres' No. 2. Adding Alexander Isak would be bonkers given the outlay for Gyokeres as a clear No. 1 striker, but we suppose there's a non-zero chance the Gunners could approach Newcastle. More to come...

Ousmane Touré set to miss entire season for Lille
Lille OSC have confirmed that Ousmane Touré (20) suffered a serious injury during the 3-3 draw with Stade Brestois on Sunday afternoon. The defender filling in at right-back due to injuries and illness to Aïssa Mandi, Tiago Santos, and Thomas Meunier had to come off midway through the second half. Lille have since revealed that the defender ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will require surgery to solve the problem. Lille explained that 'he will face a long period of unavailability' as these injuries require a lengthy rehabilitation period, while La Voix du Nord reports that he could miss the rest of the season. This could mean that Bruno Génésio will turn to the teenager Maxima Goffi (17) as he did on Sunday, although Santos should soon be back in action after the Portuguese youth international's return from a lengthy spell on the sidelines following an ACL injury was temporarily delayed by a sore throat.
