Coimbatore farmers Say Foresters Are Refusing To Cull Wild Boars

Time of India25-07-2025
Coimbatore: A farmer, P V Udayakumar, of Papanickenpalayam near Thudiyalur on the outskirts of the city, depends on banana cultivation to fend a family of five. While he recently cultivated 4,500 banana plants on his four acres of farmland, he has already lost 800 of them to the raids by wild boars in the past six months.
With wild boar raids becoming the order of the day, Udayakumar says he is robbed of his livelihood.
"Wild boars enter our fields in a pack of 50 or so. Their population has drastically increased. I am facing losses daily owing to the wild boar raids. If this situation persists, I am sure to lose all my banana plants to the wild boars," says Udayakumar.
While forest officials had visited the field to assess the damage, he hasn't received any compensation from the department so far.
"They only suggest electric fencing for protection. When we ask about culling, they have no answers," says Udayakumar.
V R Ramakrishnan, of Narasipuram in Thondamuthur block, is another farmer affected by wild boar raids. "It's the season to grow turmeric and shallot (small onion) in our area. Wild boars enter our fields and dig nearly a foot deep into the soil, destroying the crops. I have already incurred a loss of Rs50,000," he says.
According to Ramakrishnan, forest officers have been rejecting their demand for scheduled culling of wild boars, citing lack of trained personnel and proper firearms. "We wouldn't be making this demand had wild boars remained in the forests. The govt must treat this issue with urgency and act on a war footing. Otherwise, farmers wouldn't survive."
In Kerala, he says, farmers are permitted to cull wild boars with prior approval.
"If the forest department here lacks manpower or firearms, farmers should be allowed to cull wild boars with govt permission."
G Ranganathan, state executive committee member, Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam, says the farm workers are afraid to work near waterways and dense vegetation because of frequent wild boar sightings and attacks. "These animals are fast, aggressive and unpredictable. Many people have been injured."
He urged the local bodies to clear the bushes in and around waterways, where wild boars tend to hide.
When contacted, district forest officer N Jayaraj said special teams were formed in each village panchayat and revenue administration unit as per the govt order to mitigate wild boar menace. "These teams are tasked with driving away, capturing or culling wild boars in accordance with the govt order."
According to him, 12 wild boars were captured and another two were culled in the Coimbatore forest division in the past two months.
"We currently have three large cages, seven nets and seven smaller cages for capturing the animals. More than 100 weapons are also available for culling."
He says the poor solid waste management is contributing to the rise in wild boar numbers. "These animals thrive on food and vegetable waste dumped along the borders and hide among bushes near the water bodies. Local bodies have been advised to manage waste more effectively to address the wild boar menace."

Water crisis in east Pune deepens; PMC declares fresh cut tomorrow

Pune: Despite the city receiving significant rainfall and reservoirs brimming, the water shortage in east Pune has worsened, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) announcing yet another cut on Thursday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A few days ago, several eastern parts saw a supply disruption. Now, a fresh shutdown has been declared for Thursday, due to maintenance at the Bund Garden water treatment plant. Water supply will remain cut off for the day, and on Friday, residents will get low-pressure supply. The affected areas include Yerwada, Sangamwadi, Tingrenagar, Vidyanagar, Vadgaonsheri, Kharadi, Chandan Nagar, Somnath Nagar, Viman Nagar, Lohegaon, Vishrantwadi, Nagpur Chawl, Yerwada Jail Quarters, Press Colony, Kalyani Nagar, Dhanori, Kalwad, Phulenagar, SAPRAS, Shantinagar, Pratiknagar, and Kasturba Vasahat. Residents, however, said the problem goes deeper than just repair work. They alleged the crisis is being fuelled by the tanker lobby and possibly by an artificially created shortage. "Two new tanks have come up near the airport and since Aug the supply schedule has been recalibrated. The pressure has dropped, timings have been reduced, and that has created major issues for societies like ours," said Anagha Dhara, secretary of Lunkad Valencia society in Vimannagar. She said that larger societies have been forced to depend heavily on tankers. "Earlier, we used to get four hours of supply. Now it has dropped to nearly half, sometimes only 40% of what we got earlier. In our small society, we still manage with one or two tankers a day — but big complexes are forced to order up to 20 tankers a day. Tanker water itself is of poor quality and makes people sick, borewells are polluted, and PMC tankers don't come when asked," Dhara said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Even parts of Wadgaon Sheri and Kharadi have not been spared. A Wadgaon Sheri resident, who did not wish to be named, said, "Our society is at the tail-end of the main line, so we get the worst supply. As against 3-4 hours of water earlier, we now get barely half an hour to an hour daily. And instead of evenings, supply comes late at night with low pressure. PMC had promised us tankers, but now those are diverted elsewhere; so we have to pay Rs2,000 per tanker privately. " Deepak Patil, chairman, Kharadi Housing Societies Welfare Association said they have collected data of around 33 housing societies in Kharadi which are collectively spending over Rs84 lakh per month on utility water provided by tankers and over Rs28 lakh on drinking water. "We recently approached PMC to bring to their attention the ongoing and long-standing water supply issues in the Kharadi area. Many societies have been facing inadequate or irregular PMC water supply, forcing residents to depend on private water tankers for their daily needs. Despite repeated requests and follow-ups, there has been no significant or permanent solution to this issue," Patil said. Prashant Kadam, member of a local residents' group in Wadgaon Sheri, said, "Every now and then this issue occurs and several societies are complaining about water supply issues. PMC officials keep claiming they are trying to fix this issue but they never really do. Supplies have been restricted, with last few days being worse." A PMC water supply department official admitted the supply was still restricted but said the situation would improve soon. "The inlet valves of the Viman Nagar tanks are being refurbished, and similar work has been completed in Dhanori, Vishrantwadi and Lohgaon. Thursday's shutdown will also help us plug leakages across the network. Supply should normalise in the coming days," the official said.

Toiling dawn to dusk, Silent Heroes Cleaned Vande Bharat Platforms

Nagpur: As the spotlight shone on the Nagpur-Pune Vande Bharat inaugural run at Nagpur station on Sunday, it was the unsung heroes working behind the scenes who truly made the platforms sparkle. Platforms 8 and 9 stood out, gleaming under the bright lights, thanks to the tireless efforts of a dedicated group of sanitation workers. For the past week, these individuals have been toiling from the crack of dawn, ensuring every inch was spotless for the high-profile occasion. Among these diligent workers were Shital Ragde, Akshay Lokhande, Nikhil Dharme, Mamta Mor, Pragati Namre, Anjali Sonksure, and Sagar Bavne. Their tasks ranged from sweeping and scrubbing to polishing, with some even managing the upkeep of eight train coaches single-handedly. Pragati Namre, one of the workers, expressed her pride, saying, "It makes me proud that because of us, people could enjoy their train travel. Everything begins with cleanliness." Her colleague, Akshay Lokhande, echoed her sentiments, adding, "Events like this happen rarely, and when they do, we feel we are part of something important. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo People see the train, but few see the ones who make the surroundings shine." For many of these workers, Sunday was a rare occasion when they received breakfast and medical facilities. "We have been working here for 15 years but still get only Rs15,000 instead of Rs20,000. Usually, there's no breakfast, no medical help, nothing extra," shared Mamta Mor, who has been on the job since her teens. Despite the long hours and modest pay, the excitement of witnessing the Vande Bharat train up close was palpable. "The train was beautiful. It felt good knowing we played a small role in such a big day," said Sagar Bavne. As the ceremony concluded and the crowds dispersed, the sanitation workers quietly resumed their duties, brooms in hand, preparing the station for the next arrival. For this silent crew, the pride in their work lingers long after the applause fades, their contributions shining brightly in the background of the day's events.
